Another thing heard on BBC World Servuce but no link located so far.
It seems that a button badge has been developed to fight women getting harassed on buses etc. It has a built in transmitter that alerts any other button wearers nearby. Seems like there are at least a couple of layers of protection here; the one they mentioned, that nearby wearers may get involved or call for help but, also, that merely wearing the button indicates that this person is willing to make a fuss, defend herself in some way.
It does rely on lots of women taking the idea up, I hope it gets lots of promotion.
I am repulsed by the button idea. No not the buttons themselves or the intended use of the clever device, but angry that there would be any need for such a thing. What the hell has our world come to?

It is that need that also makes me angry. However I would guess that this problem has existed for as long as there has been sex. Now, though, we have more things like mass, crowded, transport and more women willing to make their voices known to media who are willing to give them a platform. In terms of serious attacks, gang rapes, severe beatings and murder, I often wonder what makes certain cultures more prone to this problem, is it sheer numbers, "traditional" attitudes towards women, strong sexual mores, poor sexual/social education/example, reduced chance of marriage or a combination of these?
People are just plain stupid!

Recently we had a highly publicised case here in Brazil in which a guy would repeatedly ejaculate on female passengers, which caused quite an uproar because he, being a repeat offender, would be taken in by police only to be released to do it again the same week. And again the week after that...
I don't think that incarceration is an adequate solution for such a creep for a variety of reasons, but maybe they should have chemically castrated him, since he has serious issues with impulse control. Ejaculation on victims in public might be just a part of the picture. It could be a small step for a person like that to actually start raping women, if he hasn't already.

Perhaps. I don't know what became of him, it was all over the news for a time, then people lost interest it seems and was spoken of no more. Maybe he was finally incarcerated and stopped giving people what to talk about. Tried to put his penis on a fellow inmate and got what he had coming.
