If you put lots of stuff in there, the spinach disappearing isn't so much an issue. I use bacon. YMMV

I blame those pesky vegetarian house elves, always stealing socks to stuff with spinach leaves just before disappearing into an alternate dimension.

It's explained in "Lord Demon" by Zelazny and Lindskold. The socks and hangers go to their own planes of existence.

As far as the spinach and bacon, the difference is that spinach is mostly water.

So is the spinach, but the fat and protein do a better job of holding the water. Also less water in the bacon.

That top one. It looks like it bites. Yep. Totally bites. Good thing they evolved, yes? 

My alternate theory though, there was once an spotted horse with a really short, fat neck and legs, what went for a drink in a river. A croc grabbed its head and pulled, but its legs got stuck in the terrain aaand... They stretched while growing thinner. Then, giraffe. And that, boys and girls, is how evolution works.
