Not everyone aspires to being a bitter solitary curmudgeon.
:o What manner of blasphemously heretical blasphemous heresy is this? What other aspirations ARE there?  :o

Don't they?  That is so sad.

That image missed out loads of good 'uns (still like it though), but due to that picture I have now come to the conclusion that porn does degrade women.
This needs some more clarification. I do not see where that last conclusion came from

I think he means that Ayn Rand was a porn star.

No, no, no... wait, not Ayn Rand, Sasha Grey.

Hahaha yeah, that's the reason. Not that I have anything against the person its just that regardless of not working in the porn industry any more and all the things she has done professionally outside of having sex for a living that is still the perception I have of her.

Miley  Cyrus is an easy target. Which is down to the people who presented it.

Well I could suggest Miley Cyrus is an easy target for those who need something easily disdained to help maintain their stance of superiority.

The pic has all manner of people great and less so.
Asshole Theists will say civilisation is impossible without god.
We need only to point to the picture and ask what are you without us?

I really do not need to know my disbelief in God is shared by Ricky Gervais.I can think for myself. Seems to me a strange pitch to the independently-minded. Perhaps , ironically, a reflection of the contemporary bent for celebrity- worship? Placing Miley Cyrus on the same page as Einstein did make me laugh though.

I don't think it's got as much to do with celebrity as with the reassurance that "you're not the only one", which plenty of people, even independent-minded atheists,  can find comforting.  Someone's being well known is simply the only way we happen to know or can confirm this otherwise minor fact about them.  A little bit surprised not to see both Mythbusters guys up there.

Maybe there are some people who had previously thought that they were alone in the world in their atheism who will draw support from this. Others may think that given the vast number of eminent scientists and  iconic celebs  to pick from within the timeframe covered by the poster- if this is the best they can come up, with I really am in a tiny minority. But essentially, I do feel a certain incongruity between promoting atheism , which  ideally entails rejecting received wisdoms and unthinking acceptance of authority, on the back  of celeb endorsements.

To which they will doubtlessly retort-  God made the atheists too. What Miley  Cyrus's counter to that might be, I can only speculate.

Maybe we need to start paying for atheist product placement. How much do you think it would cost to get a Darwin fish into the Hobbit movie?
"We've thought of life by analogy with a journey, with pilgrimage which had a serious purpose at the end, and the THING was to get to that end; success, or whatever it is, or maybe heaven after you're dead. But, we missed the point the whole way along; It was a musical thing and you were supposed to sing, or dance, while the music was being played.

Fair point, but BooksCatsEtc captures why I like this. Think of the constant need to proclaim your "faith" in the public sphere by some celebrities. This is a nice counter to show there are plenty of public people who will proudly proclaim their atheism, and that can only help people who are on the fence about it, showing they're not alone.

I do wish there was at least one professional athlete on this list, though. That culture is one of the worst in terms of needing to constantly talk about "faith", "thanking god" for their win, blah blah blah.

Yeah Lance Armstrong would have been the perfect example.
