Nicole Nichols, Lt. Uhuru of Star Trek, passed away at the age of 89.  She was the first black person to have a featured role in a big time series. Pretty woman, with talent, trailblazer.

RIP Lieutenant.

Aww.  :(
RIP Lieutenant.

She was an inspiration to many and a fine actress as well. Farewell, Ms Nichols/Nyota Uhura.  :blue tear:

Disclaimer: I'm not trying to make a political statement here - only a personal one, from the perspective of this one fan of the older setting.

I suppose the whole race/sex/whatever thing is important to the American public. To me, it never mattered whether she was the first black this or black in the time of that - she portrayed a character in the Star Trek universe at a time when said universe was deserving of my fandom, and she certainly contributed to that. Even though my entry to the universe was decades later with DS9, I have watched the original series and the movie and have overall fond memories of them, quite in spite of them being quite long in the proverbial tooth at the time.

...I wonder how many of the cast from today's STD or Picard will be remembered as fondly upon their passing. Low single digits, I suspect. The beaten, old adage, "they don't make 'em like they used to" comes to mind.

That, however, is a discussion better suited for a different place. This grateful fan bids you farewell, Commander Uhura.

It is indeed a great loss. I loved her role in Star Trek and her involvement at NASA. But like the Asmo already said, outside the USA race/sex/whatever isn't that important. In the Netherlands we had gay and black actors since the very beginning of Dutch television.

We are socially imbecilic in the USA compared to northern Europe. But sometimes we are more enlightened than Saudi Arabia, and that makes the news. The situation is not good here. We need a Captain Kirk but we are stuck with fat slobbering narcissists like Trump and teetering old men like Biden. And I don't really see anyone on the horizon who could take the mantel and lead us out of this fog. Beam me up, Scottie!
