I became a Christian around March 1998, when it became obvious to me that I couldn't avoid the fact that the Bible was an accurate historical record of an amazing series of events, and that a serious and lasting response was demanded. There is a mass of compelling evidence to show that the Bible is an accurate historical document, which points to and records the life of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

I feel this is an experience which you may find reflected within yourselves, so if you would like to know more about Christianity, or if anything I've said seems wrong or strange, feel free to mail me. There is also an excellent summary of  the message of Christianity here: {link removed by admin}

That's an interesting coincidence. I stopped being a Christian only a few months after you became one. I'd been raised in a Christian home, taught religion by both of my parents and in church, and was s Christian as they come. Fortunately for me, but unfortunately for my faith, I realized that I wasn't being skeptical about what was in the Bible and what I had been taught in church. I reread the Bible with a more scrutinizing eye and realized that, actually, much of what's in the Bible is highly inaccurate, but worse still, it has numerous internal contradictions and teaches terrible lessons. I realized that my sense of morality and my understanding of the way the world works had to come from better sources if I was going to be a good and honest person.

But it got worse after I took a step back and realized what religion is: religion is a cage people put themselves into out of fear. We all have, to one degree or another, a wish to have an authority in our lives, a father figure, but for many of us that drives us to suspend disbelief and surrender ourselves to false and dangerous teachings. In our fear, we turn in desperation to anything that can offer us a feeling of safety, even if it's a false security. This doesn't really alleviate our fears, though, it only prevents us from facing them.

Are you afraid of death? So are many people. I admit that it causes me a bit of concern, but in the face of this concern I realize that living my life to its fullest is the best way to deal with the reality of a finite life. Are you afraid of not being good? That's perfectly fine, in fact it's the first step to developing your subjective sense of right and wrong based on innate interpersonal behavioral rules and a conscious social contract. Are you afraid of being alone? You're not alone. The world is covered in people, and there's a good chance there's life out in the universe that's waiting to meet us. Are you afraid of where we come from? It's really an amazing story. At the beginning a singularity of nearly infinite mass, energy and time, expanded with great speed. Matter/energy led to stars which lead to planets which eventually led to people. We are the culmination of billions of years of physics and chemistry and biology, in fact you can trace a line from every atom in your body, back through the evolution of life on earth, back through exploding stars, all the way back to the singularity. The natural explanation is so much more poetic than the supernatural explanation, isn't it? Are you afraid of hell? Don't be. There's no more reason to think there's a Hell thank to think there's a Valhalla or Hades or Underworld. It's just a way to keep the faithful from acting and thinking independently.

If you have any questions whatsoever, please feel free to ask.

Maybe you missed this.  Just so you can't say, "Nobody told me--"

Quote
From Forum Rules:

NO PREACHING:  While everyone is welcome to discuss their views in a civil manner, this forum is not a podium for those that only wish to preach.  This rule applies to atheists and theists alike. Preaching means stating your beliefs without providing evidence.  If directly asked what you believe you may answer but it would then become against the rules if you were to then refuse to back up your views objectively when honestly challenged.  This means that if you want to use your religious text to prove your deity, for instance, you will also need to be prepared to prove that your religious text is an objective source of evidence.

I for one do not welcome your strutting in and "witnessing" to me. If you wish to engage in dialog rather than preach, that's a different kettle of fish, but the Jesus fish in the kettle you present smell like they've been sitting in the sun for a long time.  I recognize that smell, and don't need any more of it.  Thank you.

Dammit, Medusa. Well I will say this; you tried to warn me. I don't know how I had a total brainfart and didn't catch what you were trying to say. Other posts suggest I wasn't alone in that, but that doesn't stop the burning in my frontal lobe. Thanks for trying, anyway. Here, lemme help:

This yahoo's not a Christian. The link is a naked old man wearing cat ears. The guy's a troll.

I didn't click on the link, and I don't regret it in the slightest.  My response probably wouldn't have been affected much if I had: There are Christians who would find it amusing to post a link to the described image, so I will reserve judgment regarding the question of the OP's religious affiliation, if any.
