Just a friendly reminder to all of you Heathen Atheists here at HAF that Wednesday, is "Ash Wednesday", and the beginning of Lent, and the six week's of penitence before Easter...so get to church and get your Ashes or else!!!

Truth be told I almost forgot about this myself, but fortunately Sister Agatha (Remember her?!) sent me an email reminding me to get my  ass to church this Wednesday.

She's doing well, as are Father's Flannigan and O'hara, as well as little Billy.

Here's her picture (Now you know why I keep in touch with her) 8)

If we don't, will Sister Agatha, Father's Flannigan and O'hara, as well as little Billy come back to haunt us? :notsure:

All these figments of "Sister" Agatha's imagination are just too much to handle. :lol:

Since tomorrow is Ash-Wednesday, today is known as Fat-Tuesday, which means here in the Detroit area it is officially "Paczki Day"!

This is the polish word for a donut. (About 425 calories and 25 grams of fat in each) :puke:

Anyways, today my man and I are celebrating our 19 year anniversary. For a minute there, I didn't think we were gonna make it.  :argue:
But we did.

I never understood the reason for the ashes on the forehead although I confess I've never researched it either. Does the ash represent Christ's cremation? I didn't think that was scriptural though.

PB sure knows a lot about Catholic rituals. Methinks all those nuns have had a considerable influence on his life.  ;D :sidesmile:

It could be related to the "sackcloth and ashes" that was used in biblical fasts. Lent is a sort of fast, in that you deprive yourself of something.  I think having no heat and water down here is probably fast enough - sort of a forced Lent.  Not being Catholic, I don't feel the need.  But I know those who do.

The lessons learned during 12 years of Catholic school are hard to forget, plus I was actually an altar boy for about 4 years, so I was like a priest in training 8)...Being an altar boy was kinda fun though, I mean it beat sitting in the pews during mass, and I was often picked to serve during weddings and funerals. Weddings were cool, because we often got tips, and funerals were okay because we often got pulled out of school if they were during the week, and sometime there was food.

Once a year during the summer Father Kucyk would take us all down to Tiger Stadium to see the Tigers play baseball. Bleacher seats, so not too fancy, but he let us eat a ton of hot-dogs and get tons of soda-pop!!

The other cool thing was we would sample the wine back in the sacristy as we we're getting everything ready for mass.

Wine and the communion wafers, along with valuable stuff were kept in a large, walk-in safe in the sacristy. Before mass it was our job to make sure everything was set on the alter for mass, which included lighting all of the candles, filling the water and oil containers, making sure there was plenty of wafers in the altar tabernacle, and also wine on the altar.

Some priests just took little sips of wine, and one who had us mix just a little of the wine with water, but there were a couple that instructed us to fill their chalice full (Grin)

One time before mass we were sipping wine from the safe, and next to the safe was a small sink that the priest would use to wash their hands before mass. Old Monsignor Weir kept a glass on the sink that he would use to gargle with before mass. We had filled his glass with some wine, and were taking turns sipping from it when we heard father coming down the hallway from the Rectory. One of the guys dumped the wine out of the glass, and then we all dispersed from the area, but he forgot to rinse the glass out.

Father came in and then we help him put on his vestments, he then checked the altar really quick, and then he took a swig of water from his glass, gurgled the contents and spit it out into the sink.

We then grabbed the cross, candles, and bible we would carry in procession at the start of mass and lined up behind Old Father Weir.

He started heading out into the church, when all of a sudden he stopped, turned around and said, "Next time you boys sample the wine, make sure you rinse my glass out after".

He then turned around and headed out into the church. Us altar boys were looking at each other with horrified looks, I mean you have to understand. Monsignor Weir was one tough son of a bitch, he was a Navy Veteran from WWII who saw combat, and he also was a boxer for a while before deciding to become a priest.
He had a temper and wasn't afraid to smack you on the side of the head if you fucked up....I remember all during mass thinking we were dead meat, but he never brought it up again, and after mass acted like nothing had happened.

After that he earned my respect some...of course we never, ever used his glass again (We did keep sampling the wine, I mean let's face it we were young idiots)

1) If you don't have a cross in your apartment or house, buy a simple one and put it in your bedroom.
2) Think about a habit that has kept you from being whom God is calling you to be. Consciously give up that habit for Lent.
3) Make a commitment to fast from insensitive, cruel comments about others. So, no gossiping or going down the Twitter rabbit hole,
4) Read the Works of Mercy as Jesus describes them in Matthew 25:31-46. Then put this teaching into practice and choose an act of service you can perform throughout Lent.
5) Create your own Friday fish fry! It's not the healthiest thing in the world, but a fun Catholic tradition to help you abstain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent.

7) Have lots and lots and lots more sex. 8)
