Title: Loch Ness Monster seen as real dinosaur in biology books taught in Louisiana

Oh my gosh, you guys! The Loch Ness Monster is rea- wait, never mind.

Is there no end to this type of stupidity in the south? I currently live in Mississippi and we are the most religious state AND the dumbest. Hand in hand. But this, teaching The Loch Ness Monster to disprove evolution, is just pushing it.

Anyone else have some other religion in school based comparisons that are equally or more baffling?

This is almost beyond belief.  There are more nutters per square yard in the American bible belt than in Broadmoor prison.

Thanks for posting that, Java - I need a good laugh in the morning.

They need to be teaching about The Asmo to prove the existence of devils and demons, methink. Time to write a letter to someone, yes?  :D

This Loch Ness Monster - do you suppose it might be some Asmo-like creature escaped from the fiords?

All you need to do is claim that you don't evolve, and I'm pretty sure you'd be in.

I'm not necessarily crazy about it, but it seems it may just be 'normal' math but with bible activities through which to learn.

The one's I've seen online are for kids from about preschool aged to maybe 7 or 8 yrs of age.  I'm sure there's A LOT of modern theories being left out at those ages.

Did you guys know that if god wasn't busy holding it together up there, 1+1 might not = 2.  What is, at it's essence, counting, apparently works because god created it and keeps it faithful.  I can't figure out what would happen if god wasn't holding it together for us.  1+1 could = 3. but does that mean that we just use the word 3 to convey the concept of 2, or does it mean that an extra thing popped up as a function of being added, but even if that were the case, wouldn't we just add another 1 anyway and call it 3?   ???

QuoteLoch Ness Monster seen as real dinosaur in biology books taught in Louisiana school

The startling claim about Nessie's authenticity is reportedly made to bolster creationism within the textbook. The Loch Ness Monster is described as a type of dinosaur, and if dinosaurs and man co-exist, then presumably there would be holes in the scientific argument for evolution.

The Scottish legend of the Loch Ness Monster is suggested as truth in a biology book that a private Christian school in Louisiana is using in its curriculum.

But that's only part of the outrage from critics: Students who are eligible for taxpayer-funded vouchers will be allowed to attend Eternity Christian Academy in Westlake for the 2012-13 school year, according to reports.

The startling claim about Nessie's authenticity is made to bolster creationism within the textbook, the Scotsman newspaper reported Monday. The Loch Ness Monster is described as a type of dinosaur, and if dinosaurs and man co-exist, then presumably there would be holes in the scientific argument for evolution.

The textbook, produced by Accelerated Christian Education, features a passage about the Loch Ness Monster in the Biology 1099 edition, Scotland's The Herald reported.

"Are dinosaurs alive today? Scientists are becoming more convinced of their existence," the textbook reads, according to the newspaper.

Read the rest at the link, if you'd like to - it goes on for a bit.

My theory was this:

If God has 200 fish and there are 200 starving children, but 20 footballers pray for fish, how many fish are left over if God gives each foot ball player 10 fish?

And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

Noah took in clean beasts by sevens and unclean beasts by twos.
x= unclean beasts
y = clean beasts

2x + 7y = 22,000,000,000

Solve for x and y.

Bonus question: If each animal produced 0.5 kg of fecal matter daily, and Noah et al could spend 4 hours a day shoveling at 20kg/hr, how long would it take for the massive volume of shit to exceed the maximum capacity of the Ark? Students may cross-reference with Genesis.

1.

x=(22E9-7y)/2
y=(22E9-2x)/7

x and y are free variables. Recommend starting with y with regard to whole numbers. (Every even is cleanly divisible by two, but only every seventh is cleanly divisible by seven)

2. The rate of 20 kg/h is pathetic, even for an ancient old fart with a beard.

Ok, so this now reflects that 8 people are working. However, Noah and his wife are over 600 hundred years old, so . . . come on, the dude's not going to be a power pooper scooper.

How volatile is the clean/unclean attribute?
Can unclean animal make a clean animal become unclean?
If so with all them uncleans on the boat if they aren't carefully segregated, before long all the animals will be unclean, including the humans.

It will be a very, very, very stinky boat ride.

An interesting point that Kevin Krady made in one of his posts on WhyWontGodHealAmputees, was with regards to the environment that Noah was in when he build his boat and gathered the animals.
People were so savage, so evil that god had no option but to kill them all.
But given this environment, Noah roamed around, gathering materials for his jolly big boat, he travelled the world and collected animals and all this took him many years (was it a 100 or so?). Nobody tried to stop him, nobody stole his animals or his boat or his material, nobody vandalised his boat, nobody troubled him? Apparently businesses were still able to operate, to produce the wood and nails and material Noah needed for his boat.

The thing I don't get about creationists is . . . they scrounge for this meager, speculative, pinhead of logic, float it in a vat of irrational deductive reasoning, and call it 'evidence', when testable statements are provided in the bible. Apparently the 'sons of God' came down to earth and procreated with humans, so God had to send the flood and cull their gigantic offspring. I want to see some giant angel DNA, dammit. I bet it thparkles.

Chef's dad:
Say, would you crackers like to hear about the time we saw the Loch Ness monster?

Stan:
No, that's okay

Chef's dad:
Ooh! It must've been about seven, eight years ago. Me and the little lady was out on this boat you see, all alone at night, when all of a sudden this huge creature, this giant crustacean from the paleolithic era, comes out of the water

Chef's mom:
We was so scared, Lord have mercy, I jumped up in the boat and I said "Thomas, what on earth is that creature?!"

Chef's dad:
It stood above us looking down with these big red eyes...

Chef's mom:
Oh it was so scary!

Chef's dad:
And I yelled, I said "What do you want from us monster?!" And the monster bent down and said "I need about treefiddy"

[silence]

Kyle:
What's treefiddy?

Chef's dad:
Three dollars and fifty cents

Chef's mom:
Treefiddy

Stan:
He wanted money?

Chef's dad:
That's right. I said "I ain't giving you no treefiddy you goddam Loch Ness monster! Get your own goddam money!"

Chef's mom:
I gave him a dollar

Chef's dad:
She gave him a dollar

Chef's mom:
I thought he'd go away if I gave him a dollar

Chef's dad:
Well of course he's not gonna go away! You gave him a dollar, he's gonna assume you got more

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

The thing I don't get about creationists is . . . they scrounge for this meager, speculative, pinhead of logic, float it in a vat of irrational deductive reasoning, and call it 'evidence', when testable statements are provided in the bible. Apparently the 'sons of God' came down to earth and procreated with humans, so God had to send the flood and cull their gigantic offspring. I want to see some giant angel DNA, dammit. I bet it thparkles.

I love the logic of angel + human = GIANT ANGEL CYCLOPS EVANGELION

I don't GET it. XD

There was logic in that equation?   ;D

Genesis 6:1-6
And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

It also occurs to me that this passage subverts the idea of Yahweh being infallible and omniscient.

From personal experience, I happen to know that the tea always goes over well, but no matter how many times I've shown my grandparents how to use their remote control, they never quite remember. "Come over and fix our TV, it's broken again!" "Why, what's the matter with it?" "There's a black box in the middle of the screen!" "You accidentally turned closed caption on again, grandma." "What button's that?? How'd I do that??" "Be right over...."

... and this conversation happened after them doing this for about the 10th time in a couple months...  :D

So, I just make her tea, "fix her TV", and rinse, lather and repeat.  ;D

LOL

Reminds me of when my parents asked me to explain  - over the phone -  to their elderly friends how to operate their first computer. Apparently I fail at describing what symbol is on the 'power' button.

What exactly is the right way to explain what a power symbol is?

When i was 13, i volunteered to teach adults how to use computers!
Yes, 13. I was seriously showing grown ups that you don't PUT the mouse on the monitor to move the cursor. Oy x__x;;;

Referring to a 'mouse' is very confusing to old people.  They might try to use a real mouse, and get bitten.  We should call the computer version an 'Asmo'. ;)

Yes but then which way around would he face in your hand? If he faced towards your wrist the scroll wheel would be in his butt crack and you'd be click 'left buttock' or 'right buttock'. If he faced the other way you'd be continually poking him in the eyes and using his lips as the scroll device; which means he'd probably bite you. Thus I don't think Asmo would make a suitable mouse replacement.

*just considered orienting Asmo on his back and decided not to describe the inverted reversed control set up!*

Hmmm, I'm working on a couple of user guides right now. I wonder if I could work this in there...

Funny how we take these things for granted, it seems so obvious to me how to use a mouse, if teaching another people the first thing I'd assume is that they also knew how to use it properly.

This one guy mentioned something that I think is very true, computers are one of the many things that younger generations know more about than older generations. It seems odd to some and the reverse of the natural order of things. I was already older than the age that people are exposed to PC these days when my father got his first PC -  I was around 10 or 11 - but he didn't let anyone really use it. People of my age are like the first or last of a "transitional species" :P

I just want everyone to know that the Loch Ness Monster really does exist, for what it's worth.  I have a Polaris pool cleaner in my swimming pool, and we have named her "Nessie."  She travels around the pool sucking up dirt and bugs, has a long tail, and terrifies my grandchildren.  They demand that I take Nessie out of the pool before they go swimming.

:D Cute! And I don't blame them at all. My kiddo isn't fond of pool cleaners, either. She has reasonably long hair for her age, and loves wearing frilly bathing suits, so she's always worried that the pool cleaner will detach itself from the bottom of the pool and hunt her down and in her words "suck me up and eat me for dinner!"

This would explain a lot. No wonder that the other pool cleaners feel the need to terrorize other kids. Its the low self esteem.

Could be, but this isn't necessarily the case. Some pool cleaners found a good ally in me when it came to terrorising other kids. ;)
