Seems that I got stuck thinking too narrow this time, though I did think of a horse-shoe magnet (got rods, discs, spheres, blocks etc).

That would have made an attractive photo. You need a strong magnet to pick up a horse-shoe.

Another good selection.  I've been to 1 and it's a good shot with no tourists. I'm guessing they stayed over night and got up before the tide went down?  I know where 5 is and by deduction who took it and I think they did 2 and 15 as well. I think 17 is in Chicago?

Haha who put all the pictures of that naked girl lol
Presumably the person who took them?

That would have been a good visual pun.

Got one with a 10kg hold, but I keep that at arm's length in case it turns off my cardiac implant!.

So if that's true, it narrows it down to Mags or Fernanda. I don't see Mags posing with a cross and I don't see that many white guys being in their area.

It is a mystery

Arturo, your comment is wrong on so many levels.
Leave me, and all the white guys who live in "my area," out of it. Please.

So am I wrong for addressing the 4 pictures of a naked girl that just stands out from the rest of the "attractions"? Can I not just say things anymore?

I don't even really think it's any of you. I was just going along with what Tank said.

The pictures of a naked girl stand out from the rest of the attractions, just in your realm.

Can I not just say things anymore?
Yes, you can. So can I. So can everybody else.

I don't even really think it's any of you. I was just going along with what Tank said.
:headscratch:

Have you found the answer to this question?
I wonder...do I come off as less intelligent or unaware of myself?

Arturo, you say you can see it being one of my oddly placed jokes, but I'm still not getting it. Maybe my sense of humour has left me today and all I'm left with is the question, 'why did Arturo single out me and Mags as possible contributors of those photos? Does he think it's one of us in those photos? If not, does he think that one of us took the photos?

Just to make things clear, I don't think there's anything wrong with those photos, I'm not an offended prude, but I do think that there are some upsetting underlying preconceptions on your part about women in general from Latin America, and I get the strong impression that you've included me and Mags into your sweeping generalisation. This isn't the first time this has happened either.

Maybe I'm just making a mountain out of a molehill here.

(Just as a P.S., many of the 'white men' who descend from the hordes of German, Polish, Portuguese, Italian and Spanish who migrated to Brazil in recent history would be offended by your assumption.)

I know it's not usual to disclose who submitted a picture but in this case not knowing is causing unwanted and unnecessary friction. The 4 pictures with women in them are mine. The man is the boyfriend of the young lady. 3 of the pictures were taken as part of an unpaid for amateur photo shoot where I was learning the art of erotic photography. The red head lady was a random shot at my daughters wedding. So Mags and XSPx have nothing to do with them whatsoever.

**Ahem**
I must admit that the Camaro is a beauty.
The Power Stop high-temperature red powder-coated performance brake calipers add a certain je-ne-sais-quoi to it.

~That's all I wanted to say.

Please continue.

They are nice, the red calipers (so that's what that red thing in the wheel is? :P ). :smilenod:

I still insist though that it could benefit from a good pair of googly eyes. With long eyelashes. :tellmemore:

"Tor" is possibly more common in England, as in Glastonbury Tor, meaning a high peak or crag. The Gaelic "torre" refers to a "bulging hill". But they both come from Latin. This is definitely a "tor"!

And a beautiful one.

Well those are some excellent entries, and I wish I would have been able to submit some of my own, but September has been such a busy month for me...can't believe it will be October in a day or so.

I had to cast one of my votes for Tank's lovely photograph of the redheaded woman because I have this thing for Gingers ::) she's quite stunning actually.

Have to say this was a very interesting thread to read, weird how even in a simply photography thread things can take such diverse paths you know?

Which leads me to a benefit I see from online communities such as this. Often time most of us in life will say or remark about something in a way that may be construed as rude or hurtful. Most times people we hurt with our comments may choose to ignore the remark, and nod in quick agreement or affirmation, and then walk away. With us not ever being the wiser that our comment or remark was hurtful, so we go on in ignorance possibly repeating the same thing over and over again.

Online though we are often able to confront comments we find rude or distasteful, and it can be said this is a good learning tool for those of us who may have posted the remark because it gives us an inside look into how our thoughts and words can sometimes be hurtful to others even if that wasn't our intention. (Sometimes jokes go to far)

Sure intent isn't magical, but a good recourse is to simply acknowledge what we said was wrong, apologize and move on...doubling down can just make matters worth.

Anyway that's my take on the matter.

Lark deserves a mention--two of the photos she submitted were only one vote behind hermes2015's winning entry.  :)

The famous lounge chair and footstool designed by one of my great heroes, Charles Eames. I love this chair so much, which is why I included it. An edge of my bookshelf can be seen in the background. He designed the chair as a birthday gift for his movie director friend Billy Wilder in 1956. It is one of quite a few Eames pieces I've collected over the years. One of my disappointments was that Eames died a few months before I was due to meet him at his design office in Venice, California.

I see that you have some of my favorite books, Hermes.  i have long held that you can tell many things about a man by looking at his bookshelf.

I see: Wrinkles In Time by George Smoot among others that I like particularly well. ..............In the US we have a brand of better quality Jams and Preserves whose brand name is Smuckers. Their slogan is; "with a name like Smuckers, it has to be good".  Same goes for a guy named Smoot, and he is indeed good at what he does.

Hermes, I love browsing a person's bookshelves. I echo Icarus that you can tell so much about a person by what books they keep. I think I like you.  :thumbsup2: ....But I already knew that!
Anyway, I loved all the pictures. I'm gonna submit something next time!

I agree 100% that one can learn a lot about someone just by examining the titles on their bookshelves. Do you also find it strange that there are no books to be seen in some homes?

That fsux bookshelf wall paper looks all the worse because the "repeats" are not staggered - they are all on the same level.

I would go for complete mirroring to make my little room look bigger if it were not for the multiple images of myself everywhere I look!

That's funny that you mentioned earthquakes.... It's the first thing I think of when I see anything that can be knocked off over a bed, on a fireplace mantle, on a shelf.....
Growing up in Alaska, we had our fair share of earthquakes, and although I live in a pretty solid place now, I can't escape that paranoia when decorating.

I have actually "thinned out" my books, some on art and photography went to the local secondary school library and those on the Anglo-Saxons to a self employed peripetatic history teacher friend who wants to make them her specialist subject. Better they be read and used than just gather dust.

The books have spread out to other surfaces as well, many from Geoff's 2h book shop, which I visit on most trips to town. Think there are 24 plus dictionaries and similar there now, going back to the 1890's, interesting to see how the use and meaning of English has changed since then.

The books are all hermetically sealed in supermarket plastic bags because humidity can get quite high (the shelf is near a door which leads outside) and so as not to collect dust. The books I'm currently reading are in my closet, in my room, also in plastic bags.

I once heard of a doctor in Malaydia who kept his most important books in the fridge, along with his drugs!  Careful though, super dryness can make paper brittle.

I had the surreal experience in the mid-70s of having a former student if Dirac's enroll as a student in a 30-lecture organic chemistry course I was presenting. He wanted to do the course to keep his mind active. This charming gentleman was then about 80 and I was less than half his age. He was very humble and contributed by asking some excellent questions, so I really enjoyed having him in my class.  I loved hearing his many interesting anecdotes about Dirac.
Isn't life strange?

Books do smell, you're better off without them as long as civilisation doesn't collapse.
I've got a tablet my daughter bought years ago and abandoned, it's probably worth $5.
I've got lots of stuff I've dubiously procured from the net but you can't judge me, it's a cultural thing.

The books I've read end up in a box, before they end up in a box, they go onto the lower shelves. The top shelf is where my book queue is. My favorite books get their own shelf as well.

My bookcases.  The big one and its annex are the books I decided to keep after reading.  The small is "to be reads".  Until recently I had a habit of thinning my books out, but I've realized I just end up re-buying most of them at some point so I've accepted that I'll just have to start finding more wall space once these bookcases get full.

Au contraire!
1. Make a sealable, well insulated cabinet.
2. Place in that cabinet a small panel which is below  freezing, plus a thermostat that prevents the air awsy ftom that panel ftom falling below 3 or 4 degrees.
3. Close the cabinet and wait for the internal temperature to stop falling.
4. Now place in the cabinet a piece of damp paper.
5. Since the air away from the above panel is above freezing the water in the paper will slowly evaporate.
6. That water vapour will condense on the coldest part of the system - that freezing panel - where it will be held as ice.
5. Thus the paper slowly dries out.

We had an enviromental chamber at work that could be controlled between minus 40 and plus 90 degrees. If the temperature was set to +60 ish and the fridge unit turned on as well an orange, placed in the stream of heated air, would dry out completrly in 24 hours. The heat evaporated the moisture, the fridge part condensed and trapped it it. This is the basis of "freeze drying" for food for preservation (without actually cooking it or spending day's worth of slow heat energy or risk contamination/bacterial growth in fairly slow sun drying . . .) etc.

Try leaving sonething like a bell pepper in the fridge for a couple of weeks, it will gradually wrinkle as it dries out.

Yes, you need to pay for the energy to run the fridge. In principle it is the same as the dehudifier I use to dry my laundry in the winter (I have no room for a tumble drier, no yard and it also dries out the bathroom comlletely and reduces mould growth) and what archives use to protect their papers.

You have excellent eyesight. Some of those are first editions, signed by the authors. My submission was just a part of the whole bookshelf, but I plan to post a pic of the entire one in a day or so. Who would have thought that simple little photo of some books would cause so much response?

Nothing "simple" about people's choice of books, Hermes!

Ben Jonson said, "Language best shows a man, speak that I might know you." Could say something similar about book choice.

Oh fantastic! And inspiring! YES, I love it. Not only books, but serpentine creature sculpture... beautiful!
Except.... um.... do they have an English section? If not, I'd have to find The Picture Book section.  ;D

They do have an English section, although it's a section that has been shrinking over the years.  :sad sigh: Nowadays, if you want to read a book in English you would have to order it online, then wait about a month for it to arrive (except when they have the book in stock elsewhere in Brazil) and, added to that, sometimes you purchase a book, wait the full month and get an email saying that they couldn't locate a copy to import.

:Gaah:

It's a difficult life, the life of someone who depends on megastores to import books they want to read in their original language.
