A great piece for the tympany player. I knew a tympanist. The double bass players have it bad transporting their instruments--it's at least double the effort for a tympanist. He was a genuine character, extremely well read and with a deep knowledge of classical music. Onward . . .

Prisms with light beams may well be banned in the US by the MAGA crowd of dumbasses.

I have an optical bench and a variety of lenses, prisms, and light sources that I play with sometimes.

My response was to the piece by Ligeti called Lux Aeterna, which means Eternal Light. I thought the prism and the lines were an appropriate association.

OK. Reason I asked is because the Fraunhofer lines represent absorption frequencies in a radiating body. We see them in our sun's spectrum because certain frequencies are absorbed. This isn't our sun's absorption spectrum, though.

Entirely. Seeing as the inspiration for the thread is free association--pretty much any association is appropriate! Assuming good will of course.

My curiosity sent me in search of an answer. My impression is that the image was created by the European Southern Observatory to accompany science talks for the general public. A image search got me to this version which tells us that the absorption lines are for hydrogen, sodium, and calcium.  I used tineye--the google image search came up empty for whatever reason.

Cool! Thanks! Those lines do look to be in about the correct places. As for intent, I hope nothing I said was taken as derogatory or something. That's never my intent. Or, if it was, it would be obvious. :smilenod:
