Title: Atheist Songs
Post by: Stevil on November 04, 2011, 05:01:32 AM
Motorhead - Religion

Don't need no blind belief
Don't need no comic relief
Don't need to see the scars
Don't need Jesus Christ Superstar
Don't need no Sunday Television
Bet your life you don't need religion
Don't need no time for prayer
Don't save no knee-pads for me up there
If your head's alright, ya don't need binoculars to see the light
Ya don't need no miracle vision
Bet your life you don't need religion

I don't need no Santa Claus
Don't believe in fairies no more
Don't need to go to confession
I'm already trying to fight depression
Don't need no exorcism
Bet your life you don't need religion

Metal....I love metal.

Two members of Slayer are atheists, Kerry King and Dave Lombardo.
Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge
Kevin Cameron of I Killed the Prom Queen
Although not metal, Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind
Geddy Lee of Rush
Till Lindemann of Rammstein
All the members of Napalm Death
Wayne Static of Static-X.
Eddie Vedder

I get the feeling there are a disproportionately high number of Heavy Metal fans amongst the Atheist community as compared to the percentage in society at large.

I wonder if there is correlation between HM listeners and Atheists, directly connected to studies in 2007 which demonstrated correlation between intelligence and listening to HM.

http://www.canada.com/saskatoonstarphoenix/news/story.html?id=5cf4eb30-8161-4d71-8dce-79432dbe39aa&k=70277 (amongst others...)

Must be true - I love HM. :D

If I could work out how to set up the 'poll' function, it might be an interesting experiment to poll everyones preference for music genre... Tank?

Lemmy is a legend no matter what music your into.

It quite rare to hear tracks with atheist content but then again the majority of music I listen to is instrumental, the only ones I can think off are NOFX - Idiots have taken over, NOFX - Leaving Jesusland, and many references in OFWGKTA tracks.

@Scissorlegs, I'm not fan of heavy metal I use to love it in my early teens but now I just can't listen to it.

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75UeVLbkXeg) here is quite amusing for a Country song.

Hahaha you may be correct. I cant stand vocalists unless they adds something to the music or are strangely beautiful, with the only type of guitar led music I like to listen to now is that in a similar vain of Jack Wilkins. Metal has too much of a focus on the front man and guitar (that uses way too many power chords) for me these days, it use to really resonate with me but it just doesn't do anything any more.

You know, there are such things as Industrial Rock and Metal, which have synth-driven songs like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqsrt567aVI) for instance

Interesting, I always meant to check out what industrial rock was though never got round to it. Not really for me though but still interesting.

Hmmm, I think there are better examples of the genre:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUnRLl7I5_o&feature=related (Fear factory - Also did a more electronicised version of this album which is good)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvsMPOfblfg (Rob Zombie - the pinnacle of the genre IMHO)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKEBhDX7rQg (Marilyn Manson - is a Reverend in the Church of Satan)

I often have a mood for these, and also enjoy the more traditional thrash, black and core metal - as well as some energetic speed metal. There's so much great noise out there...!

'In-flames' is a bit lightweight for me.

Asmo, you ever heard of Hysterica (another Sweedish export)? I'm off to see them in two weeks. A friends' band are supporting. They are quality current HM - and nice to look at too (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ma1-Lwpkhk0). When I meet them, I'll ask their religious views...

My kids like HM and they asked me for something heavier. I fed them some grind-core and nearly made them cry (i was pretty disturbed myself). Think we'll stick to Iron Maiden for them!

Sabaton - Burn your crosses (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh2IDlME6io")

No use to pray, there's no one listening
I will die anyway.
Some say I've killed, some call me Satan
Now my blood must be spilled.

I'm sentenced for crimes I did not commit
I'll pay with my blood, is this really it?
Creations of God? No way!

::Burn your crosses, make way for science
Christ has only caused death and violence
Burn your crosses and make way for yourself
Put faith in mother earth.::
http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/sabaton/fistforfight.html#5

Don't really listen to the "heavier stuff", like Children of Bodom and I like pagan stuff too much to really care  ;D Turisas, Korpiklaani, Ensiferum, Hediningarna and Värttinä FTW  ;D

Besides, there's always Symphonies of Science (http://"http://www.youtube.com/user/melodysheep")  ;)

Odd...I did this some time ago and didn't find much, but this morning, the first hit while searching for "atheist songs" pulled up the top ten.
Slayer – "Jesus Saves"
Metallica – "Leper Messiah"
Jeff Buckley – "Eternal Life"
Bad Religion – "God's Love"
Tool – "Opiate"
Nine Inch Nails – Terrible Lie
George Gershwin – It Ain't Necessarily So
The Arcade Fire – "Intervention"
XTC – "Dear God"
John Lennon – "Imagine"

Five Finger Death Punch sings a couple songs like this. I love FFDP. Their Bon Jovi remake was better than Bon Jovi's...imo.

And then there's this site:

It seems to me, not being the most intelligent person in the world, that there is a lot of religion in these non-religious songs...it also seems to me there is not much difference between religious music and some lyrics posted here.  They both mention Jesus, prayer, God...one is for, the other "against", one uplifts one type, the other makes you smile and say, "yah!" when they deny, yet sing about, the non-existent.  Is that a double negative?

Just sayin'.  :)

"If god is throwing dice
And einstein doesn't mind the chance"

Bruce Dickinson - Navigate the seas of the sun

I like this phrase, it sounds like the god has to play by Einstein's rules. But of course this means that there is no all powerful god.

There is this thread with the very same name
http://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=5343.0

Bob Dylan
QuoteOh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And the land that I live in
Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.

The Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I's made to memorize
With guns on their hands
And God on their side.

The First World War, boys
It came and it went
The reason for fighting
I never did get
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.

When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And then we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war comes
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.

But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war.

That I wont believe this lie
When all there's something more inside
When darkness is all you see
This is our Sweet Blasphemy
-Sweet Blasphemy, Black Veil Brides.
I know that's not as heavy as the majority of the songs in this thread, but I love them. And Andy Biersack, singer and songwriter, is openly an atheist.

A Perfect Circle - Judith

You're such an inspiration for the ways that I will never ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you how your savior has abandoned you

Fuck your god
Your lord, your Christ
He did this
Took all you had and
Left you this way
Still you pray, never stray, never
Taste of the fruit
Never thought to question why

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you
He did it all for you

Oh so many ways for me to show you how your dogma has abandoned you

Pray
To your Christ, to your god
Never taste of the fruit
Never stray, never break, never
Choke on a lie
Even though he's the one who
Did this to you
Never thought to question why

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side
Talk to Jesus Christ as if He knows the reasons why
He did it all for you
He did it all for you
Did it all for you

Quote from: AnimatedDirt on November 14, 2011, 04:35:10 PMAnother angry "Atheist" song.  The truth, while twisted, is still "preached".
Yes, like Reverend Maynard once said:

And the angel of the lord came unto me, snatching me up from my place of slumber.
And took me on high, and higher still until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself.
And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own midwest.
And as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the soil.
One thousand, nay a million voices full of fear.
And terror possesed me then.
And I begged,
"Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?"
And the angel said unto me,
"These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots!
You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust."
And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared,
"Hear me now, I have seen the light!
They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul!
Damn you!
Let the rabbits wear glasses!
Save our brothers!"
Can I get an amen?
Can I get a hallelujah?
Thank you Jesus.

I'd say "the truth" is being mocked rather than preached but to each his own.  And I still don't understand why you'd think an a-theist song would be about anything other than not believing or not loving a god.

Rush, "Freewill":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnxkfLe4G74

QuoteThere are those who think that life is nothing left to chance,
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance.

A planet of playthings,
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive.
"The stars aren't aligned
Or the gods are malign"-
Blame is better to give than receive.

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear-
I will choose Free Will.

There are those who think that they were dealt a losing hand,
The cards were stacked against them- they were born in lotus-land.

All preordained-
A prisoner in chains-
A victim of venomous fate.
Kicked in the face,
You can pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate.

Each of us-
A cell of awareness-
Imperfect and incomplete.
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet.
