Title: 200,000 dead.
Post by: Tank on September 24, 2020, 12:21:19 PM
The US has just passed an unfortunate headstone with 200,000 names on it. And that's just the names we know.  :'(

Entitlement and ignorance produce disastrous results. America is ripe with both. The mindless orange dictator encourages this disgraceful and embarrassing behavior.

It's a sad and disgusting situation. That number is expected to be close to double by January, from what I'm seeing.  :(

That's only one count. The CDC count (https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#cases_casesinlast7days) is 201,411 at the moment, while Worldometer (https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/) has 207,203. Both are very likely to be undercounts.

A lot of people aren't going to the hospital when they have life-threatening conditions like heart trouble, simply because they're afraid of getting Covid. People are dying because they won't go to the hospital, I'd count them with the people actually dying from the disease. One of my neighbors (supports the chump, of course) says that the death toll is exaggerated because Covid is put on the death certificate if the decedent had it, even if they had previous confounding conditions. I asked, if they hadn't gotten Covid, they'd still be alive, right? I also wonder if he got that info from Breitbart or Alex Jones. It certainly smacks of a conspiracy theory.

According to an analysis done by the failing New York Times, there are currently approximately 266,000 more deaths in the US than there were at this point in "a normal year." Some of those would be directly or proximately due to the bug, and others no doubt due to people ignoring symptoms of other ailments because they didn't want to go to a hospital.

I'll link to the story, even though the Times throws up a paywall if you view more than a few of their articles in a month.

"The Toll Since Coronavirus Struck: 266,000 More Deaths Than Normal" | The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/05/05/us/coronavirus-death-toll-us.html)

QuoteThe official coronavirus death toll has passed 200,000, but an accounting of all lives that were lost in the United States since mid-March shows that the pandemic and its resulting disruption have caused substantially more deaths: at least 266,000 more people have died than would in a normal year, according to a New York Times analysis of estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Our analysis examines deaths from all causes — not just confirmed cases of coronavirus — beginning when the virus took hold. That allows comparisons that don't depend on the availability of coronavirus tests in a given place or on the accuracy of cause-of-death reporting. What it shows is that some places have seen staggering death tolls, while nearly every state has seen death counts that are substantially higher than usual. The only states where death patterns look normal are Alaska and Hawaii.

I think most people who support chump simply listen to the rhetoric spouted by the before mentioned characters and others. I know two that do and they are close to me.

I'm not in any condition to debate anymore. Speaking is difficult for me and sometimes people cannot understand me. They'll usually walk away with "You have your opinion and I'll have mine." It's a cop out.

It's a sad and disgusting situation. That number is expected to be close to double by January, from what I'm seeing.  :(

I remember reading at the start of all this that total CV19 deaths were expected to reach between 1 and 2 million if strong preventive measures weren't taken.  I expect it'll top that even if Biden takes over in Jan '21.  Even if he steps up with a good Federal plan coordinating efforts among the States, there's no making individuals cooperate and that's where our biggest weakness is.

If Biden manages to make it to the presidency, he's inheriting a shambles. This country is getting more divided and moribund as I watch. Back in '16 I looked into emigrating to New Zealand. Since I wouldn't be a contributing member of society (I have plenty of skills, but was 62 at the time, and had no interest in being a contributing part of the economy), it would cost my wife and I a megabuck each to do so. I can understand the reasons for that, but I don't have 2 megabucks to spare, sad to say. By the same token, my wife knows a gal who married an expat New Zealander and they relocated to NZ when the younger of that couple retired. In spite of claims about the national health service being "free", there may be substantial delays in those services, and her friend flies back to the US for many medical reasons, mainly age-related, which would be another factor to consider for us. There doesn't seem to be a place where the actions of one megalomaniacal shithead doesn't touch. There is a lot wrong with that picture, and when I reflect on that, I'm kind of pleased that the US is taking a hit on it's prestige. So much influence, with what is now very little substance. It's a horrible shame for the US, but it's looking like we've earned it.  :(

And the trouble Biden will have is that the redneck republicans will make it a badge of honour to do the exact opposite of what he suggests they should.

Because being a petty twat waffle, is far more important than safeguarding the well being of the people you've sworn to protect.

This is a sad state of affairs. To put it in perspective that would mean an entire town of people would be dead.

How did our country get in this mess? Oh yes, poor leadership from the Cheeto in command.

Very sad that so many people have died. Brazil isn't far behind, with just over 140,000 dead. Such a sad state of affairs for all of us with incompetent "leaders" who do nothing but lead people to an early grave.

That's the thing.

You have one chance to initiate a collective think on people.
Once people's thinking is set, it is hard to change.

I think of Donald Trump as being two seperate people.
1. President Trump - leader of USA, leader of the government of USA.
2. Donald Trump - leader of the resistance of the government of USA.

The official corona virus response from the USA government (lead by President Trump) and the Coronavirus taskforce (Lead by Pence, who was appointed by President Trump) was that this was a dangerous pandemic and that people should social distance and wear masks.

Donald Trump (leader of the resistance) however, stated that he wouldn't be wearing a mask, that the corona virus was just a flu and that the pandemic was a Democratic hoax. Calling for Schools to open and for people in democratic run states to liberate themselves from social distancing constraints.

Trump's support base take the lead from Donald Trump (leader of the resistance) and pretty much ignore (but never criticise) President Trump.  Any criticism of President Trump is evidence of political games and lies by never Trumpers and radical socialist lefties.
Donald Trump supporters now are fixed on the belief that the coronavirus is no deadlier than the flu, only kills old people who have pre-existing conditions and would die anyway, that coronavirus deaths are grossly overstated and that vulnerable should protect themselves and others should have the right to go on with life as normal, as we tend to do every flu season.

IF Biden becomes president, there will still be Donald Trump (leader of the resistance) and there will still be Trump supporters who will continue to ignore the pandemic and proudly show people that they are expressing their freedoms as an "American".

The thing about a global pandemic is that in non authoritarian countries you need to get the population on board. You cannot as a prime minister or president, do it alone. The whole country needs to act together as a team to combat the pandemic. Donald Trump's downplaying of the pandemic early on (and on going) has had a huge impact in destroying USA's ability to beat this. And it will be very difficult for a president Biden to turn this around.

Working class Americans have been neglected by dishonest people who run elitist healthcare systems that benefit only upper class people. Only upper class people have money to get honest healthcare service in America to prevent mental and physical health illnesses properly. Meanwhile, working class Americans are getting sicker than older generations because of greedy people that profit from corruption. Sedentary jobs, corn, excessive meat intake, too much dairy consumption, alcohol, harmful drugs, abusive for-profit prisons, gluten, gluttony, smoking, psychologically traumatizing work, increasing wealth inequality, poverty, homelessness, and so forth have threatened working class Americans' health. Upper class people in America have better access to resources for protecting themselves amidst this pandemic. This is what happens in a fascist country that protects the ruling class first. It is why some Americans escaped America to seek refuge in countries that have enough wealth, social safety nets, honest healthcare workers, and less political corruption. Because working class Americans' health has been an afterthought for America's rulers. America's scientific and mathematical illiteracy due to increasing wealth inequality preventing higher education access does not help when protecting poor people from viruses, either. The ruling class from America are dumbing poor people down to keep them easily manipulated and impoverished. That is why you have a mob in America. A Trump-supporting mob for example. All of it is just a distraction, though. It is to let the ruling class keep people from lower classes distracted with low I.Q's, fear, hate, indoctrination, and division. It is what happens when America crumbles from within due to corrupt leaders disrespecting people from lower classes.

Fightsong has some valid points.  There are different things to address, however. The real deal is that the healthcare industry is a business. The old notion of having a doctor whose primary reason for existing is to provide health care for the local citizenry is a long-gone concept.

My local hospital is a very large and prestigious one.  They are one of the top-rated hospitals in Florida.  Alas they are also among the top- rated "churners" in Florida.   That means that their physicians route their patient's  onto a fast track that
refers them to other specialists or test facilities that are not needed.

The very large medical clinic, not a branch of the hospital. with whom I am attached, has a not so pleasing reputation for excessive "churning".  I have confidence in the judgement and competence of the physicians that I have used there. But the fact remains that the Clinic is a group of Doctors who are running a business.
