What's on The Asmo's mind is... Misery.

He has a vicious cold, for which He blames the start of school year. Somehow, them children managed to once again sneak past His defences and infect Him with something deadly-contagious. >:(

...Coworkers with children. It had to be them. :rant1:

My wife and I are suffering for nearly two months now from a nasty form of bronchitis. There are a lot of cases of lung diseases in the area where we live.

the autumn land speed races were cancelled. not enough people signed up. so i cancelled my motel reservations, and now i am halfway through the nine days off that i set aside from work.

so far its been highly constructive. i sleep late, go to bed early, ride my motorcyle in the heat 80-90F-- and do jack shit.

my number two son is here for a week, as he was headed to maine with us, but we arent going.so were trying to figure out why the transfer case on his samurai switches him in and out in time with his right turn signals. obviously  a wear point in the wiring harness, but i dunno where.

and th enumber three son persuaded me to prop up th ecenter of the house with a jack. th estructure is about 100 years old, and the center of the ground floor has settled about two inches. lots of presumption on the beam strength of a central floor joist that spans some 15 feet from th efoundation blocks to a 12-inch cut-off tree trunk jammed in that holds up th emiddle of the house.

except they didnt put a footing under the tree trunk and so its been settling into the ground and now has a two-inch gap between th etop and floor joist.

anyway, we bought an eight foot screw-jack and stuck it on the concrete in front of the old coal furnace, and raised the middle of the house about an inch. maybe two. so now my face isnt level with my wife's when i stand in the low spot.

thats all thats been on my mind. perhaps ill take th enorton out later, if i put in the new battery

That's really and truly a different world. We may as well live in different eras.

Well wooden houses for one thing. They are as rare as hens teeth this side if the pond. And almost the frontier nature of the do it yourself fixes.

id forgotten. here in the states wood has always been a traditional first choice, in places where there are trees. out west it was often soddys or adobe. the place im living in now was built about a hundred years ago to replace an earlier structure that nobody is certain about. this one has foundation blocks made of the old inferior glazed cerammics. they work well for about a hundred years. the older places have sandstone foundations, cut blocks about 18 by 18 inches, and maybe 30 inches long. the exterior steps into our cellar are made of those, so there was something older around the property that got cannibalized.

but this isnt really frontier.  this house is just a bit old. but there is unique wildlife around here
