Rio cops are greeting tourists with "Welcome to hell" signs. This may be the worst Olympics in history.

I saw that. I suspect Brazil might just end up regretting hosting the Olympics. But I sincerely hope not.

If only for the sake of the competitors and fans?

Brazil has been heading for self-destruction for some time - and, once, it had such promise and hopes. Once we had the BRiC nations, now more like the SKRIC, S Korea might take their place.

It seems most people here don't give a rat's ass about the Olympics but the government keeps pushing for it to happen, probably to save face.

Cops haven't been paid a full salary in months, small wonder they're acting out like that.

Why haven't the cops been paid, anyway? I knew Brazil was having issues, but not as bad as, say, Venezuela. Or so I thought.

I think that, leaving out the federal police, it's up to each state to pay and the states just don't have the money. Civil and especially  military police jobs are seen to be lower and lower middle class jobs, and like other such jobs they are more vulnerable to cuts. Civil servant jobs that pay better are a little safer for the time being.

DAYUM, girl! You're good!

Ask just about any Brazilian and that's what they'll tell you: these Olympics are going to be a disaster.

The Olympics are a world wide extravaganza. I am rooting for Brazil to pull it off with a fair degree of competence.  The Olympics are one of the few world events that bring us together as congenial and celibritory members of human race.

I agree with you, Icarus.

I fully agree.

What a pity about all the ballyhoo, commercialism and non-sporting-one-up-manship.

I have yet to get round to watching the opening ceremonies in full but it seems that in general, it was pulled off without any apocalyptic disasters.  :whew: The acting president of Brazil, Michel Temer, got booed but that was to be expected, I think even he expected that.

The Olympic cauldron (starts at 3:15) was particularly impressive. 8)

I wish you well with it, I really do.
I have an antipathy for ceremonies though.
Fireworks don't really work on screen for me.
Spectators of sport isn't a group I belong to.
But I wish you well with it, really I do.
Take my advice, don't listen to me.
