You're so sweet Icarus. :-*
If you were in line, I'd be standing close to you breathing down your neck, and you would probably turn and say to me, "I think you're attracted to me and I am flattered, I'm also attracted to you, may I give you a kiss?"...You would extend your arms as if to embrace me, hoping I back off...but wouldn't, I would just stand there and extend my arms as well. :D

And stroll right into town
And be just like the other men
I'm tired of monkeyin' around!
Oh, oobee doo
I wanna be like you
I wanna walk like you
Talk like you, too
You'll see it's true
An ape like me
Can learn to be human too
( Gee, cousin Louie
You're doin' real good
Now here's your part of the deal, cuz
Lay the secret on me of man's red fire
But I don't know how to make fire )
Now don't try to kid me, mancub
I made a deal with you
What I desire is man's red fire
To make my dream come true
Now give me the secret, mancub
Cmon clue me what to do
Give me the power of man's red flower
So I can be like you
You!

My daughter is one of the smartest, if not the most intelligent persons I know (She is also extremely kind, funny and probably the most organized person you could meet).
She received her BA in Chemistry from Kalamazoo College. Studied abroad one year at Curtin University of Technology in Australia, where she also spent 3 months at the Ningaloo Turtle Program in Exmouth where she studied and monitored marine turtle nests, eggs, and tracks as well as rescued beached turtles.
She completed her undergraduate thesis paper while conducting an independent research project performed under Dr. George Garcia at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy where she constructed a reporter plasmid for the detection of virB promoter activation through the use of a β-galactosidase assay.
She spent another year studying Anthropology and Health Services at the University of Missouri.

Nutritionist = quack.
Dietician = slightly lesser quack.
Unless you are a biochemist doing active research into epidemiology such a Richard Peto and T. Colin Campbell you pretty much aren't qualified to be giving dietary advice in relevance to health be that physically or mentally. A nutritionist isn't required to have any degree or tests, and a dietician only has to show they know the basics. Essentially a nutritionist is the epidemiology equivalent of Dr Dre to medicine.

Not sure where you get your information fuck-wad, my daughter is certified and licensed, you pathetic little piece of excrement. Certainly the doctor she works for thinks she is qualified to do the work she does for him, you sick twisted lump of slime.
So brave aren't you Crow, hiding behind the keyboard, down deep in your parents basement, still living at home, still unloved...pathetic really.
I mean living your life within the confines of a search engine on the internet, never really getting out and doing anything in the world; you want everyone to think you know so much, but in reality you know nothing, because you are nothing...this would explain why you never share anything here at HAF wouldn't it?

Temper temper Bruno. Such a funny man.
I can become a nutritionist I don't need qualifications nor do I need to be certified. Being a certified nutritionist doesn't exist, if there are certifications they aren't medically or scientifically recognised. If somebody was to get certified in the field of nutrition it would be a registered dietician (not a quack) or a doctorate studying biology and/or chemistry which is a totally different thing. A nutritionist is similar to homoeopathy or astrology. I would suggest you actually check if she is a registered dietician rather than a nutritionist because you wont get others flagging it up especially on an atheist forum where interest in science is more than the average. Why do I know this well it doesn't matter you have already made up your mind on what I am but you couldn't be more wrong but t gave me a chuckle.

Well yes and no, it started as light banter on something I was sure that most people would be aware of nutritionists perception in science, one that I particularly have an issue with especially the self styled youtube nutritionists that talk utter nonsense and recommended a rejection of well tested medicine in favour of the products they are advertising at over inflated prices and distort legitimate epidemiology research to fit their own narrative. A nutritionist is a quack and I will never back down from that but Brunos daughter is an RD (though would be over qualified for the position) at a minimum as that is a legal requirement to work in the medical field but a slight difference in the UK to the US is that nutritionist is often used as a job title for an RD in the US but avoided like the plague over here due to its associations, which I should have looked up before I said anything and If I knew that would probably have said different. If you told me your daughter was a fortune teller I would have also called her a quack and not expect the term to be used as a job title for a meteorologist in another country.
Carry on.

Thanks Claire, I appreciate the kind words, especially coming from you. Both my daughter and her husband are wonderful people and they both mean the world to me. Spending time with them is precious to me (Just came back from a long weekend at their place. We picked apples, made our own apple cider; plus took some long hikes in the woods and enjoyed the fall colors)
I removed the link to her website from my earlier post as I'm not as comfortable posting personal information here as I previously was, probably a mistake on my part in the first place.
Anyway I know I overreacted earlier, what can I say...I don't care if some here don't like me personally, but to attack my daughter like that after I posted a silly video in a light-hearted thread seemed a direct attack for no reason other than to try and hurt me by attacking her.
Too bad I guess, but it is the internet...lesson learned.
P.S. Can one of the mods please remove the link to my daughters website that is embedded in the post of mine that Crow quoted from? I would feel more comfortable if it was no longer linkable. Thanks-

Patience. At some point there should be another database fix that will bring many (if not all) of the missing threads and posts back. Meanwhile, a new GIF party would be cool, and as

Cool vid JJ. That dude was really fast with his saw and chisel. As one gear head to another, I appreciate the cleverness and skill of the subject craftsman.
The last bit shows him with a treasured boat building tool called a "Slick". The handle did not need to be that exotic, but that is what craftsmen do.
What's the typical bevel on a slick Icarus? I asked Chris in the comments but he didn't have an answer for me. Since watching that video some time ago I've wanted to make one but don't have an example at hand for reference. I feel like the primary bevel should be less than 25 degrees since they're used for paring more than a normal chisel. I have an old file that would make a fine cutting edge when forge welded to mild steel for the bulk of the material. It's a matter of forging as close to finish as possible though, as I don't have a fancy water cooled grinding system to hog out a lot of material if the slick doesn't perform well on the initial angle. Stones take a while....
People who used those regularly probably walk around in circles when they close their eyes.
Totally ruined it with the red and green paint.

Looks unfinished. With the unfinished wood the natural patina of the iron looked far superior as it was all in-keeping. Finish the wood and give it the Victorian decoration then hit the metal up with colour and you have a winner, preferably in the style of the Arkwright Carding Machine (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ed/Arkwright's_Carding_Machine_1775_MOSI_6395.JPG).

True.
JJ, the old time boat builders favor something in the 30 degree range. If too fine an angle it is a bit more vulnerable. Sure enough they are more often used for paring than for hacking.
Speaking of boat builder tools, have you thought of making an adze? Back in the day those old guys could square up a raw log so that it was near perfect and do it pretty quickly with a tool that looked like a potato hoe. That's when ships were wood and men were steel.

Just looking around this thread for the infamous vid of G85 singing Eric Clapton karaoke...must be somewhere else?
There are a number of posts and threads lurking in a database that have yet to make it into the current incarnation of this site. Only one of the admins is technically proficient enough to re-integrate them here, if it's even possible, and he's been very busy elsewhere.

Especially since I love Bolero (Who doesn't emirate?)...they looked like they were having fun, and probably make it look easier than it is.
To most folks reading this the following individual's name, Bob Dorough probably has no significance...unless of course you are a master of the cinema and you recognize him for some of his acting roles, or are a Jazz lover and know him from his time playing with Miles Davis, but for those of us grew up in the 70's, and who spent their Saturday morning's watching cartoons, he is the master of such "Schoolhouse Rock" classics as
"Conjuction Junction" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPoBE-E8VOc) or "
I'm Just a Bill (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyeJ55o3El0)".
Not sure if they showed this outside of the US, but back in the day before cable TV, when we only had 3-4 channels on the television to choose from cartoons for kids were primarily shown each Saturday morning.
School House Rock (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schoolhouse_Rock!) was what they referred to as an interstitial program, which meant it would be shown in-between two scheduled shows rather like a commercial.
As kids you knew they stuff was supposed to be educational, but these were done in a manner that captured some of our attention regardless, so we watched and got hooked on some of the songs, and I would be lying if said I still didn't occasionally break out in a little "Conjunction Junction" while doing my best Bob Dorough imitation.
Here's the short interview/Bio of Bob, who is as they say, an alright guy. 8)

^^Good one Sandy and Bluenose.^^
I was hanging out in downtown Detroit this afternoon, and on the way home I cruised around some of the old neighborhoods and it reminded me of this song and video.
A question... What does 'downtown' actually mean? Is it a geography thing about north and south? I've always wondered.
Usually "Downtown" refers to the main, or central area of a city. For Detroit it is the hub,...when city was originally designed by the French it was laid out in a pattern similar to a wheel, with the main, central location the hub of the wheel, and the major boulevards and avenues spreading out like the spokes on a wheel.

The reason I asked was it seems to get used in different ways by different people. Sometimes it seem to be a geography thing like in Manhattan but then I've seen it like you use as meaning the city centre. Then Billy Joel seems to use 'uptown' as meaning of an upper class area.

An important and vital scene from the movie, "Good Will Hunting"...
Earlier in the movie Matt Damon analyzes a watercolor painting which Robin Williams painted and which is hanging in his office.
Matt Damon concludes after studying the painting that it represents suppressed feelings and guilt Robin Williams is feeling over the premature death of his wife (This accusation stabs at Robin Williams and he lashes back out at Matt Damon, actually grabbing him by the throat and threatening him).
It is this presumption which Robin refers to at one point in this scene, saying, ...
But you presume to know everything about me because you saw a painting of mine, and you ripped my fucking life apart.Fucking presumptions, I feel the same way oftentimes.

So to put this in context:
In the Norwegian Armed Forces the Royal Norwegian Navy and the Royal Norwegian Air Force run their boot camps at the same base (KNM Harald Haarfagre). So obviously there is some competitive sentiment between the two services. This year apparently, 3rd Company (Navy) decided to upstage everyone else with a little show at the end of the graduation ceremony.
Fun fact: The room at the end of the ground floor on the building behind them is my old room. 2nd Company! Hell yeah! 8)

That's the Navy for ya', always having fun, dancing and singing, with endless hot-showers, and hot fresh meals.... ;D
That was very cool Gman, what a difference between the way you feel the day you graduate, and the first day you arrive...but that was well done,... although I have no idea how to pronounce the name of the base (Haaaarfaagogre?)
By the way were you Navy or Air Force, and how long is boot camp normally?
I was Air Force, naturally. And boot camp was 7 weeks when I was in. After that you are sent of to get training in what will become your main service function.
The reason you have trouble getting your head around the name of the base is that the Norwegian language contains a few sounds that don't exist in English. I wrote the name using the English alphabet, where we usually use aa in stead of the letter å.

Very cool, I really like his son's name, Eric Bloodaxe.
There is a older guy at the athletic club I belong to who is from Norway and I saw him today, and showed him your post and video, and asked him to pronounce Harald Haarfagre name for me so I could hear it, very cool.
He's an older guy, thick accent, everyone calls him Mort, but I believe his name is Morten or Mortan?
Anyway he really enjoyed your video, and talked a lot about Norway, said his brother went through the same base as you, but with the Navy...he talked for about 45 minutes, longwinded, but really nice guy.

Yes, I agree with Joe, utterly fascinating. Thanks for posting.
This video by NASA gives you a first person view of what it looked like when the Orion spacecraft re-entered Earth's atmosphere.
The 10-minute ride begins with Orion travelling around 32,200 kilometres per hour (20,000 miles per hours) and is about to reach the Kármán like – a point 100 kilometres (62 miles) above Earth's sea level that represents the boundary between Earth's atmosphere and outer space.
When Orion reaches this point, the friction between the spacecraft's heat shield and Earth's atmosphere create's super-heated plasma, giving us a spectacular light show.
The journey continues at Orion plummets towards Earth, eventually using its parachutes and splashing down into the Ocean.
The point of this test was to replicate the full force of re-entering Earth's atmosphere at velocities close to the speed a spacecraft would be traveling if it was returning from deep space.
Bit of background on this one...
The guy in the hat is "Big Chuck" Schodowski and the other guy is Houlihan.
They did a late night movie show on tv when I was a kid. Heir to the Ghoulardi thrown.
Later became the Big Chuck and Little John show (and still running in Cleveland)
They do lots of "Certain Ethnic" jokes, which they coined to replace Polish jokes (Big Chuck is Polish, and Parma is a big Polish area near Cleveland)
Anywho - here's a sample for your amusement...
Holy Parma Joe,
I wasn't that familiar with Big Chuck or Houlihan, but here in Detroit Ron Sweeny as the Ghoul was a favorite of my friends and I growing up in the 70's, that is until SNL came out.
Still nothing was better than sitting through some horrendous "B Movie", just to wait til' the Ghoul came back on to do his schtick.
Crazy, but fun times being 10-14 years old and watching crap on TV.
One of our favorite "B Movies" to watch was "The Creeping Terror".
Which distinguished itself by being listed among "The 100 Most Amusingly Bad Movies Ever Made", in Golden Raspberry Award founder John Wilson's book, "THE OFFICIAL RAZZIE MOVIE GUIDE".
We would recreate the scenes ourselves, even filmed some...copies of which I hope have been destroyed.
Here it is in all of it's glorious entirety.
That's cool, Bruno!
Used to be every market had it's own horror host. Cleveland had a bunch (SuperHost, The Ghoul, Ghoulardi, Big Chuck, etc)
Got my lunch viewing all set for "The Creeping Terror!"
I was skeptical when they announced they were going to make stand-alone Star Wars films, but this looks pretty promising.
Donnie Yen and Forest Whitaker. I'll watch that Star Wars movie and I couldn't care less about any of the others.
I liked this shot it has a nice 1970's science fiction vibe to it.

Many of the models don't actually attribute for humans themselves via respiratory processes and waste and many just look at direct chemical release through man made processes without looking at the natural processes. The estimated total impact of livestock agriculture to green house gas emissions is 51%. (http://www.worldwatch.org/node/6294) Then that isn't even factoring in things such as the ecosystem of our oceans being fucked because we have over fished them to the extreme (http://science.sciencemag.org/content/314/5800/787), that livestock agriculture is the prime attributer to deadzones (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/ocean-dead-zones/), species extinction (http://www.eoearth.org/view/article/150962/), water pollution (http://www.gulfhypoxia.net/research/shelfwide%20cruises/2014/hypoxia_press_release_2014.pdf) and desertification (http://www.un.org/press/en/2012/gaef3352.doc.htm). The ocean deadzones and fishless oceans by 2048 is a far more worrying trend than emission based warming.

I agree that fossil fuels are not
the problem, but they are a big problem. I also agree that cows are a big portion of the problem. Human waste is also another big problem. There are a lot of problems that are contributing to global warming. If we're going to boil down all the problems to one, then the one that would reduce all the problems would be decreasing population growth, preferably down to reducing our population, because the more people there are, the more we pollute. I couldn't find the study off hand, but there is a study that showed that we here in the US are the biggest wasters (maybe not the biggest direct polluters anymore), per capita.
We need to stop growing our population, and I think we really need to start reducing our population. I'm not talking about killing people (though people will start starving to death anyway), but if more people would have no or just one kid, that would help a lot eventually. And people need to stop having more than two kids.

But the human population will plateau in due course and then reduce. We have passed 'peak child' already. The population 'growth' we are seeing at the moment is not caused by births but by people not dying as young. The average birth rate per family in developed countries is less than 2 right now. South Korea is so worried about its future population growth that it has passed a rule that people go home on time, not early, on Thursdays in the hope of more children being born. The birth rate in Japan is bottoming out and they are closing maternity wards.

That doesn't make me feel any better at all.
Me: "There are too many people already."
You: "Don't worry, when we even more people we'll stop making more people, and might even slow down to zero growth when there are twice as many people as there are now."
That answer does not alleviate the problem. So it might take a bit longer to get to the next billion people, in the meantime, we're tearing the earth as seven billion people. Then it might take a little bit longer to get to the next billion, in the meantime, we're still destroying the planet but a billion people faster.
The video is nothing new, it makes population growth sound as scary as I think it is. And it's great to predict things with statistics, but it doesn't control what will happen.
I'm not glossing over that there are too many people about. But the birth rate is declining on it's own. If that happens for long enough then humanity will go extinct, end of story. There is nothing we can reasonably do abut it so there is no need to loose sleep over it is there?

The birth rate seems to be declining on its own, at least for now. Reality is rarely a straight line that is presentable in statistics.
I'm not sure that there is nothing we can do about it, not that I'm losing sleep over it either way. I am revolted by this kind of defeatist attitude of "can't do anything about, so don't even try." Maybe I'm just being reactionary, but that is something I reject wholeheartedly. So many problems would have remained unsolved if no one ever rejected that view.

I often feel the solutions presented to the populations as a way of preventing or at least slowing down warming is pointless and flat out unnecessary. Even though it would help it isn't even a drop in the ocean. We know the simplest and quickest solution that would pretty much stop it in its tracks especially in the short term due to methane is to halt livestock production. This would also massively reduce the risk of a large scale killer virus due to over use of antibiotics in the industry but that is a different issue (bird flue, swine flue anyone). Even stopping the production of beef would make a massive difference.
However people aren't going to listen to this but if you look at the difference between what a person who doesn't eat animal products contributes to per day in comparison to one that does daily the non-animal product eater "... saves 1,100 gallons of water, 45 pounds of grain, 30 sq ft of forested land, 20 lbs CO2 equivalent, and one animal's life." (http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10584-014-1169-1/fulltext.html) per day, you may have stopped driving that car, started reusing waste water, composting your biodegradable's, recycle all your rubbish but eat that one burger and you may have well just been wanking into a cup your effort would have been far more beneficial.
People say we need to reduce the population, we are already producing enough food to feed 10 billion people (http://www.commondreams.org/views/2012/05/08/we-already-grow-enough-food-10-billion-people-and-still-cant-end-hunger) in crops but most of that goes to animal feed, then we look at the facts of starvation and 85% of children dying of starvation (http://www.unicef.org/gambia/Improving_Child_Nutrition_-_the_achievable_imperative_for_global_progress.pdf) live in countries where crops are grown to feed animals then the animals are sent to countries with money. A farm with 2,500 dairy cows produces the same amount of waste as a city of 411,000 people (http://nepis.epa.gov/Exe/ZyNET.exe/901V0100.TXT?ZyActionD=ZyDocument&Client=EPA&Index=2000+Thru+2005&Docs=&Query=&Time=&EndTime=&SearchMethod=1&TocRestrict=n&Toc=&TocEntry=&QField=&QFieldYear=&QFieldMonth=&QFieldDay=&IntQFieldOp=0&ExtQFieldOp=0&XmlQuery=&File=D%3A%5Czyfiles%5CIndex%20Data%5C00thru05%5CTxt%5C00000011%5C901V0100.txt&User=ANONYMOUS&Password=anonymous&SortMethod=h%7C-&MaximumDocuments=1&FuzzyDegree=0&ImageQuality=r75g8/r75g8/x150y150g16/i425&Display=p%7Cf&DefSeekPage=x&SearchBack=ZyActionL&Back=ZyActionS&BackDesc=Results%20page&MaximumPages=1&ZyEntry=1&SeekPage=x&ZyPURL). If the entire planets population wanted to et the same amount of meat as the US then it is predicted we would need about 5 to 7 other planets (it might be 3 to 5 can't remember exactly) to do so, the thing is countries like China, Brazil, India do want to eat that much and every year we see a massive growth in fact by 2050 if it continues at the same rate pollution from the livestock industry is estimated to almost double and that isn't factoring in unexpected jumps due to economic surges. The we have deforestation due to animal produce that creates more pollutions whereas plants pretty much do the opposite, it still has its problems (nitrogen and soil erosion) but there are solutions such as agroforestry (http://www.viagroforestry.org/files/2014/05/Tree-Illustration_PLAIN-01.jpg) that would quite frankly be fantastic if put into place, you would still be able to get a small portion of animal product but these would be at the end of an animals natural life like old fashioned farming was done. The livestock industry is so far out of control it is insane that it isn't brought to light more often and when the facts are presented I don't know how something hasn't been done about it already, especially seeing as none of the data is new.

While I don't have a solution myself, I don't think that halting livestock production is something that will happen before it's too late. Too many people like eating meat, and too many people are against not eating meat. Sure a lot of things would be unnecessary if only everyone in the world followed one thing, but that's not how anything works in reality. I think the best we can hope for is a slow down in many different areas, then work on reversing. You cited a source saying how many resources a meat eater requires per day, then say that having fewer of those meat eaters (population control), would be pointless and flat out unnecessary. To me that doesn't track at all.
I don't argue that nothing needs to be done with livestock production, but I think it's naive to think that we should focus on things that are also polluting that we can and are reducing, to focus on just one thing (especially if that one thing won't likely happen in time). I do think that we can reduce the amount of livestock production, but at the same time we can do other things that will help a lot as well.

I can totally agree that it isn't going to change especially as it is forecast to grow. There would need to be a huge shift in public opinion, primarily western opinion, hopefully eastern before that becomes the next problem but we know that isn't going to happen.
Maybe other things will help. but even with total removal of co2 from technology we still hit 2030 point of no return, and the removal of all technology isn't going to happen either. We are pretty much at the point of no return for action at the moment because even our most drastic measures would take a long time to implement. There is a clear presented solution I find the evidence to be overwhelming, one that would be difficult for some but more imagined than what it is in reality but like you highlighted due to attitudes we are pretty much fucked regardless and if anything is to be done it needs to be at the national and international level however those attitudes persist there.
Yeah, unless someone comes up with something new, along with reducing costs and pollution, we're going to hit a very shitty period of time for at least a century. Even if something new and exciting isn't discovered, we can make it less shitty and maybe take less time. At least that is my realistic goal.
The other thing I worry about, is if someone does discover some thing that fixes several of the current problems, then everyone will think everything is fine again and we just push the shit 50 years ahead.

Interesting video. It never sits well with me when people use science to confirm their biases. This reminds me of how some really intelligent people created a field of science to measure the size of skulls and ended up using the measurements to differentiate between the races.
QuoteIn the 19th century, the British used craniometry to justify its racist policies toward the Irish and black Africans, whom the British considered to be inferior races. Irish skulls were said to have the shape of Cro-Magnon men and were akin to that of apes, proof of their inferiority along with black Africans. In France, Paul Broca demonstrated that women are inferior to men because of their smaller crania. He argued against higher education for women because their small brains couldn't handle the demands.
http://skepdic.com/cranial.html
So now we see an explanation for why conservatives seek stability and don't like change. They primarily process information though fear and make decisions based on their emotional convictions and religion while liberals seek change and make their decisions from new information, science information.
Maybe I am comparing apples to oranges here since she is using the size of different brain structures to explain differences between liberals and conservatives instead of using physical differences to explain why one race is superior to another. She did invoke the Bell Curve to demonstrate that these findings obviously don't apply to everyone.
This post has been brought to you by Jason's enlarged right amygdala.
Well, she is talking about tendencies here, not absolutes.
What I would like to see is differences in glucose uptake, which shows which structures are more metabolically active during certain situations when comparing liberals and conservatives. Such studies are most probably out there, I'll have a look when I have the time.

Then you had a, probably genetic, advantage over others, Essie! My questioning started very early, before I was ten, and neuther received nor required any external encouragement, just the inherent need to analyse, question and understand.
It is interesting that converdion to religion usually seems to need, from anecdote, persuation, coercion or "revelation". Converdion to atheism modtly seems to vome from a building sense of disillusion, rational devusion based on ecperience etc.
Those with an inherent, or a residual, need for a structure, for a "congregation" , may become humanists.
We have previously discussed, here, whether the genetic makeup of atheists is different from that of the theists. Some of us need tangible evidence in order to support a hypothesis. Some do not.
High school physics students do experiments to verify that light is bent (refracted) when it passes through a medium like glass or water. The students do experiments that demonstrate the behavior of a falling body, or they may assign the coefficient of friction of a certain sliding body by experimental means that demonstrate with hard evidence that something is true and predictable. Or calculate the period of a pendulum with respect to its radius of gyration. ( I'm thinking about Galileo's experiments that almost got him assassinated) About seven or eight out of ten of those students will go to bible study on Wednesday night and believe all kinds of supernatural things, many of which contradict what they have seen with their own eyes in physics class. Suspension of disbelief is great when we are reading Harry Potter or watching a movie. Not so great when we apply fantasy reasoning to real world situations. .
.........................never mind, I must be on a geriatric rant.
If they get you young enough, any genetic tendency towards questioning the status quo is thoroughly quashed. It can take a lifetime for that tendency to gain traction, and for some, in spite of any innate tendency, it never happens.

I have met those, adults, whose tension between inherent tendency and imposed "rules" have all but torn them spart.
A very minor instance io this is the tiny twinge of guilt I still feel, at almost 72, if I wear green and blue together. Goes back to childhood and my adored sister saying, "Never wear blue and green without another in between."
Also shows that things in certain language formats, like verse, stick better. Things put to music stick better as well, try putting a hard to remember telephone number to a known tune. Both the concious effort and the tunefull mnemonic help fix the thing.
So, if you want kids to learn something put it to music, get them singing it as a
herd group! Christianity is good at that trick.
So was Ann McCaffrey in her "Dragons of Pern" series with the "Harpers" being the teachers using "teaching songs".

This is based on Berkeley Breathed's 1991 children's book A Wish for Wings That Work: An Opus Christmas Story.

QuoteHopefully in the rubbish pail. We can do better than that and we will with an eventual Opus film... but I'm glad you enjoyed it. I presume your family was on speed when they watched it. I would imagine it helps.

The following video is about Harold von Braunhut (1926-2003) who was the inventor/marketer behind X-Ray Specs, and Amazing Sea-Monkeys. (Apparently and unknown to me von Braunhut was also a nasty racist who, even though he was Jewish, supported the KKK and other white supremacist groups.)
I never bought or ordered these wonderful creatures myself, but I alway's enjoyed the adds and wonderful illustrations of Joe Orlando.

Though I never got around to buying any Sea Monkeys myself either, I found the video interesting and entertaining. Thanks for posting it, Bruno de la Pole. :)

I'll post that link here: Building Your Own PC: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLymSITx6pUAl1YL-jvyOyU-Rr5LHewTZL
But that got me to thinking, hey my car needs work done, nobody is around to teach me and I don't have a high mechanical learning inclination so what if there are videos to tell you how to build an engine? I could know where everything goes and what to replace so I found a few videos, well ALOT of videos on that and they were all put into a nice little playlist for me already. I'll post that...Here: Engine Building: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLadDQnvFIb-m6WB3XfMiETYdGMlnHJXy2
Enjoy!

Arturo. That was not jazz. There is a distinct difference between "big band" and jazz. Big band is much more carefully structured whereas Jazz relies quite a bit on improvisation by featured musicians. Both forms rely on the competence of the individual musician as most forms of instrumental music do.
Here is an example of the jazz genre....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBJ-MmTA-eU&t=38s The featured musician here is Wynton Marsalis an acknowledged wizard with his trumpet. A different ball game from Big band.
Big band was the popular type in the 40s, 50s. Jazz has been in place for much longer, possibly an outgrowth of the type of New Orleans music from, the 20s onward.

I'm not overly familiar with Louis CK's material. Watched him on SNL, some of the late-night shows, few stand-up clips here and there, and I thought he was kinda of funny, but never really delved too deeply into his material.
Recently I came across some of videos from his show and am starting to get a bit hooked on him I admit, this clip with Robin Williams is really good, and sort of ironic at the end.

Dunno, but if it was did they pick the instances where the people did not rip into each other, verbally of ohysically?
Also, note the deliberate manipulations. Not done a careful study or analysis but, in the beer scene, they have to "meet at right-angles" after cooperative work,, even the position of the place to put the beer was determined. So, meeting at a corner, from different directions, deliberately modified from being directly opposite, gives more scope for interaction than meeting
across a table where about the only options are guarded acceptance or withdrawal. Do you feel better if the doctor's desk is at right angles to you or he or she uses it as a barrier between the two of you?
Subtle, but deliberate, manipulation is so common we very rarely notice it!

If it wasn't staged, it may have been set up for maximum theatrical effect. They did not give their own analysis of what happened so it can't be scientific. More like they took us for a ride of what science would be like if we did it.

No it would not be, that many kats in one place would kill me...what with the dry desert air, and all of those kat allergens floating around, fuck that shit...I did like the video though, especially the one cowboy sitting around the fire using a lint brush to get the kat hair off his jacket ;D ;D

What happens when a LEGO replica of a Porsche 911 crashes into a tiny wall at 28 mph? We now know it's more beautiful than we ever could have imagined...Filmed at 1000 fps, the footage allows you to watch every piece of brick/shrapnel fly majestically through the air.
Set to the tune of Johann Strauss II's 'The Blue Danube Waltz' (you'll know it when you hear it), the three-minute video is hypnotizing.

High speed photography is great fun. Got to play with a 40 000 fps camera in one job, miliseconds of usable film, needs good trigger timing techniques. Then we borrowed a 500 000 000 fps job (yes, 5 x 10^8 - that is slow these days, think 5 trillion, 5 x 10^12). Only 8 usable frames, timing needs to be perfect!
Latest technique:

Have to agree with a lot the man says but the video images make it seem mere propaganda*, not rational argument. And, once again, the answer is, "What is the solution?"
Human rights only for white Europeans in Europe? Is that 7th generation French person of African origin or the 20th generstion of Pakistani descent really trustworthy? Export all others to a part of the world that is already struggling to feed its present population? Send all Syrians back to Syria to fester in hatred and have only the ambition to pay Europe back for it?
I have no idea of the solution, only the feeling that it will involve at least a loss of rights for all and a lot of bloodshed for some, no matter what is done. It is a slow war that could fester for many decades.
Perhaps the strictest possible sanctions on any country - and I mean the virtual closing of borders by means of force - and against any suspected individual or company giving funds or equipment to terrorists - or any who deal with these. The international rules, including the Geneva Convention and most of the UN rulebook will need rewriting, assuming the UN even survives at all.
Short of total "beliefocide" the more Muslims you treat badly chances are the more terrorists you will generate. Catch 22 has nothing on this.
But I have to agree, despite the inhumanity of the barring of all imigration, importing the problem does seem stupid.
The possibilities of making matters far worse are easy to slip into.
* Added later: one might draw a parallel between the nostalgic images in that video and the invoking of a mythical Gernan history that the Nazi party used, comparing that with images of grinning rich Jews getting out if big cars. In both cases the poor and underpriveledged, due to the normal strata in society at that time, were kept well out of the picture. There are differences in content but similarity in intent.
I watch this to remember the good times, when President of the USA was a decent, fairly cool, somewhat funny, likable and intelligent man...because now we have the exact opposite in President Dickhead.

Is not tai chi a form of meditation of practiced properly? Used to do a kind of meditation where you concentrate on the world without and your links to it, your senses and sensations, then gradually shutting them down yet never losing the link at a subconcious level. Part of a "practical philosophy" course that was equal parts bunkum and common sense.

I came in at V27, 4.8kb/s and promoted myself up to V34, 28.8kb/s, as Brit Tekecomm got their arse in gear and until they installed cable here.

I have great memories from that time.
Learning how to program was difficult, but it was very rewarding. And programming is something that I'm pretty good at and is my current profession. Also when I started trying to make PC games. Spent so many hours that all ended up coming to nothing, but it was fun and I did developed some skills from it.
It was also when I started doubting the religion I was brought up in.
There are also embarrassing memories, because I thought I was so awesome when I found some security exploits or when some idiot on a public website did something stupid like leaving the default password on things.
I don't know, I had fun back then and I learned a lot.

Ah, memories...horrible ones. :sadcheer:
I have great memories from that time.
Learning how to program was difficult, but it was very rewarding. And programming is something that I'm pretty good at and is my current profession. Also when I started trying to make PC games. Spent so many hours that all ended up coming to nothing, but it was fun and I did developed some skills from it.
It was also when I started doubting the religion I was brought up in.
There are also embarrassing memories, because I thought I was so awesome when I found some security exploits or when some idiot on a public website did something stupid like leaving the default password on things.
I don't know, I had fun back then and I learned a lot.
I remember having to wait more than 30 minutes for a 15 second video to download. I remember using my slow internet only late at night so that I wouldn't miss any phone calls during the day. ::)
I also remember this little guy: ;D

Some truth in that, back in my day ...
But, those kids at the local primary school who were disallowed from playing competitive sports - oh, they did the sports, just that everyone, first and last, got the same prize - are now in their late teens. They form part of the "entitled generation" over here.
They dropped tge idea after a few years because the kids, boys and girls, only found other, less regulated and potentially dangerous, ways to compete, just as humans will.

I was wondering how you would take this test as maybe the intended audience for this video would be American or at most native english speakers. (not that there is anything wrong with not being native english speaker, i was just curious).
I actually didn't have anyone for my companion but I had a good feeling, so I wrote that down. But I also had a person in mind, so I wrote that too. The other ones were kind of unimpressive until I got to the cup. My results for that are weird as I'll explain.
Many times I wrote two things and both descriptions were right but here is the kicker: when I wrote for the cup, I wrote both styrofoam and gold. Styrofoam is a easily broken material. Gold is also easily broken with your hands but it's also a metal, which according to the explination, metal means there is a strong bond in the relationship. I guess it just shows my relationship is complex? And that some parts are strong but also broken? I suppose that makes sense if we are talking about the person I had in mind but not the feeling I got.

I don't know if that applies, it's not like there was any obscure or difficult to understand language in the video. The metaphors weren't difficult to understand as well, and would have worked in other languages.
The person I chose to walk through the forest with me is someone very dear to me so that one I consider a hit rather than a miss. The animal I first thought of was a wolf, simply because I love wolves and would be thrilled to see one. Then the video goes on to say that the size of the animal represents the problems I feel I face. I consider that one a miss. My problems are more the size of an elephant than a wolf. What did I imagine myself doing as I interacted with my problem? Looking at it in awe -- because, like I said, I love wolves. Not afraid, not wanting to destroy it, but doing nothing but looking at it and smiling. According to the video, I'm passive when it comes to dealing with issues, which is not true. I pick my battles but I don't avoid or run from them. I consider that a miss.
When it comes to the maze I think the video itself already leads you into seeing a high walled maze because of that initial background image. I remembered that suggestive image and imagined a low walled hedge. I am more introverted, 'closed' and tend to keep my defences up rather than the contrary. I can't say I consider that one a hit or a miss because I did imagine (or rather remember) that exact background image first, but since there that pic was there in the first place I won't consider this a hit or a miss. Next!
I imagined a ceramic cup. I don't know why. I would hope that my relationship with that special person is not as fragile!
What else...I imagined the exit was easy to find on my own without having to be rescued by the person I left at the entrance, which did not match with what my adolescence was like. Miss.

Now that you mentioned it I do vaguely recall the scene...
My girlfriend was the person I picked, because we like to walk around outdoors a bit. I'm closest to her, but if she didn't like walking around outdoors, then I probably would have imagined someone who does, not necessarily a person close to me.
I imagined a coyote because I saw one the last time I went hiking. It ran away as soon as it saw me, because that's what they tend to do in real life. However, most of my life challenges I have to actually work through no matter how much I dislike it. Problems don't just turn and run away when I look at them.
I imagined a big maze with 10' walls because that sounds cool. Not because I'm a closed off person. I'm not really a closed off person, I mean I don't tend to say much personal things about me to random internet strangers, but I get personal with many people.
I imagined the cup was brass because I imagine it was in the center of a huge tall maze and that seemed appropriate. I don't see how that has anything to do with my relationship with my GF.
I left the cup there, that's supposed to mean that it's because I'm not close to my GF, but to me, I leave things alone that aren't mine.
I think that mazes, while fun, are not very difficult. So while I didn't have an answer that matched what I thought, "Too easy" was the closest.
There is too much symbolism with meanings assigned to them that do not work for me.

NOT that it's a bad thing! I wasn't the one who made the video so I thought there
might be some inherent bias as the creator would only be able to make the video for their country of origin.

might have only known united states culture and therefore made a video towards them. And people in the us are the main users of the internet last that I checked. I'm not making excuses for him/her. I saw the maze as about 7' high, partly as I was in Hampton Court Maze only a few days ago and it was about that, or maybe a bit higher, so it was on my mind and also why would my partner, (chose Mr M) advise me not to go in if it was a very low one?
I 'saw' a rigid plastic cup which was said not to be durable. Well I beg to differ, the bloody things will probably be around longer than we are.
There was also a spelling mistake, all of which shows me to be a moaning, curmudgeonly, pernickety old trout devoid of any personality at all. I'm clearly traumatised and need counselling. What have you done to me Arturo?

Hilarious Davin. I watched the whole damned thing.
I once had a telephone scammer tell me that he was the county building inspector and that I needed to send money. I played with him for only a few minutes and then wearied of the game, whereupon I suggested that he eat shit with a dirty spoon and several other things. I was not nearly as creative as the guy in the vid.
Here is a toast to the scammer who was antagonizing the scammer.

Wow, there is so much in that video that is not well thought out. "Debunked" is not a very good descriptor for the video. It was very difficult to watch and there was much cringing.
The idea that free speech should not be prioritized, is a misrepresentation of the other side. Let's say that you have a field of different food stuffs. Now everyone agrees that all the food should be free to grow, but the cabbages become the favorite of wild rabbits. Under this naive idea presented in the video, we should do nothing about the cabbages. If all the food is equal, then we can't do more to protect the cabbages than we do for other things. There is an ideal world, actually billions of them, but we live in none of them. Sometimes we have to do things that should and would not be required if we lived in one or many of those ideal worlds, judging actions as if we lived in one of those ideal worlds is childish and ill borne.
The Nazi guy got his point across and there was no one there to receive his speech. The right to free speech is not the same as the right to be heard by the people of your choosing. While the people did not act very well, he was not arrested nor detained for his little sign. Using examples like this is known as cherry picking and is a dishonest tactic.
People do not have rights to speak at campuses. Or to speak at specific places. The places they may want to speak at have rights as well. Again, the right to free speech is not the same as the right to be heard, but this guy seems to keep on conflating them.
No one is restricting Nazi speech. Not giving a platform to someone is not the same as denying them free speech. That's not licensed speech either, no one is issued a license. Nazi's and the KKK keep getting their permits to march and protest, they have their rights. No one gets the right to make other people spend money and resources to allow them to speak somewhere.
I agree with the right to free speech, but this guy in the video is trying to take it from the right to speak freely, all the way to forcing other people into doing things for those speaking. He is even implying that one should listen to things just because they disagree with it. That's fine in small amounts, but it gets tedious especially if the speech I disagree with is irrational.
Otherwise, other little bits mixed in were alright. I didn't find it very interesting. Even Nazis have the right to free speech. Even people I disagree with have the right to free speech. But, because the guy kept trying to drive his point in I'll repeat my counter, I don't have the right to force a university to put me up on a stage to talk to an audience.

But, because the guy kept trying to drive his point in I'll repeat my counter, I don't have the right to force a university to put me up on a stage to talk to an audience.
Oprah had a segment a long time ago where she had KKK members on her show and they ran rampant with their rhetoric. She later said that she would never do that again because she realized she gave them a platform to gainer attention. And she has the right to do that. She owns the show. She had her name on it. And the same with Universities. They have the right to let in who they want. The fact the Universities got pulled into all these a couple years back blew the whole thing up and made it all complicated and difficult to deal with. So now you have communist shills trying to push into that by saying "the elites" don't want that to be heard. And then you have the idea that what you mentioned is that everyone should listen to ideas that that don't agree with. And again I'll echo you and say that does get tedious. Also some people have specific triggers on their mental state as not one person is perfect, and saying one thing can trigger that reaction in someone. And that also got blown out of proportion when people started using the word "trigger" as a bad thing and people like that are "snowflakes" and should be perceived as weak and not taken seriously and met with hostility. Again I want to say that were communist shills but I digress. The recurring thing that I am seeing here is that anyone who would get in their way by having a rebuttal is taken out of the equation before they get the chance all the while proposing their ideas. It's a well coordinated movement and this is not by accident. Someone is behind this and the kinds of people who make videos like these are being used. They are a tool to garner some sort of traction for something bigger.
I'll just point out that in the US, publicly funded universities have to make a very strong case for refusing to offer a platform to any particular speaker, especially if the speaker has been invited by students of the university. This is because their use of government funds makes them subject to the 1st Amendment. Generally, such universities choose alternative means to try to prevent a speaker from taking the stage (charging security fees (https://eu.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2018/01/18/richard-spencer-michigan-state-university/1044354001/) for instance), or end up allowing the speaker on campus (https://eu.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2018/01/18/richard-spencer-michigan-state-university/1044354001/).
I don't think many Universities are publically funded. Those would be called community colleges I think. Universities are usually privately funded by the students tuition and and books I think. I wouldn't be surprised if they had other ways to gain money though since that is they way banks are as well. Which is why they don't suddenly collapse whenever they give out a loan. They actually use money that people give them in certificates of deposit that they hold onto for several years while gaining interest in your account. So it wouldn't be surprising to me if Universities had some other clever way to gain money.
Also since the financial crisis in 2008, I think a lot of the government had to step in and clear out the bankrupted students and pay their student debts which put the Universities and Colleges into the debt of the government on a social and political scale. Since they kept them from failing, they are able to control what they are doing. And they can let them fail at any point they want unless the Universities continue to do what the government tells them to. I see a lot of that happening in different ways. they went after Facebook for their private data mining and selling but just this time last year they passed a law that allowed the ISPs that privilege. So it's really an underhanded move that allows them to tip the scale into a biopoly of the information market between the ISPs and the all powerful Google. And to be fair, Google probably has so much information that they can blackmail just about anybody they want without having to spend a single dime in lobbying.
Universities do have to make strong cases, but it's ultimately not so much a first amendment issue as it is a school one.
Almost all universities in the US take government money. I can't think of one that doesn't. Part of taking government money should mean that they should also comply with the same rules that the federal or state governments who give them the funding follow. And that is part of the rulings that work out for schools who are found in violation of things like forcing prayer on students. Universities, so far I think, have been very good about allowing people to speak, they rarely ever turn anyone down, so I don't have too much of a problem with them as a whole. Sometimes they dis-invite people I think should speak.
What's odd to see, is that the people that are so loud talking about how Nazi's should always be allowed to speak, are almost completely silent when non Nazi, non racist, or non fascist speakers are denied. Again, counter to their own narrative of saying all speech should be allowed equally, they defend Nazi's and racists much more loudly than others. It's thin, so it's odd how people can't see through that facade.

From Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_know_that_I_know_nothing):
Quote"I know that I know nothing" is a saying derived from Plato's account of the Greek philosopher Socrates. It is also called the Socratic paradox. The phrase is not one that Socrates himself is ever recorded as saying.
This saying is also connected or conflated with the answer to a question Socrates (according to Xenophon) or Chaerephon (according to Plato) is said to have posed to the Pythia, the oracle of Delphi, in which the Oracle stated something to the effect of "Socrates is the wisest."
Thank you Silver. It is unfortunate that there are so many of us who have not been able to grasp the notion that we humans have barely scratched the surface of all there is to know.

He's quite the character.
what is it that he does? i read that he is a television personality?
his riding at the isle of man commands immense respect, but that doesn't mean he has a clue anywhere else.
My recollections of IOM heroes included names like Geoff Duke and Mike Hailwood. I reckon that dates me by quite a few years.
mike the bike is a legend that transcends generations. his life was a fairy tale.
i remember the hand-wringing that accompanied his return to the island, an old man in his forties destined to flicker out against the younger vital riders of the time. too old, too late, his reputation to be ruined by clutching at past triumphs instead of sitting back in his golden dotage.
and then he took his ducati to the winners circle, defying alk the odds and all the wisdom of his detractors.
a magnificent achievement.

He's a professional motorcyclist who became a bit of a TV personality because of his personality and 'get-stuck-in' attitude. Williams Motor racing took him on for one episode in the pit crew for tyre changing. He is the only none staff member ever to do this in a live race ever for any team. He's mad keen on engineering and all round nutter.

this is a fantastic video, and answers questions i have always had about combustion. it's a classic example of how a single improvement in observation can suddenly broaden your understanding of a subject.
think leewonhook and his microscope, or galileo and the moons of juipiter.
look at it from 3:00 on and you can see why alcohol as a fuel is so good at cooling a combustion chamber.
plus you can see how valve positioning affects swirl over the piston.
shame you can't easily do it with an overhead valve machine.
amazing

Yep. I appreciated that BR. I am so damned old that I can remember such things. We have gone a long way since then. In fact the farmer and his mule could have plowed four furrows while he was risking his life messing with that ancient CAT. I was especially thrilled at the suicidal cranking procedure with the long lever and the holes in the flywheel. In the olden days one did what one had to do even if was potentially fatal.
As a matter of fact I have operated a boat with and old Lunenberg make and break engine. It was also hazardous when cranking it.

This ending scene from the movie "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome", seems more than fitting during these strange, and turbulent times.
Quote"This you know, the years travel fast, and time after time I done the tell. But this ain't onebody's tell. It's the tell of us all, and you've gotta listen and to 'member, 'cause what you hears today you gotta tell the newborn tomorrow. I's lookin' behind us now into history back. I sees those of us who got the luck and started the haul for home, and I 'members how it led us here and how we was heartful 'cause we seen what there once was. One look and we knewed we'd got it straight. Those what had gone before had the knowin' and the doin' of things beyond our reckonin' — even beyond our dreamin'. Time counts and keeps countin', and we knows now: finding the trick of what's been and lost ain't no easy ride, but that's our track. We gotta travel it, and there ain't nobody knows where it's gonna lead. Still in all, every night we does the tell so that we 'member who we was and where we came from. But most of all we 'members the man who finded us, him that came to salvage. And we lights the city, not just for him, but for all of him that are still out there. 'Cause we knows there'll come a night when they sees the distant light and they'll be comin' home."
That's a wonderfully creative lecturer.

A message from my favourite YouTube movie reviewer
It's kind of funny to hear a man whine about other people whining about what other people are saying. If he objects to it so much, why contribute into the pool of things he objects to?
And death threats? Please. Death threats are unfortunately the status quo of putting things online. No matter what you say, or how you say it, some fragile little piece of shit will likely threaten your life. Probably a bunch of them. I've gotten a lot. One time all I posted was, "I don't agree." and got several death threats. That's a vary naive thing to bring into his rant.
Most of his points fall very flat and to anyone who's been online for a few years are pretty stupid. It's like those stupid astrology things, they pretty much apply to anyone and everything and only naive people think it matters.

Meanwhile the massive demonstrations have gone on for more than a useful period of time. Thier message is well delivered. Yes we are cognizant of the problem and many, I hope most of us, are paying attention. Peaceful demonstrations have now attracted and forcibly included the likes of the Boogaloos, Qanons, and other supremacist and extremist nut groups. You're sure making a terrible case for it so far.
Before even watching the video I'm going to predict some of the contents based on your statements and the title of the video. I'm guessing there's going to be something akin to victim blaming, straw men, misrepresentations, faulty equivalencies, and something about "black America" solving their problems by fixing themselves instead of worrying about the systems.
I'd also like to add, that I don't think this is the thread for this kind of thing, there are plenty of other threads meant for serious discussion.

After watching the video, yep, pretty much as expected. I wish I could have been surprised or at least a little wrong. Now I really don't think this video belongs in this thread because it sucks.
I don't think there is anything wrong with criticizing people, what I have problems with is criticizing straw men like in this video. It's dishonest work, but I suppose someone has to do it, otherwise what will gullible people base their misdirected rage on?

Let me give you an example of this. Undocumented workers, in the USA, are given, by the IRS, what they call, an ITIN number to report their taxes.
--"I don't want you here, you don't exist, but bitch, give me your money."
--I'm sure they have contributed a lot more than Trump has.
But, when the pandemic hit, they were not included in the govt economic stimulus package. They got zero. This included their USA citizen significant other and their USA born kids. They get no unemployment benefits, they don't qualify for anything, nada, no help..."But boy are we the ones messing up the economy!" "Why can't you guys get ahead!?" "Why do you guys live in such bad neighborhoods?" "Stop feeling sorry for yourselves!" ::)

Dear America,
Our whole lives you've wanted black people to 'love' you, to pledge their allegiance to you.
You want us to love you when serving in uniform, but when we are out of uniform, you throw us aside as if we never served and protected you.
You want us to love you when we protect your fancy cities, but you designed them to keep us out.
You want us to love you on the grand stage of the Olympics, but you give us no peace or justice at home.
You don't want us to expose your treatment of us to the rest of the world. You want us to stay silent and keep this a family secret.
Well, now everything has been exposed in broad daylight for the whole world to see.
...
If people want to get a group of people to give a shit about the social contract, then they should make sure that that group of people is protected by the social contract. It's hard to blame people for opting out of a contract that controls them but doesn't protect them.
Yes.
Let me give you an example of this. Undocumented workers, in the USA, are given, by the IRS, what they call, an ITIN number to report their taxes.

The pressures in a boiler and steam cylinder are no higher than a diesel engine. I suspect that steam engines have a bad reputation because of the early days of steam when there was a lot of dodgy materials used in boiler construction.

i love short films. th eshorter the better. its like extremely short poetry-- you have to do it all with almost nothing, no extra time to dither, no room for anything that isn't 100 percent focused on the result youre trying to achieve.
focusing is where a certain kind of powerful art comes into its own. you might not always like what its doing, but what ever it does do is riveting
there's a youtube medium called dust that showcases very short films. s some are quite good

That was excellent. I think people forget how much classical music composers used folk songs and traditional tunes in their work. The obvious ones are Bartok, Kodaly, and Mahler, but just about all the other big composers borrowed this kind of music.

by "no rider aids" theymean no anti-lock, no anti-wheelie, active suspension, none of the electronic gimmickrh that inserts a computer into the interface. thats how i do it all tbe time, but my street machines have maybe 40 or 45 horsepower, except for the buell . tbe race bike has maybe 65.
240 hp is beyond my understanding, let alone my experience.
wheres buddy gone?
That was fun to watch.
One of the problems with having too much horsepower is recovery from the corners. The bike is tilted way over, the rider is beginning to straighten up, but not quite there, at which time he applies throttle. Too much sudden horsepower sends the poor bastard into a god awful high speed high side. That is partly a tire problem but mainly a power delivery problem.
The wizards at Yamaha, for example, know about that deadly problem. They decided to produce a four banger whose crank is not 180 degree opposed. The whole aim is to have the power to be delivered in a controlled progressive way so that it does not suddenly come on like a cannon shot.
The dude in the video has big balls and a lot of good rider judgement, some luck of the gods too.. All that horsepower can kill him in a New York instant if he does not feather that throttle properly at every corner exit.
Honda and the rest of them, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Ducati, BMW, and the others are fully aware of the danger......Nut case riders maybe not so much.
The Honda and the mad man rider are spectacular, no matter the details.

Yes. They must be brought to heel.
Edit for clarity:
Yes. The Q people and so called "patriots" represent a potential threat. We need to have an organized effort against their false narrative and paranoid conspiracy theories. We need to take these people on. They are often connected with fringe right wing groups. They are not just groups of normal people anymore. They are often called the kinds of people who are patriots or conservatives, racist misogynist bigots. We can talk about how they ended up that way but first we have to bring them to heel.
WKRP in Cincinnati was a favorite show of me and my friends growing up while in High School. Back then our local radio stations had a huge influence on the music we listened to. I discovered Blues, Jazz and Classical music while laying in my bed at night, listening to some awesome late night shows on the radio.
Here in Detroit we had stations like WRIF, and WWWW, which was known as W4 (Howard Stern was a morning DJ here around 1980)
Howard Hesseman who played Dr. Johhny Fever on the show recently died, and since his death I have been rewatching the show. It's certainly brought back a lot of fond memories, the show was extremely funny (Thanksgiving Turkey Drop), as well as very insightful, especially to the alarming rise of the religious right here in the US.
First video in honor of Dr Fever is when the station changes from elevator music to rock and roll.
Second video is the famous Thanksgiving Turkey Drop, which features one of the best sitcom lines ever! "As god is my witness I thought Turkeys could fly".
Third video is when the program station manager speaks to a religious leader about censorship. At the time this aired I remember similar events with regards to censorship on the airways going on here in Detroit.
I graduated from a Catholic High School in 1982 (I know I'm old :P) We had voted as a class to have the song, "The End" by the Doors as our class song. However. The school decided the song was inappropriate, and wouldn't allow us to officially list it on the program, and made us choose another song. Most of us refused to vote on a new song out of protest so our Class President chose the song "Magic Power", by Triump :puke: (I've never forgiven Matt for this transgression)
They school rejected the song "The End", because of Oedipal section towards the end of the song, you know this part:
QuoteThe killer awoke before dawn
He put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door
And he looked inside
"Father?" "Yes, son?" "I want to kill you"
"Mother? I want to..."
For some of us, this rejection and censorship did not play well, and so we rebelled. At the official graduation mass, just as we were exiting the church at the end of the mass, and as a class body in our robes some of us recited out load the verse above. At first we discussed doing it in the church as we were walking down the center aisle, but some of our classmates thought it might be disrespectful to our parents who were sitting in attendance, so we waited until we hit the courtyard.
Here's the censorship clip.
