Lies aren't necessarily bad. Like, when grandma tells you you're handsome.

Everything I like is good.
Everything I don't like, is bad.

If I don't like it, and you do, you are the one who is wrong.
And being wrong is bad.

It is a matter of perspective. A lie that serves someone is good for them.

A lie used to prevent damage is acceptable. A lie to deceive is not acceptable.

yet all lies decieve.

every lie is an assertion that someone elae does not deserve to be treated equally with respect to knowledge of the truth.

fhe jew in the closet is the clearest example of the dilemma that i know of.

...But then, one may argue that everyone does not, in fact, deserve to be treated equally with respect to knowledge of every truth.

To put it this way, do I somehow deserve equality to yourself in the knowledge of the truth about how often you have sex with your wife?

I think the only "natural equality" should be that under the law. For the rest - competition is in itself a form of discrimination (That of "cans" from "cannots" or "the best" from "the rest")

youre not distinguishing "right to know" from "right to be told the truth."

there is a difference. i can quite happily answer your question by saying i will not tell you.

that is very different from deception. lies always disrespect and devalue the person lied to. they say clearly "i am better able to process and more deserving of factual knowledge than you."

in some traditions this is explicit. espionage is one. disinformation in wartime is another.

what i am talking about are the physicians who wont tell me that i am dying, because they know better than me what knowledge i should hold.

as another example, i have never lied to my children. ever. about anything. if they have ever had a question thst merited an answer, they got the truth, in as much detail as their age allowed them to process.

when i explained human reproduction the responses were hilarious.

Quite so. But if my wife asks me some questions I value my life too much to give a 100% honest answer on occasion.
