50 yearz ago today, the ohio national guard shot four young americans to death at kent state university. not demonstrating, as i recall. juzt walking to classez or staning around within rifle range.

others were shot and bayoneted, but not killed.

a nasty businezz all around.

the numbers of deaths is insignificant by modern standards, but tbe aftermath was politically earthshaking in america.8

This is probably relevant, although written earlier.

The political fallout wasn't about the numbers, it was the powers and people involved. Armed representatives of the government fired on unarmed civilian protestors and killed some of them. If that were to happen in the US today there would be serious fallout as well, and rightly so.

yes.

i knew a fellow who ws a student there t the time. it was tense on all sides.  but there was no reason to bring in armed troops to an open university. it was totally brainless on the part of the governor.

hermes, this one was directly relevant

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about that one.

My nephew, Blaise, was in the troops that were involved in the travesty at Kent state. He was a decent kid who came away with what we now call PTSD.  It haunted him for a long time after that event.

my friend told me that getting caught alone in an alley if you were a guardsman might have been worth your life.

it was a messy thing. apparently there were outsiders hell bent on creating  a pop ublic incident, and they got one.
