Mexico elects Claudia Sheinbaum as first woman president

QuoteClaudia Sheinbaum has been elected as Mexico's first woman president in an historic landslide win.

Mexico's official electoral authority said preliminary results showed the 61-year-old former mayor of Mexico City winning between 58% and 60% of the vote in Sunday's election.

That gives her a lead of about 30 percentage points over her main rival, businesswoman Xóchitl Gálvez.

Ms Sheinbaum will replace her mentor, outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on 1 October.

It'll be interesting to she how she gets on.

Claudia Sheinbaum.

Smart cookie.

It's heartbreaking to have to compare this woman to a man like Trump :(

I know next to nothing about Mexican politics, but over here, I have observed that it does not matter much whether it's a man or a woman, a Jew or a Catholic leading the government.

Over 'ere, the prime minister tends to be whoever leads the largest party in a governing coalition. Sometimes though, a small party may get the office in exchange for coalition support.

If she's competent and/or has a good cabinet around her and/or enough popular support, she will do just fine.

She is a leader of a nation with some issues. Such-like comes with the territory, I suspect.

Heck, pop singers and ""influencers"" get death threats, some more serious and less imaginary than others. Someone who actually has the power to make a tangible impact in real people's real lives and, perhaps more importantly in such considerations, their wallets... To put it this way, if some would kill over a few hundred bucks, what would some others do over a few hundred million?

That's not to mention various ideological nutters, creepy stalkers and what else have you. I have certain respect for people who willingly stick their neck out and expose it to that world knowingly and without whinging. Being a public figure... Yeah. It has its dark sides, ranging from the rate of drug addiction to... Well, the quality of said public.

Given the gang culture prevalent in Mexico she'd better wear body armour to bed!

One can only hope that she will not opt for The Other(tm) Solution - avoid messing with their money.

That's rather cryptic for me this time in the morning :)

There are roughly two types of politicians in countries with strong criminal gangs - those who do their best to oppose them, and those who do their best to look like they oppose them, while at the same time trying not to cause undue disruptions to their revenue streams.

I suspect she would be the former. What do you think?
