Title: Know any good quotes?
Post by: danny boy on February 16, 2011, 05:33:40 AM
I dont know about the rest of you guys, but I like reading inspirational/thought-provoking/funny quotes. I'm sure there are plenty of guys on HAF that know some good ones. I'll start us off:

"There is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance." - Socrates

"Money has never made man happy, nor will it, there is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. The more of it one has the more one wants." - Benjamin Franklin

"If Christ were here now, there is one thing he would not be â€" a Christian." - Mark Twain

Hello and welcome HAF, danny boy.

One that I came across just today:
QuoteThe charm of a man is measured by the charm of the women who think he is a scoundrel.

--H. L. Mencken

"With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion." - Steven Weinberg

"I think it's better to have ideas. You can change an idea. Changing a belief is trickier. Life should malleable and progressive; working from idea to idea permits that. Beliefs anchor you to certain points and limit growth; new ideas can't generate. Life becomes stagnant." - Chris Rock in Dogma

I like old George Bernard Shaw quotes:

"A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing."
"A man never tells you anything until you contradict him."
"All great truths begin as blasphemies."
"If all economists were laid end to end, they would not reach a conclusion."
"Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it."
And of course, "The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one."

How do you titilate an ocelot?  Oscilate its tits a lot.

Ok, not really a quote but funny nonetheless.

I'm rather partial to war quotes for some reason. My favourite is:

Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without your accordion. (Gen. H. Norman Schwartzkopf)

"C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas la guerre. (It is magnificent, but it is not war.)"

 ;)

Hmmm, I know quite a few quotes but as usual I van't remember any of them when I should. Bugger. Well, there is this one:

I just posted this on my Facebook.

The sky calls to us. If we do not destroy ourselves, we will one day venture to the stars. A still more glorious dawn awaits, not a sunrise, but a galaxy rise. A morning filled with four hundred billion suns! The rising of the milky way!

A sample of my favorites:

Quote from: "Neil DeGrasse Tyson""Recognize that the very molecules that make up your body, the atoms that construct the molecules, are traceable to the crucibles that were once the centers of high mass stars that exploded their chemically rich guts into the galaxy, enriching pristine gas clouds with the chemistry of life. So that we are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically and to the rest of the universe atomically. That’s kinda cool! That makes me smile and I actually feel quite large at the end of that. It’s not that we are better than the universe, we are part of the universe. We are in the universe and the universe is in us."
Quote from: "Rounders"If, after the first twenty minutes, you don't know who the sucker at the table is, it's you.
Quote from: "Mitch Hedberg"An escalator can never break--it can only become stairs. You would never see an "Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order" sign, just "Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience. We apologize for the fact that you can still get up there."
Quote from: "Henry Ford"It is not the employer who pays the wages. Employers only handle the money. It is the customer who pays the wages.
Quote from: "E.M. Forster"I am sure that if the mothers of various nations could meet, there would be no more wars.
Quote from: "Mitch Hedberg"A fly was very close to being called a "land," cause that's what they do half the time.
Quote from: "Neil DeGrasse Tyson""The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it."
Quote from: "Brian Greene"I have long thought that anyone who does not regularly - or ever - gaze up and see the wonder and glory of a dark night sky filled with countless stars loses a sense of their fundamental connectedness to the universe.

And my recently changed signature, of course:

Ah, I remember Mitch Hedberg, he was hilarious. The world lost a great comedian when he died.

While not as relevant any more, this is a still a goodie:

Quote from: "Chris Rock"You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America's Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn'€™t want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named Bush, Dick, and Colon.

My fave quotes are in my signature. That said, I don't really like quoting people unless it is relevant as research material. Just quoting a smart, popular and/or powerful person does not give an argument any extra weight in my book, and so I prefer words of my own to those of others.

John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich addressing John Wilkes, wit, rake, British MP and member of the Hellfire Club

"Sir! You will die either on the gallows or of the pox!"

Wilkes; "That depends my lord on whether I embrace your principles or your mistress"

He is not only dull himself, but is the cause of dullness in others.
Samuel Foote, British playwright.

Like one that on a lonesome road
Doth walk in fear and dread,
And having once turned round walks on,
And turns no more his head;
Because he knows a frightful fiend
Doth close behind him tread.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge. THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
Robert Frost

Fight Crime. Shoot Back.

I know men and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between Him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creation of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded His empire upon love; and at this hour millions of men would die for Him. â€"Napoleon

Socrates taught for 40 years, Plato for 50, Aristotle for 40, and Jesus for only 3. Yet the influence of Christ's 3-year ministry infinitely transcends the impact left by the combined 130 years of teaching from these men who were among the greatest philosophers of all antiquity. â€"Unknown

A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic â€" on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg â€" or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.--C.S. Lewis

Now don't get offended. Here are some from a favorite author of mine.

“To suppose that the eye with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light, and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree.” --Charles Darwin

"I often had to run very quickly to be on time, and from being a fleet runner was generally successful; but when in doubt I prayed earnestly to God to help me, and I well remember that I attributed my success to the prayers and not to my quick running, and marvelled how generally I was aided."  --Charles Darwin

"I believe in Providence and I believe Providence to be just. Therefore I believe that Providence always rewards the strong, the industrious, and the upright." - Adolf Hitler

"The Public is an old woman. Let her maunder and mumble." - Thomas
Carlyle

"Whoever will be free must make himself free. Freedom is no fairy gift to fall into a man's lap. What is freedom? To have the will to be responsible for one's self. " - Max Stirner
I once used this quote in a presentation at my Christian high school.

From Renzo Novatore's Toward the Creative Nothing:
QuoteMy Opinions

God
The creation of a sick fantasy. Inhabitant of senile and impotent brains. Companion and comforter of rancid spirits born to slavery. A pill for constipated minds. Marxism for the faint of heart. Humanity An abstract word with a negative connotation, long on power, short on truth. An obscene mask painted on the mean face of a shrewd vulgarian for the purpose of dominating the multitude of sentimentalist idiots and imbeciles.

Country
Penal servitude for the semi-intelligent, a cowshed of imbecility. A Circe who transforms her adoring fans into dogs and pigs. A prostitute for the master, a pimp of the foreigner. Child-eater, parent-slanderer and scoffer at heroes.

Family
The denial of love, life and liberty.

Socialism
Discipline, discipline; obedience, obedience; slavery and ignorance, pregnant with authority. A bourgeois body grotesquely fattened by a vulgar
christian creature. A medley of fetishism, sectarianism and cowardice.

Organizations, Legislative Bodies and Unions
Churches for the powerless. Pawnshops for the stingy and weak. Many join to live parasitically off the backs of their card â€" carrying simpleton colleagues. Some join to become spies. Others, the most sincere, join to end up in jail from where they can observe the mean â€" spiritedness of all the rest.

Solidarity The macabre altar used by capable comedians of all sort to display their priestly talent for reciting masses. The beneficiaries pay nothing less
than 100% humiliation.

Friendship
Fortunate are those who have drunk from its chalice without having their souls offended or poisoned. If one such person exists, I urge them to send me their photograph. I’m sure to look upon the face of an idiot.

Love
Deception of the flesh and damage to the spirit. Disease of the soul, atrophy of the brain, weakening of the heart, corruption of the senses, poetic lies from which one gets ferociously inebriated two or three times a day in order to consume this precious but stupid life more quickly. And yet I would prefer to die of love. It’s the only swindler, after Judas, that can kill with a kiss.

Man
A filthy paste of servitude, tyranny, fetishism, fear, vanity â€" and ignorance. The greatest offence one can commit against an ass is to call it a man.

Woman
The most brutal of enslaved beasts. The greatest victim shuffling on earth. And, after man, the most responsible for her problems. I’d be curious to know what goes through her mind when I kiss her.

I don't know if there's some subtle irony going on here but here's what Dawkins had to say about that.

QuoteCreationists gleefully quote this sentence again and again. Needless to say, they never quote what follows. Darwin's fulsomely free confession turned out to be a rhetorical device. He was drawing his opponents towards him so that his punch, when it came, struck the harder. The punch, of course, was Darwin's effortless explanation of exactly how the eye evolved by gradual degrees.

I don't believe Hitler was 'insane' at all. He was an encyclopedic rube who had just experienced what looked to be a deliberate attempt to exterminate the German 'race' through any means, fair or foul, on pretexts obviously absurd and cooked up; who was seeing the same thing happen again. American liberals may laugh at his strange ideas; but they've probably killed less people than the ideas of 'democracy' and 'human rights'.

Feanor Thunder quoted Charles Darwin..............

The above is an egregious quote-mine exercise.

This is what Darwin wrote;

http://carm.org/charles-darwin-on-the-human-eye (http://carm.org/charles-darwin-on-the-human-eye)   [CARM = Christian Apologetics Research Ministries]

The Quote: From the Origin of Species, CHAPTER VI - DIFFICULTIES OF THE THEORY
"Organs of extreme Perfection and Complication. To suppose that the eye with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light, and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree. When it was first said that the sun stood still and the world turned round, the common sense of mankind declared the doctrine false; but the old saying of Vox populi, vox Dei, as every philosopher knows, cannot be trusted in science. Reason tells me, that if numerous gradations from a simple and imperfect eye to one complex and perfect can be shown to exist, each grade being useful to its possessor, as is certainly the case; if further, the eye ever varies and the variations be inherited, as is likewise certainly the case and if such variations should be useful to any animal under changing conditions of life, then the difficulty of believing that a perfect and complex eye could be formed by natural selection, though insuperable by our imagination, should not be considered as subversive of the theory. How a nerve comes to be sensitive to light, hardly concerns us more than how life itself originated; but I may remark that, as some of the lowest organisms, in which nerves cannot be detected, are capable of perceiving light, it does not seem impossible that certain sensitive elements in their sarcode should become aggregated and developed into nerves, endowed with this special sensibility."
_________________________________

Darwin continues with three more pages describing a sequence of plausible intermediate stages between eyelessness and human eyes, giving examples from existing organisms to show that the intermediates are viable.

It is recommended that FT consult <http://www.answersingenesis.org/get-answers/topic/arguments-we-dont-use> before quoting further.

It is also quite ironical to note a brief passage from the AiG site; Answers in Genesis is not willing to distort evidence or resort to bad logic to defend the Bible.

You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.--C.S. Lewis

That is just drivel, is it an attempt at irony or is "Non-Religious" the new label for theists on atheist forums?  I have gotten used to treating "free thinker" with scepticism.  Is Jesus so factual and beyond doubt that Christianity has gone beyond religion?

I agree with Robert M. Price and Frank Zindler; it is likely that no such person such as 'Jesus' ever existed to begin with; and was in fact invented later than the religious strains which eventually came together and were retroactively attributed to him.

To save having to quote you all:
Thanks for the info on the quote by Darwin, hadn't really researched it extensivly, I usually give people the benefit of the doubt. But I'm working on that. Regardless, I don't see how evolution could have made the human eye out of chance, but I'll save that until I reach my 50 posts!
Religious Drivel? Well, you gotta understand that when I quoted Napolean and Lewis, they were assuming that Jesus did exist, human or God or both. Whether you believe he existed or not...whatever! Don't really care about your belief on the matter, makes no difference to me! Peace and Love is my battle cry!

Non Religious- Weeeelll, you gotta understand my definition. Religion, in my personal opinion, is man trying to get to God. I ain't trying to do that. Everything in my nature is trying to get away from God! So I'm not religious. You might have a different defination me.

Relax fellas! No need to get worked up! I posted 'em 'cause I thought 'em interesting quotes! Now I don't have them on bumper stickers, just saying that they're interesting!

Peace Out!

Keep headin' down your road, you'll hit either your destination or a cliff eventually!

No hard feelings!

Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world.  I know because I've done it thousands of times.

I never let my schooling interfere with my education.

A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way.

All generalizations are false, including this one.

All right, then, I'll go to Hell.

But who prays for Satan?  Who, in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most?

I don't give a damn for a man who can only spell a word one way.

My favorite Mark Twain quotes.

I've got a whole folder dedicated to awesome quotes, so I'll unload some here.

Awesome Quote 6: (By Frasier Crane)
"I saw my fellow psychiatrists on the ski slopes today. I've never seen so many Freudians slip."

Awesome Quote 7: (By The Ghost Host from The Haunted Mansion)
"Your cadaverous pallor betrays an aura of foreboding, almost as if you sense a disquieting metamorphosis."

Awesome Quote 8: (By Caligula)
"I have existed from the morning of the world and I shall exist until the last star falls from the heavens. Although I have taken the form of Gaius Caligula, I am all men as I am no man and so I am a god."

Awesome Quote 11: (By V)
"But on this most auspicious of nights, permit me then, in lieu of the more commonplace soubriquet to suggest the character of this dramatis persona. Voila! In view a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage no mere veneer of vanity is a vestige of the vox populi now vacant vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta held as a votive not in vain for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V."

Awesome Quote 27: (By George Carlin)
"If someone asked me to swear on the bible, 'Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, & nothin' but the truth so help you god,' I'd say yeah! I'll tell you about as much truth as the people who wrote that fuckin' bible, how'd you like that?"

Awesome Quote 31: (By Bill Hicks)
"These two guys came up to me after the show and said, 'Hey, buddy, c'mere! Mr. Comedian...Hey, buddy we're Christian and we didn't like what you said,' and I said 'Then forgive me.'"

Awesome Quote 33: (Again By Bill Hicks)
"Strangers, people I don't even know come up to me out of the blue and go, 'What's wrong?' '...Nothin...' 'Well, it takes more energy to frown than it does to smile.' 'Yeah, you know it takes more energy to point that out than it does to leave me alone?'"

And my last one is right under this comment. Ain't that the point of the quote feature?

"A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything." - Friedrich Nietzsche

"He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." - Friedrich Nietzsche

"Learning does not make one learned: there are those who have knowledge and those who have understanding. The first requires memory and the second philosophy" - Alexander Dumas (The Count of Monte Cristo)

"The pure present is an ungraspable advance of the past devouring the future. In truth, all sensation is already memory." - Haruki Murakami (Kafka on the shore)

"The best soldier does not attack. The superior fighter succeeds without violence. The greatest conqueror wins without struggle. The most successful manager leads without dictating. This is intelligent non aggressiveness. This is called the mastery of men." - Lao Tse

"To know that you do not know is the best. To pretend to know when you do not know is a disease." - Lao Tse

"Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them-that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like." - Lao Tse

"Love is passion, obsession, someone you can't live without. I say, fall head over heels. Find someone you can love like crazy and who will love you the same way back. How do you find him? Well, you forget your head, and you listen to your heart. And I'm not hearing any heart. Cause the truth is, honey, there's no sense living your life without this. To make the journey and not fall deeply in love, well, you haven't lived a life at all. But you have to try, cause if you haven't tried, you haven't lived." - Anthony Hopkins in Meet Joe Black

"Oh, really? When I buy a new book, I read the last page first. That way, in case I die before I finish, I know how it ends. That, my friend, is a dark side." - Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally
"May you live long enough to shit yourself."
"Your Facebook profile makes you sound like a rapist."
"I don't let my porn define me".
"This is an occasion for genuinely tiny knickers." - Rennee Zellwegger in Bridget Jones's Diary
"He is so old that his blood type was discontinued."
"No man ever believes that the Bible means what it says: He is always convinced that it says what he means."
"Why should we take advice on sex from the Pope? If he knows anything about it, he shouldn't!"

I would paste the entire Sun Tzu's "Art Of War" here, since it's all so relevant (dark personal times) but I didn't want to bore anyone to death so here are a few good snippets:

QuoteVictorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.

It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperilled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperilled in every single battle.

The general who wins the battle makes many calculations in his temple before the battle is fought. The general who loses makes but few calculations beforehand.

The quality of decision is like the well-timed swoop of a falcon which enables it to strike and destroy its victim.

The general who advances without coveting fame and retreats without fearing disgrace, whose only thought is to protect his country and do good service for his sovereign, is the jewel of the kingdom.

All men can see these tactics whereby I conquer, but what none can see is the strategy out of which victory is evolved.

When torrential water tosses boulders, it is because of its momentum. When the strike of a hawk breaks the body of its prey, it is because of timing.

And therefore those skilled in war bring the enemy to the field of battle and are not brought there by him.

Subtle and insubstantial, the expert leaves no trace; divinely mysterious, he is inaudible. Thus he is master of his enemy's fate.

The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, and then waited for an opportunity of defeating the enemy.

Now the reason the wise general conquers the enemy whenever they move and their achievements surpass those of ordinary men is foreknowledge.

Know your enemy.

The opportunity to secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

Thus it is that in war the victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory.

To see victory only when it is within the ken of the common herd is not the acme of excellence.

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.

You have to believe in yourself.

A few are a bit redundant, but some might find that absolutly necessary.  ;D

He didn't make it up. In the King James Bible, Exodus 15.3, it says that "The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name."

But it depends what version you're reading. Other versions amend certain bits here and there to sound more cosily metaphorical. I've got a copy of the New Century Version in my hands, for example (a version aimed at younger readers) and it says instead that "the LORD is a warrior: the LORD is his name," which is a lot more open to interpretation. Could just mean that he's very determined or something!

But then you've got to take the context into account. And the overriding message of the whole chapter, all that stuff about obliterating the enemy and so forth, pretty much amounts to the same thing even in the NCV: God's into his war.

Sorry Cooper. I just realised I might have stolen your thunder a bit there, which wasn't my intention.

Exodus carries an overbearingly pro-war theme anyway, even if we skip 15.3. So, even if you'd been mistaken about that specific quote, your point would still have stood up.

PI saying that he couldn't find a particular phrase about God liking war, in a whole book that might as well be titled "God Likes War", seemed somewhat disingenuous to me. Not that his heart wasn't in the right place, of course, but there we are; I couldn't help sticking my ore in. I'll bite my lip next time.

Ahh, see, my Bible is a New American Bible. I do have a KJV kickin' around here somewhere... Oh well. It's a good point.

But look at it this way, God is not a warrior who looks to slaughter those that are innocent, He fights those that threaten His people. "If God is for us, then who can be against us?" Romans 8:31 Well, Satan is "against us". And Satan can control people, and if these said people are controlled by Satan, then God will combat Satan, in turn combating these said people.

"'Woe to the shepherds who are scattering the sheep of my pasture!' declares the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel concerning the shepherds who are tending My people: 'You have scattered My flock and driven them away, and have not attended to them; behold, I am about to attend to you for the evil of your deeds," declares the lord." All by Niccolo Machiavelli:

God is not willing to do everything, and thus take away our free will and that share of glory which belongs to us.

Hence it comes about that all armed Prophets have been victorious, and all unarmed Prophets have been destroyed.

I'm not interested in preserving the status quo; I want to overthrow it.

It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both.

It is double pleasure to deceive the deceiver.

It is not titles that honor men, but men that honor titles.

Politics have no relation to morals.

The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him.

The more sand has escaped from the hourglass of our life, the clearer we should see through it.
Niccolo Machiavelli

The one who adapts his policy to the times prospers, and likewise that the one whose policy clashes with the demands of the times does not.

The wish to acquire more is admittedly a very natural and common thing; and when men succeed in this they are always praised rather than condemned. But when they lack the ability to do so and yet want to acquire more at all costs, they deserve condemnation for their mistakes.

There are three kinds of intelligence: one kind understands things for itself, the other appreciates what others can understand, the third understands neither for itself nor through others. This first kind is excellent, the second good, and the third kind useless.

When you disarm the people, you commence to offend them and show that you distrust them either through cowardice or lack of confidence, and both of these opinions generate hatred.

Whosoever desires constant success must change his conduct with the times.

And don't forget he'll fleece them every year before he slaughters them.

Not so bad, he gives them a security blanket in return...

But ponder this,
Throughout the bible, how many people did Yhwh kill and how many people did Satan kill?

Oh we shall!! haha.

Would you like me to answer this now, or wait another 8 posts?

If you keep it simple e.g. God killed X, Satan killed Y then you wouldn't have a problem but if you go indepth to explain or defend the deaths or try and interpret you maybe should wait till a couple more posts

Some quotes on freedom, which has never left my mind for the past three going on four years:

***

I know but one freedom and that is the freedom of the mind.

- Antoine de Saint-Exupery

In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved.

- Franklin D. Roosevelt

Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.

- Abraham Lincoln

Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can't ride you unless your back is bent.

- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.

- Martin Luther King, Jr.

The path we have chosen for the present is full of hazards, as all paths are. The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission.

- John F. Kennedy

There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires.

- Nelson Mandela

Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free.

- Jim Morrison

Well, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight? They never mention that part to us, do they?

- George Carlin

V: Hello, Evey.
Evey Hammond: You. It was you.
V:  Yeah.
Evey Hammond: That wasn't real... Is Gordon - ?
V: I'm sorry, but Mr. Deitrich's dead. I thought they'd arrest him, but when they found a Koran in his house, they had him executed.
Evey Hammond: Oh God...
V: Fortunately, I got to you before they did.
Evey Hammond: You got to me? You did this to me? You cut my hair? You tortured me? You tortured me! Why?
V: You said you wanted to live without fear. I wish there'd been an easier way, but there wasn't.
V: I know you may never forgive me... but nor will you understand how hard it was for me to do what I did. Every day I saw in myself everything you see in me now. Every day I wanted to end it, but each time you refused to give in, I knew I couldn't.
Evey Hammond: You're *sick*! You're *evil*!
V: *You* could've ended it, Evey, you could've given in. But you didn't. Why?
Evey Hammond: Leave me alone! I *hate* you!
V: That's it! See, at first I thought it was hate, too. Hate was all I knew, it built my world, it imprisoned me, taught me how to eat, how to drink, how to breathe. I thought I'd die with all my hate in my veins. But then something happened. It happened to me... just as it happened to you.
Evey Hammond: Shut up! I *don't* want to hear your lies!
V: Your own father said that artists use lies to tell the truth. Yes, I created a lie. But because you believed it, you found something true about yourself.
Evey Hammond: No.
V: What was true in that cell is just as true now. What you felt in there has nothing to do with me.
Evey Hammond: I can't feel *anything* anymore!
V: Don't run from it, Evey. You've been running all your life.
Evey Hammond: I can't... can't breathe. Asthma... asthma! When I was little...
V: Listen to me, Evey. This may be the most important moment of your life. Commit to it.
V: They took your parents from you. They took your brother from you.
V: They put you in a cell and took everything they could take except your life. And you believed that was all there was, didn't you? The only thing you had left was your life, but it wasn't, was it?
V: You found something else. In that cell you found something that mattered more to you than life. It was when they threatened to kill you unless you gave them what they wanted... you told them you'd rather die. You faced your death, Evey. You were calm. You were still.
V: Try to feel now what you felt then.

To quote a very famous and outspoken atheist:

"The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unplesant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomeniacle, sado-masochistic, capriciously malevolent bully."

I think it's true tho -- just because we don't have evidence for something yet doesn't mean we won't discover it someday.  Just because theists can make use of it doesn't changes that, and besides, they're still on the hook to provide evidence for any claims they make.  Possible future evidence for claims they make about their god today are no more meaningful than those I make for the invisible dragon in my garage.  And there will be evidence some day for my dragon, I know it in my heart!

A chance to get three Hitchens avatars in a row!

If we're going to have Hanlon's Razor here, we need Richard Bos's corollary to Hanlon's Razor --

Stupidity maintained long enough is a form of malice.

Went on a random quote hunting after watching some YouTube vids and stumbled on these:

There is a set of religious, or rather moral, writings which teach that virtue is the certain road to happiness, and vice to misery in this world. A very wholesome and comfortable doctrine, and to which we have but one objection, namely, that it is not true.

"There are no atheists in foxholes" isn't an argument against atheism, it's an argument against foxholes.  ~James Morrow

Everyone's a pacifist between wars.  It's like being a vegetarian between meals.  ~Colman McCarthy

Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War.  He is the only one that gathers his brethren about him and goes forth in cold blood and calm pulse to exterminate his kind.  He is the only animal that for sordid wages will march out... and help to slaughter strangers of his own species who have done him no harm and with whom he has no quarrel.... And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for "the universal brotherhood of man" - with his mouth.  ~Mark Twain

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.  This world in arms is not spending money alone.  It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.  This is not a way of life at all in any true sense.  Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.  ~Dwight D. Quote
If I were to construct a God I would furnish Him with some way and qualities and characteristics which the Present lacks. He would not stoop to ask for any man's compliments, praises, flatteries; and He would be far above exacting them. I would have Him as self-respecting as the better sort of man in these regards.
He would not be a merchant, a trader. He would not buy these things. He would not sell, or offer to sell, temporary benefits of the joys of eternity for the product called worship. I would have Him as dignified as the better sort of man in this regard.
He would value no love but the love born of kindnesses conferred; not that born of benevolences contracted for. Repentance in a man's heart for a wrong done would cancel and annul that sin; and no verbal prayers for forgiveness be required or desired or expected of that man.
In His Bible there would be no Unforgiveable Sin. He would recognize in Himself the Author and Inventor of Sin and Author and Inventor of the Vehicle and Appliances for its commission; and would place the whole responsibility where it would of right belong: upon Himself, the only Sinner.
He would not be a jealous God--a trait so small that even men despise it in each other.
He would not boast.
He would keep private Hs admirations of Himself; He would regard self-praise as unbecoming the dignity of his position.
He would not have the spirit of vengeance in His heart. Then it would not issue from His lips.
There would not be any hell--except the one we live in from the cradle to the grave.
There would not be any heaven--the kind described in the world's Bibles.
He would spend some of His eternities in trying to forgive Himself for making man unhappy when he could have made him happy with the same effort and he would spend the rest of them in studying astronomy.
- Mark Twain

Bump. "Favourite" is too specific for those quotes you will soon forget.

Was looking for a quotation about time changing things, did not found what I wanted but found these:

Quote"Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving."
― Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky

Quote"Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself."
― Leo Tolstoy

Quote"Things change. And friends leave. Life doesn't stop for anybody."
― Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower

[That last was a philosophy one had to develop in the armed forces, bit like "The king is dead, long live the king" - "My old friend has gone, welcome my new friend."]
