Religion is only one of many excuses that people adopt to justify killing each other. Helps if there's a bloodthirsty deity, but not necessary. See Buddhists killing Muslims in Burma.

For some people appeasing a god is the best way to fully release all your pent-up tribalistic hatred.  It may be a bit like looking at porn and masturbating (or so I've been told).
