to me, all modern art is problematic. i look at so much of it and say, what bullshit, whether it's painting , or sculpture, or music, whatever.

then i'll notice something small that makes me stop and say whoa-- there's major stuff going on in all of that that i simply don't understand.

its like reading t. s. eliot's stinking poetry. i don't think i understand it, but i can't stay away.

so i try to look and see whether there's more there than i thjought.

When I was younger I thought so much of it was pretentious bullshit, but that was mostly because of the art snobs who believed they held the golden keys to unlocking art, rather than the art itself: "The artist wanted us to think this and this with this brush stroke here and that and that with this one there..." Unless the artist themselves says it, it's BS to me, and even then I might see something else going on there that was never intended.

So what's the purpose? Modern or abstract art is different than say, a hyperrealistic painting. It takes a lot of talent and practical skill to paint a picture that looks like a photograph. It may not require that level of technical expertise to produce a "modern art" painting, but perhaps that isn't even the point.

A lot of it I don't like, but a lot of it looks cool and aesthetically pleasing. I think it's the kind of thing that you love or you hate, there is no in between.   :P

notice tho that a hyperrealistic painting that looks like a painting doesn't convey anything that a photograph cpouldn't do.

look at this

i love this. i don't know why.

I've never understood why modern art is so popular. It doesn't seem to take any talent to make it and can sell for thousands after the "artist" is dead.

I appreciate, even love, a lot of modern art and music. Some of it cannot be appreciated "cold"; a knowledge of what motivated the artist and the history that led up to the production of a certain work is required. Much of Marcel Duchamp's work is a good example.

Perhaps I've not been looking at the right art. I'll look around some. I'm willing to change my mind if need be.

I wasn't proselytizing, but if you are interested in getting into "modern" visual art, it would be good to start with the Impressionists, who were ridiculed at the beginning. A warning: it is a rewarding, but potentially harrowing journey!

theyre amazing

espwcially if you look at what was normal in painting before they showed up

everybody was trying to paint what they mentally concieved was thwre. then the impressionists started painting what they actually saw, which was very different.

what you see is light and color. thats not at all what you know or think to be present. people werent painting what they saw bur rather what they imagined

Oh, I didn't think for a minute you were proselytizing. You've been helping me to see things differently. I haven't looked at it yet.

I'm glad to hear that you are willing to give things a chance. I think that most serious modern artists aren't charlatans and have something worthwhile to say. I may not like some of their work, and even hate some of it, but I think that on the whole they are not out to con the public. Susan Sontag said an interesting thing about modern art. She stated that it can be as difficult to understand as modern physics, so it's no wonder that it leaves non-specialists bewildered.
