Juneteenth is June 19. That was the day that the word of the Emancipation Proclamation reached African Americans in Texas, 2 1/2 years after Lincoln issued it. Texas blacks celebrate it yearly, and now it has become a national event. Perhaps it will become a national holiday.
...and the chump wants to hold a campaign rally there on that day. Inciting to riot? Or just tone deaf?
i think hes simply too self absorbed to see how it wiuld look to anybody elze.
tulsa is famous for the 1921 mob killings. its no secret to anybody from oklahoma.
but trump not only cant see tbe issue, he has surrounded himself with toadiez and yes men who wont contradict him even when he doez something stupid.
id be curious as to which of them dared to tell him a tulsa rally on juneteenth waz a bad image.
I've just saw on CNN news that Trump rescheduled the Tulsa rally "Out of respect for Juneteenth".
Some unusually sound judgement from our very own "stable genius".
I was wondering who finally told him what Juneteenth was, and why it mattered.

Apparently he wasn't aware (https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2020/06/14/trump-unaware-significance-juneteenth-tim-scott/3187532001/) until someone told him, but I don't know who informed him.

Somebody with some sense. He doesn't sound like the type of person to look things up for himself or to care about the day until someone reminded him there is an election coming up.

^Hear! Hear! I'd never heard about the day either (being a bloody ignorant foreigner), so I had to look it up as well.

I had never heard of it until it showed up on my calendar. I had to look it up.
being a whitey, i haven't known about it all my life, but certainly the last few years its been something i paid attention to.
along with thai pusam and deepavali
In Georgia, it's probably not celebrated much. This is a "Good Ol' Boys" state. Atlanta on the other hand may celebrate it this year since all the protests took place.
Randy I believe that Atlanta has a larger percentage of African American citizens that most other sizable cities. They will surely celebrate Juneteenth and Kwanza too.
when i lived in california the grocery store adbertized a martin luther king day special . . .
on fried chicken.
i kid you not. at least it wasnt watermelon.

I think they offered watermelon ice cream for dessert.
Since it started in Texas, I've known about it for as long as I can remember. Blacks usually celebrated it by having gatherings in public parks. Never was a violent thing, that I can think of. Then a few years ago it started gaining momentum nationally. Americans appropriate reasons to celebrate, like with St. Paddy and Cinco. Any excuse to party. We just need a special booze to go along with it, like we do with Guinness/Jamison and Corona/Tequila. Very stereotypical, so I'm proposing Malt Liquor and Bourbon. Tank's watermelon wine also hits the mark. Please take this in the spirit of drunken revelry for which it is intended. Any excuse to party.
i cant ztand jamison. something changed in my chemistry a few yearz ago and now it tastez sweet. gin is the zame way.
so i celebrate with bushmills instead
Yeah, I'd never heard of Junteenth, either, growing up in a little suburb in southern California. That fried chicken and watermelon thing is one old joke. We ate the same thing when I was growing up. My mother grew up on a farm in rural Minnesota and never saw a person of color until she went to Minneapolis at age 14.
Maybe next month, on the 4th of July I can celebrate with moonshine mixed with Kool-Aid or whiskey mixed with Tang.
I will celebrate with Scotch combined with ice cubes.

Yuck! Ice! :P
I try to stay away from Scotch. It really does me in. If I drink it, I still feel it the next day. I don't experience this with either cognac or corn squeezin's. Hmmm...maybe a bottle of cognac is in order... :)
I've still got two bottles of Rye Whiskey at home, so I'll be fine

Good idea. Generally, in Texas, the 4th is a beer-drinking day - it's hot and muggy, so a cold Bud Lite Lime goes down well, But some chilled moonshine would also be appropriate, while wearing a wife-beater and watching baseball. Stereotyping is the name of the game in these situations.
Newsflash!!! I have been educated. An African American co-worker informed me that there is already an official booze for Juneteenth. It is Champagne! Last night there were fireworks here on Juneteenth Eve, and my friend told me that everyone had their Champagne ready. The level of Champagne is up to the individual. So now you know.
If I could, I'd simply have a pint of Guinness in front of the TV. :)
I admit I didn't learn about Juneteenth until I'd left my rural childhood behind and went to find, well, whatever (not my fortune, I knew that much) in the big city as a teenager. As for drinks, I've heard that strawberry soda (https://chestertownspy.org/2020/06/12/food-friday-planning-for-juneteenth/) is traditional.
I guess one could mix a wee bit of alcohol with the strawberry soda and have the best of both worlds.

Have also learned that they eat red foods, as a tradition from Africa. So pour a bit of Grenadine into the Champagne to get Red Champagne.

What I also wonder is who picked that day and location in the first place? Somebody I'm sure was dog whistling away. My guess is Steve Miller, that guy who looks like a constipated weasel -- he has the background for it.

Strawberry Champagne (https://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/fruit-recipes/strawberry-champagne/)
I'm not a fan of strawberries, unless served without pesticides. Can't say the same for tomatoes, though. I would do anything for a big...red...juicy tomato. :yum:
