As far as the facts go, the journalistic integrity of the article is quite sound when compared to my paper. What I wonder about is why the civilized countries like Denmark, Norway and, or so I like to think of them, the UK can not just throw them the fuck out and be done with it... "You want sharia laws, do you? Back to Turbanostan you go, matey!" That would leave us with the second-generation-plus lunatics and those alone should be enough for anyone.

What frustrates me even more is that the "firestarters" are usually not even

The problem with freedom/democracy is that it only works when all the participants follow the rules. When a group choose to exploit a free/democratic process to build a power base it is a vulnerable system. It's also not a system that can respond to being undermined in a proportionate manner. It has to collapse before people can do anything about the undermining.
In the UK we recently had a referendum on whether we should change our voting system from a 'First past the post' system to a wishy-washy type of proportional representation. The conservitive (with a small 'c') view held on and we retained First past the post. This does protect parliment from fanatics and minority interest groups at the expence true democracy where everybodies vote should hold equal weight. But in this system minority groups feel disenfranched and thus justified in working outside the system.
The way to combat these minorities is to face them down and show why their views are wrong while the democracy is still stong enough to protects the rights of the individual (all individuals) to have their say.

And if they had even the slightest will to listen, I would agree. You can show an imported imam in a silly hat the wrongness of his ways all you want, but if your word is not a direct quote from his Book(tm), than it will go in one ear and out the beard.
It's not just the muslims, of course, so thanks for adding a wider perspective to my rant, but those do seem the most willing to go the distance, rather than just open their big mouths while being overall too satisfied with their lives within a western society to atually do something unless the perfet opportunity falls down on their head.
I do maintain, however, that we have quite enough domestic lunatics without importing any. And if we are going to import some anyways, praise be to the UN treaties, than we should expect them to accept - or, at the very least, not undermine our social structures and values, our laws and our culture. If they fail, there is always a return flight.
Sorry I didn't explain myself very well. IMO for democracy to survive the 'silent majority' must become the 'vocal majority' and give the politicians a power base to resist the 'vocal minority'. I don't think the Islamists will listen at all, but their opinion and desires will be marginalised and therefore can be safely ignored.

I, for one, and I do attribute this to the fact that I am a civilized being, would not react with more than a raised eyebrow to a caricature of myself with a Hitler stache backdoor screwing my own aged granddad's donkey. THEY have practically started a war over some benign caricatures of a guy, so many centuries since dead, that even his direct descendants should have no cause to be offended at what is being said and done to and about his image in the name of bad newspaper comedy. >:(

it's a real shame that a lot of religious folk appear to have been born without a sense of humour. Like you said, a few crappy drawings are not a reason to get angry.
One of my favourite paintings is of an old crone giving Jesus oral sex during his crucifixion, with Frankenstein's monster crucified one side of him and Pinocchio the other. I guess Christians might not appreciate the humour, but I certainly do!
