Post by: DeterminedJuliet on August 20, 2011, 10:24:23 PM
EDIT: Early parts of the thread lost in the Great Crash of 2015.

So, my husband and I have become a little obsessed with Dr.Who as of late. Any other Whovians around?
If so, who is your favourite Doctor? Favourite villain? Coolest companion?

Personally, I haven't seen much of the early Dr.Who, but I've watched all of the most recent series. I have some serious love for Dave Tennant.

Being an old fart I can remember all the different Dr's. I think if I had to choose one Dr it would be Christopher Eccleston, but only by a littl bit. I do like the current guy Matt Smith and  David Tennant was excellent. In my opinion Eccleston could do the Dr's dark side just a little better than Tennnant. Of the 'Old School' it would be Tom Baker.

I have hardly missed an episode, ever, but then SiFi if my favourite genre because if it is done well it explores how humanity could possibly survive the future.

I have accidentally become hooked on the show. I was watching it on tv cause there was another show afterwards. I love the tenth doctor, David Tennant. For me, THAT'S the doctor lol.
My villain... ehm... unoriginal but I like the Daleks (eventhough  the way the yell exterminate all the time is annoying)
My favorite of his companions was Donna Noble. I absolutely hated the way they "ended" her. For me, removing the memories from a character is worse than killing him off.

The companions have been very variable over the years. In part that has been the fault of the producers and script writers who in some cases have simply viewed the companions as a plot foil, somebody who the Dr can talk to to explain what is going on. Russell T Davies, who brought the Dr back to life went a little too far the other way IMO. Everybody wondered (wanted?) to know what would happen if the Dr fell for one of his companions, and Davies took the story line there. However the nature of the programme and the Dr meant that it would have to end badly. There was also a period when the companioins were there just to get the dads to watch a scantily clad lady run around.

^ haha, I love that last picture. "Oh, you know, I'm just hanging out here in the nude with my Dalek friend."

As for villains, I thought "the Silence" was really interesting - a bad guy that no one could remember. My husband is currently re-watching the whole series, so I suspect we're going to have quite a few chats about the Cybermen and Dalek's backstories when he's done.  ;D

My wife was born and rasied in London and as a kid she was terrified of the Cybermen as they were often shown wandering around where she lived!

My personal favourite baddies are the Darleks, although the Yetis (only appeared in one series) came a close second.

I adore Dr. Who, and I've been pleasantly surprised by Matt Smith's Doctor. Particularly, I enjoyed Vincent and The Doctor, A Christmas Carol, and The Doctor's Wife.

I got started in 2005, but I've been meaning to go back and watch the old ones, but that's a lot of time.

She was quite the babe. But then Dr Who's companions have always been unnecessarily good-looking  ;D

Worst mistake the Dr ever made? When he had the chance to get rid of the Daleks and didn't; they went on to destroy all the Time Lords, except the Dr.

I grew up with Peter Davidson as the doctor, and I've always wanted to be him.  Not to play him in the tv show, but to be Dr Who in real life.
I have a friend of a friend who runs a sci fi bar here, and he tells me that Peter Davidson is a twat.

Ooooh, Doctor Who, of which I am a long time fan.  I was good to go in the years between the old and new TV show, with the two ongoing series of novels that continued his adventures.

Right now, a major favorite is Ecclestone.  He accomplished a Doctor that was so edgy, intense and dangerous a Doctor, so very compelling; yet still clearly identifiable as the Doctor, while at the same time challenging old conventions of what we thought the Doctor was supposed to be.

I've gone back and forth so many times on companions, it's really hard to say.  A couple from the novels are very interesting characters.

I can't think of a favorite villain off the top of my head, but here is a monster that probably doesn't get mentioned too much: I like the Fendahl.  A gestalt creature, with 12 (Lovecraftian) sub-creature components, and a human/humanoid core.  The product of an evolutionary cul-de-sac, from the original Fifth Planet of our solar system, it's feeds on death (it is death, how do you kill death itself?).  It was so notorious it became a part of Time Lord mythology; the Time Lords were spooked enough by it that they time-looped the planet out of existence.  This creature is one of the most fascinating concepts I love from the old show.

Another great enemy is from the novels, where the Doctor intersects with a Time War (of a different shape than we see in the TV show) where the Enemy of the Timelords is specifically not the Daleks, yet other than that remains a complete mystery (and is still a matter of speculation today).  It's the mystery, the guessing game, that makes these unknown adversaries compelling.

What did everyone think about "The God Complex" episode? It seemed like the most overtly "atheist" episode that I've seen yet. In particular, I thought it was interesting how the creature used faith against people, and how they showed how closely fear is tied to faith.

It was quite a good scary. I wonder what was behind the Dr's door though? And is Amy gone, or is that a time-line glitch that will be sorted out later? The episode was quite overtly atheistic, but I think that Dr Who is inherently atheistic anyway. A time lord lives a long time and travels the universe in time well outside their own life times. There are (were) lots of time lords. Yet they never mention God in the 'creator' sense and if any race could discover God it would be the time lords.

Good point!

So: We're coming up on the 50th anniversary.  Here's my spoiler-free predictions.

1) Rory and Amy have run their course.  As they haven't even played a major role in the last specials, I think that they'll be eased out in some manner.

2)  Expect guest appearances from previous Doctors and companions.

3) 50/50 on the Eleventh turning into the Twelfth in conjunction with the anniversary.

I didn't get Rory at first, either.  However, his character arc has been amazing, and he's turned into one of the most likeable and sympathetic characters.  I especially enjoy the fact that he's totally willing to see The Doctor for who he is, and call him out on it when necessary.

I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with resurrecting threads.  Directing a question to a years old post and expecting an answer from the author is probably being a bit optimistic.  In some places people become annoyed when a new thread is started when a similar one exists in the archives.  Reuse and recycle are good.

Exactly. I'd rather a resurrection that a new thread but only by a small margin. I'd much rather people started a new thread than not just in case an old one on the subject existed.

Lalla Ward used to be married to Tom Baker too.   8)

I started watching when I was about 16 years old (I'm 45 now).  The public television station used to show it late on Saturday nights.  I loved them.  Tom Baker was my first and favorite Doctor.

I ended up going to a number of Doctor Who conventions and got to meet many of the Doctors and companions. (I used to dress up at Romana I, albiet a 17 year old Romana, LOL).  It was great fun.  I remember bumping into John Leeson (Voice of K-9) one night after most of the events ended for the evening.  He was shocked that my group and I knew who he was.  And he signed autographs for us, reading out loud what he was writing in his K-9 voice, LOL.

I watched till the end of Sylvetster McCoy (met him too, just last year) and then the movie (which wasn't HORRIBLE).

I have to say, I have always been a fanatical Cyberman fan.  Just love 'em.  Daleks are good too, but the Master was good fun as well.  The new show is good too.  I've liked all the new doctors as well.  :)

I tried watching a few of the more recent episodes and just couldn't get into it. The phone booth is visible to anyone, right? So, wouldn't more people notice a phone booth that wasn't there before and is never there again? I think that is what annoyed me, people would just walk by sometimes, completely oblivious to the phone booth that just appeared.

I didn't think so. Which is why I thought it was so odd that no bystanders ever went, "Oh my, that police box wasn't there a second ago." Granted I have only watched about 3 episodes. But, those boxes seem antiquated by today's standards. I'm not sure how abundant they still are in the U.K., but I can't imagine many would survive in the future. So it would likely look even more out of place in certain time periods, especially if you traveled to a point in the past before they existed. I know I'm in the minority, but it just doesn't make sense.

I did like one episode I saw where he took his companion to watch the destruction of Earth.

There are very few police boxes in the UK now. I think the producers/writers got around the issue by saying the TARDIS 'chameleon' circuit got stuck and that the TARDIS creates a field around itself so that people don't pay attention to it (except when it's good for the plot).

@Scissorlegs

I typically have no problem suspending disbelief, especially if a show or book takes place in a fictional or parallel world. But when something takes place in the world we know, it bothers me when things are too unbelievable.

Thanks for clearing that up guys. I will have to give it another shot with that in mind. I will probably try and start from the beginning this time around.

There are very few police boxes in the UK now. I think the producers/writers got around the issue by saying the TARDIS 'chameleon' circuit got stuck and that the TARDIS creates a field around itself so that people don't pay attention to it (except when it's good for the plot).

The Tenth Doctor calls it as a perception filter.  On the topic of the box itself, I think its anachronism is part of the joke now.  I think the Doctor explains why it's a Police Box the best though ;)  :

Edit: Also, here's a mini documentary on the Police Box, narrated by none other than Colin Baker (the 6th Doctor):

Wondering if people have seen the trailer for Series 7 and, if so, what your thoughts are :)

Also, I had an awesome dream last night that the new Series starts with a crossover between the 11th and 8th Doctors (I think this dream was caused by a news item here: http://www.sfx.co.uk/tag/doctor-who/ (http://www.sfx.co.uk/tag/doctor-who/) - can't post the exact link because the title has spoilers, but check out the March 30 item by Jordon Farley if you don't care about spoilers ;) )

I'm actually expecting the 8th Doctor to show up in the 50th Anniversary Special in late 2013 for some reason.  Also expecting Matt Smith's Doctor to regenerate then as well (his contract at present is until the end of 2013)

Thanks. I should point out I avoid all pre-publicity of all shows/films I'm interested in. I want to see it as the director/writers/actors produced it. Not what the marketing dept have dummed it down too  ;D

I hate the episode previews in shows like Battlestar Galactica I close my eyes while they are on!

I think he will turn out to be an excellent choice.

There were quite a lot of rumours it was him, which made me think it wasn't.

Yes, the WHO Dr is a nice twist.

Donna's ending always made me sad.  And yeah, the love story with Lee McAvoy in the Library guts me every time.  I always hoped she'd find him again. This is why I read/write fanfic.

basically for me, having a character lose his memory is worse you can do to him (even than death). I mean she goes through all those expriences, builds character, just to go back to the beginning again :(

Apparently Netflix is dropping the series for real :(

Have to find a new source for my fix... I more or less marathon David Tennant episodes when I'm home alone hanging out. Which is weird because based on overall story line of the Doctor, I don't think he's the best representation of the character. I just love watching him so damn much...

I've never watched Downton Abbey. GoT is really only interesting if you're into dudes with swords slicing eachother up due to complex political reasons while a lot of women hang around naked (and frequently get sliced up too). I'd have probably quit on it a while ago, but I really love Tyrion. Who was alive when I last watched, anyway. And Brieann, although I can't remember where she last was.

Anyway, I'm trying to go through the classic episodes on Netflix and it sucks because there's only one story arc from each season. Which leaves no time to become invested in a Doctor. I really enjoyed Patrick Troughton though.

I'm not super crazy about Jodie Whitaker but I wasn't really surprised by the casting choice since she worked with Chris Chibnall on Broadchurch. The late state of this season is killing me though, usually we'd already be in it by now!

I'm just curious (read: nervous) to see if they'll resort to cheesey, tropey gender stereotypes or not. I really hope not. The Master becoming the Mistress didn't seem much to change the agenda of evil though so hope springs eternal.

This is my wife's worry that the story lines could suffer in an attempt to exploit the new gender dynamics.

Well Dr Who is now female and it worked very well. Why? Because the Dr was never macho or sexist character in the first place. It was to a large extant gender neutral. The story was good, the cast were good. A bit of humour thrown in. A bit of horror, not too much given the pre-watershed time slot. The BBC have continued the hit series.

Not on the basis of the first episode. I thing that new directors and producers know full well that if they get it wrong their careers will be shot. It also attracts long time fans into production in a way other shows don't. On the basis of one episode it's looking good.

As good as it gets I think, his offsider Amy was excellent.
Tennant over did it and his offsider Rose was a mouth breather.

I think they overdo the zany, UK regional accents are exaggerated to annoying extreme.
I've seen most recent female one in other things and she's great, but in Who she talks like she's chewing a squash ball.

By all accounts there are going to only be 3 Tennant episodes and then the new guy takes over. They are doing the Tennant episodes to reinvigorate the franchise as the Foster one lost viewers due to the appalling (IMO) stories, scripts and characterisations. IMO they totally missed an opportunity with a female Dr Who.
