Dave:
Yoda would probably make a good UN ambassador for reason and rationality.

And because they do everything backwards?

In several of languages the verb at the end of the clause or sentence is. Japanese a good example of this is. Many members understand this would.

The story there was of an interpreter at the UN, who interpretting a speech by the Japanese ambassador to English was. The ambassador well known for his long and complex sentences was and the interpretter exasperated was waiting for the verb the sentence to qualify. In the end heard he was to mutter, "Get to the bloody verb man!"

Notice you will that the until the verb added is meaningless the sentence is.

Another one of your typos, I thought I was reading.

Quiz game for heathens.

Recently three economists--Oded Netzer and Alain Lemaire both of Columbia Univ and Michael Herzenstein of Univ of Delaware--looked for ways to predict the likelihood of whether a borrower would pay back a loan.  The scholars utilized data from PROSPER, a peer to peer lending site.  Potential borrowers would write a brief description of why they need a loan and why they are likely to make good on it. Potential lenders then decide whether or not to make the loan.  Overall about 13% of the borrowers defaulted the loan.

It turns out that the language that potential borrowers use is a strong predictor of their probability of repaying the loan.  It is an important indicator even if you control for other relevant information that the potential borrowers use, even including credit ratings.

Listed below are ten words or phrases the researchers found that are commonly used when applying for the loan.  Five of them negatively correlate with paying back the loan. In other words, five of them tend to be used by people that you could trust, five by people you can not trust.

Can you guess which ones belong in the separate risk categories.???????

God
promise
debt free
minimum payment
lower interest rate
will pay
graduate
thank you
after tax
hospital

Just for fun take a run at these words or phrases.  I will be back later...in a couple of days, to see if anyone has made the same estimates that the researchers found.  Teaser.....name the most serious risk word or phrase

xSilverPhinx

Fun question!

My guess:

Higher-risk words: God, minimum payment, lower interest rate, hospital, graduate

Lower-risk words: promise, debt free, after tax, will pay, thank you

Most serious risk phrase: minimum payment

Higher-risk words: God, hospital, promise, will pay, thank you

Lower-risk words: debt free, after tax, minimum payment, lower interest rate, graduate

Here's my guess:

Higher-risk words: God, hospital, promise, will pay, graduate.

Lower-risk words: debt free, after tax, minimum payment, lower interest rate, thank you.

This isn't easy.  :)

Higher risk: God, promise, debt-free, graduate, hospital (highest risk, God)

Lower risk: minimum payment, lower interest rate, will pay, thank you, after tax

I'm interested to know why the three of you listed 'minimum payment' as lower risk? :notsure:

We don't know the exact context these people used the words in, but in my mind, if someone is talking about the smallest amount they must pay in each bill they might be dealing with financial difficulty.

Good question SIlver. On the one hand those words, minimum payment, might suggest that the borrower is less than able to repay reliably.  On the other hand it also suggests that the borrower has some degree of financial sophistication and is therefore  a better risk.

Hermes cheated. He listed all of them correctly. Bruno came pretty close but he included the words "thank you" in the positive column.

Least risk words are: ...debt free, after tax, lower interest rate, minimum payment, graduate

Higher risk clues are:... God, will pay, hospital,  promise, thank you

The word all of you have guessed as a negative one is: God.  The default rate for borrowers who used that word were 2.2 times more likely to fail to repay the loan.

I lifted that from the newly available book titled; Everybody Lies. The author, Seth Stephens-Davidowitz is a PHD economist and he is consumed with data analysis exercises. His book is an easy read, has some surprising information, and has some humorous parts.

The author provides evidence that we all tell lies, that there are some common knowledge things that we intuitively know to be true that are provably false, that there are not just a mountain of available data but whole mountain ranges of data that can be mined by one who is committed to do so.

Google Trends
is a resource that reveals how frequently a word or phrase has been searched from different locations and times. Google AdWords tell how frequently each search was made for a specific subject or product.  Pornhub can be mined to learn what the viewers are actually into rather than what they tell you what captures their attention. Amazon can also be mined as can a plethora of other sources that we do not usually consider fountains of information.

The difference in data gleaned from sites where the individual is anonymous and the near useless data  from personal polls and ones like....say Facebook is striking. In the poll or Facebook case the identity of the user is known.  Therefore one must put his opinions in line with those of the ones that he/she considers worthy of friending or impressing in some way. You can say or inquire about whatever you please, no matter how ugly or controversial when your identity is hidden from normal view.

General Social Survey describes American behaviors. ...A hell of a lot more of us are racists than we like to believe. One usually thinks of republicans in Alabama and Mississippi to be the prime supporters of racism, which they are, but it can be clearly shown that racism is equally rampant in Upstate New York, Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, Industrial Michigan, and rural Illinois.  It is not too much of a stretch to link that reality to the success of D.J. Trump in those areas.  During Obamas administration there were far more google entries that  contained the words "nigger president" than "black president". I reckon that a lot of we Americans need to have an honest chat with ourselves about that subject. Surely we can agree that outfits like Stormfront are a blight on our society.

If you have any further interest, go to the authors website at Sethsd.com

I did not mean to get into a mini rant here. I was only attempting to have you show an interest in a book that is a different kind of read and a book that may cause some gnashing of teeth.

Essie Mae

I've just bought this book on a friend's recommendation and have only just started it. I always assume that I'm not racist, but I do admit to being culturist, (if there is such a word). When I know someone follows a religion, I always assume they are not living on the real world. (I'm trying both to be truthful but also choosing my words carefully because it is not my intention to insult anyone here). Part of this assumption is that I was irrational when I was a believer.

That's interesting, I got a lot of them wrong!

While 'God' being a higher risk word is fairly obvious, I'm surprised that words such as 'promise' and 'will pay' are as well.

:no idea: Sorry, I don't get how spreading payments over longer periods of time means a degree of financial sophistication, as you pay more interest overall. I don't know how high the average interest rate is in the US, but around here you pay around 9 to 13% per month. Is money that expensive over there as well? :notsure:

Bad Hermes!
