Title: Trolling 101
Post by: curiosityandthecat on December 12, 2008, 03:34:53 PM
QuoteFrom Wikipedia | "Troll (Internet)" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet))

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

* * *

There has been a recent surge in trolling, so I thought I would take the liberty to throw together a little primer on how to spot a troll, and how to best deal with one once you've caught one.  I will refer to the troll as it, rather than he or she, to keep from humanizing such a monster. Google. If you return basically anything, you've got a copypasta troll. If you don't return anything, try with another phrase. Look for discrepancies in writing style from one paragraph to another, things like capitalization and punctuation usage. If it fluctuates frequently, it's a pretty good give away.

Refusal to answer questions or continue a dialogue is a red flag, as well. Sometimes trolls can have the appearance of looking for an honest dialogue, but simply dangle the carrot and wait for a bite. If you question the author's motivation at all, your intuition is normally going to be right.

Combating trolling:
The best method of combating trolls is simply to not feed the trolls. That is, trolling behavior is normally a one-time shot, as 90% of the trolls you will encounter are simply spammers or basic trolls. By ignoring the post, it will fall to the bottom of the New or Active post lists, and we can all go about our day without the interruption.

If you do want to feed the troll, make it clear in your first response that you know there is trolling going on, but you want to "play" anyway. Sometimes it can be a good exercise for a number of reasons: boredom, venting or formulating responses to honest concerns raised by non-trolls on the same topic.

If you've seen any of my troll responses, you'll see that I like to just hijack the thread. I normally do this with a post and a picture about shampoo. Why shampoo? Why not?
Here are a couple macros to use if you run across a troll, as well as a link to the image file you can simply copy and paste, if you like.

I'm not very up-to-date with my internet language so i've always been a little afraid to ask 'what is a troll?'

Many thanks for the clarification. This thread should be a sticky :)

Being as old as I am (only exceeded by my extreme coolness  ) I've long known what trolls are though spotting them is not so easy as I have a tendency to flash-read which usually mean I only get a basic overview of some posts but what really gets me is the number of people who think that just because you disagree with them, particularly if you persist on a given line of debate because you don't think the points raised against yours is good enough, that you're a troll. Worse they will continue to call you one even when you point out what a troll is!

For the troll, trolling can be quite humorous and fun. However, my personal trolling experience was always confined to places where people take a topic that is otherwise unimportant and redefine it as seriousbuizness (more internet slang) - such as most sites in the video game community (the World of Warcraft forum is a perfect example). I think Happy Atheist Forum is far above the immaturity of such shenanigans.

Response to a troll:

Quoteu don't know wut the fuk ur talking about. i would beat ur ass any day of the week irl. i have sex with my pornstar girlfriend and u wouldn't even know what do with her.  because I'm a real man and ur nothing but a fake man. U hav no dik. i will kill u. i swear i will and if u think i wont just wait and see its over and ur mom sux too. she had sex with a dog that probaby had aids and now ur here. stupid piece of hsit. i rest my case. dum internet nerdz not knowing what a clit is.

Isn't the internet great?

Another good way to spot a troll is that it doesn't answer certain questions, it cherry picks them just as Fundies cherry pick the Bible.  Any question which highlights the troll nature or stupidity of its claims will be ignored as if it didn't exist.

It takes every bit of self-control I have to keep from playing with them. That, and if I set a naughty example, the boss will take away my magic powers.  :D

Perhaps this would be a support group for us? TTA (Troll Teasers Anonymous).

Someone who is playing the devil's advocate intelligently wouldn't be singled out as a troll   ;)

However, rule 1 has been interpreted in the past to include not presenting yourself as something you are not to the forum.  Which directly excludes having an account just to play devil's advocate.  Those that want to discuss that way can just do so; like I have occasionally in the past.

I think it's worth while to append two references to this very useful and entertaining thread.  They are both rather old, and more oriented to the world of usenet, but I think still quite applicable, not to mention fun reading, especially the second.

1) Trolling Lore (http://fravia.com/trolls.htm) is a very good overview of the subject, and food for thought, as an explanation of certain phenomena one sees on forums on 'teh interwebs.'

2) Linked from the previous page is the roster of types of Flame Warriors (http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/index.htm), which is a very amusing menagerie, indeed.  I recognize aspects of myself in some of these critters.   :P

Probably many of you have seen both of them previously, but I'm posting this for the rest of y'all.

That is a very entertaining and informative list. Like you, I too recognized aspects of those "warriors" in my own forum experience. I also noticed that some of the worst offenders on that list seem to be double true on this particular forum. Luckily for us the moderators here do a fine job of weeding those people out.

Sad but true.

Imho, the word troll, like the word spam, has been reduced to near worthlessness.   Both words now seem to mean just about anything somebody doesn't like.

When I hear the word troll, what usually comes to my mind is somebody who really wants to win an intellectual debate, but can't figure out how, so they change the subject to the poster they are debating.

Is OP an admin? I have no idea how to tell. If so, it's clear that you visit a certain imageboard quite often. Supposing this board as a whole is to promote awareness of morality in the atheist community, how do you reconcile your views with the "Internet Hate Machine"? I'm assuming that your answer will be something along the lines of "I browse that imageboard solely for entertainment, and the immorality seen on this imageboard is mostly trolling anyways."

If so, your lecture against trolling is hypocritical, don't you think? Because even if you solely lurk the Internet Hate Machine, you are a troll in some form. Or perhaps you differentiate your Anonymous identity from your true identity?

If someone is a huge MMA fan, but never actually fights, wouldn't it be safe to assume that said person has entertained the idea, possibly in daydreams, of participating in a fight? I would call that person a fighter in some form. What if they then went on a forum one day and posted that they thought MMA was inhumane and brutal? OP is doing just that. Is that not hypocritical?

And I would hope that if the OP is a mod or admin that he would not ban me on my obviously well-thought out response to his post. I would hope.

Oh, I'm well aware of 'chan speak', I just don't understand why someone who is obviously unaware of how a specific forum operates or even who the mods of a forum are would choose to make their first post a 'calling out' post.  Claiming curio is a troll/hypocrite because his OP contains pictures that, though they may have originated on 4chan, anyone can find via google image search, posted on just about every forum out there, etc makes absolutely no sense to me.  You're making assumptions as if you've been lurking the board long enough to be in a position to make them, yet you don't know how to differentiate between a mod and a member - it's confusing.

Only if you feel safe making incorrect assumptions.

Then get a grip on reality.
QuoteWhat if they then went on a forum one day and posted that they thought MMA was inhumane and brutal? OP is doing just that. Is that not hypocritical?

Your analogy fails. Setting aside the huge gap in severity required to call it hypocrisy, the OP does the equivalent of calling MMA a form of fighting and making suggestions in how to engage such a fighter when confronted by one. A lesson in self-defense, if anything.

Google's image search simply by looking up "message board troll". The fact that they may have originated on 4chan (though, even that would probably be a point of contention) means nothing. They are simply part of internet (pseudo-)popular culture.

I wouldn't ban you even if I had the power to do so. You've done nothing ban-worthy.  ;)

rizzyref, I am an admin (see, it says admin under my name, Curios doesn't say admin or mod...not that he wouldn't be good at it; we just don't need more mods right now) of this forum and I don't appreciate you coming here and throwing around unfounded insults at the membership.  If you continue to push this issue without supporting your claims I'll consider you to be purposely uncivil.

I think that you should familiarize yourself with the rules if you haven't already.  viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1522 (http://www.happyatheistforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1522)

I don't mean to be rude, I was pointing at a funny coincidence imo. Which part of the rules am I violating? So much for "happy".

To the rest of you, point taken, it was a weak analogy. And although when posting I realized it could come off as trolling, it really wasn't my intention.

And to curiosityandthecat, I assumed that you were a 4chan user because, although the image macros may be popular when it comes to internet culture, the origin of those macros is clearly 4chan. And I was giving you the benefit of the doubt by assuming that you were solely a "lurker" on 4chan, which we both know are the minority of users. I don't want to assume anything, so I'll ask you. Are you a 4chan user, and if so do you solely lurk or do you participate? And do you find this to conflict with your morals?

It's okay, Whit. What he asked isn't inappropriate. I didn't really answer whether or not I was a 4chan lurker, just that the images and style of forum macro don't necessarily have to be obtained through 4chan.

rizzy, I do lurk 4chan at times but very, very rarely participate, and never on /b/. Mostly on /v/ or /hr/. When I do occasionally lurk /b/ it's because I'm interested in the dark underbelly of internet subculture, partially for my area of academic study. I never really think of 4chan (but let's face it, when someone says 4chan, they really mean /b/, which is a shame for all the other boards) and morals in tandem. I think of 4chan, morals and ethics, and the interesting things 4chan does to the relationship between morals and ethics. People will post and say things there that they would never, ever think of doing in person, mostly because of the anonymity. It'd really be an interesting research study on the nature of identity and anonymity to study /b/, I think. Is the majority of it in poor taste? Of course, but it offers a deeper look into how people actually feel. Still, the suggestion it seems you're making (that voluntarily exposing yourself to something of questionable morality somehow defines you as being with questionable morals) doesn't follow. If it did, everyone who watched a violent film would be considered a violent person.

Did I cover everything?

Yeah, you answered my question and then some! But you broke 1 & 2! Ah well. Yeah, last year in English 300 my professor had us study internet psychology. One of the items was called "disassociative anonymity." The particular section sounded like it was specifically talking about 4chan, and I even laughed and turned to my buddy, who had no idea what I was talking about. But interesting comparison, your movie analogy. I often listen to violent music, and yet I don't consider myself immoral. Valid point.

I love /b/. It helps me troll other trolls and doesn't afraid of anything.

/b/ is like the id of the internet. Everyone thinks these thoughts, they just repress them because they are afraid of the demons that lurk their inner thoughts. The anonymity of 4chan allows you to be yourself for once without fear of judgment or serious ramifications (as long as you don't post cp or death/terror threats).

Here's a little paradox for you, McQ:

If I'm being forced to apologize it isn't sincere, is it?

Granted I do run my mouth (technically my fingers since this is printed) and perhaps what I said was wrong but if you are saying I need to apologize and I do, I therefore wouldn't be sincere about it.

BigMac. I said it is my opinion, not that you were forced. You can clearly see that. And we've known each other long enough here to shoot straight with one another. You know I have respect for you and appreciate you, but that I also won't tolerate when you step way out of bounds like this. The warning stands.

So I broke the unwritten rules.  Got it.  I guess this is why rules tend to be written.  I'll try not to offend you too much in the future.

I pointed you directly to them, and you did break them. The first word in the rules is civility. Typing, "No, dickbreath. You're unfunny." is not civil. Nor is it work safe, which we also mention in the rules.

Continuing to derail a thread by trolling, or acting like a troll (same thing) is against forum rules. Both you and BigMac posted a couple of pages of material that is against forum rules, all while derailing a thread that is intended to keep our membership from feeding trolls.

See how you broke them now?

And you're not causing me any offense, but nice try at baiting, which is also against forum rules. I'm just here to help moderate the forum.

It appears the first guy is explaining the that trolling is an art, while also attempting to get corrected by intentionally using "a" when "an" is proper, thus invoking a response from the other guy who corrected him. Then smiles as his point should have been clearly demonstrated, then the other dude realizes it.

Meh. You're going to have to try harder, man.

Try reading the following from the OP, and really take it to heart:

Quote
Quote from: "Wikipedia"An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.
Trolls are basically annoying, childish users who have nothing productive or useful to add to the community, and disrupt because they have nothing better to do.
I don't know how to put it any more clearly; you've failed to fulfill any of these criteria. (Though your contributions to the thread about an atheist dealing with his Christian family at Christmas time showed some promise.)  If you want to skulk proudly in the troll world, you've got some serious work ahead of you.

I don't know how to put it any more clearly; you've failed to fulfill any of these criteria. (Though your contributions to the thread about an atheist dealing with his Christian family at Christmas time showed some promise.)  If you want to skulk proudly in the troll world, you've got some serious work ahead of you.
According to Wiki:
I have raised controversial points/ideas
I have inflammed some against me in regard to those points/beliefs/ideas
Most of my evidence IS irrelevant as far as the staunch Atheist is concerned.
Take for example this post (http://www.happyatheistforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6554&p=100200#p100200).  What on earth could the Bible believer put up as proof or evidence other than these books of "historical" acts that would convince the skeptic?  These are historians and writers of the day.  Does every writer of today speak/mention about dark matter and it's evidence in their writings?  It's only the writers with concern/interest in dark matter that write about it.  In 2000 years (if we were to leave aside digital information and rely simply on physical books) how much would be found on the exact subject of dark matter?  I assume/acknowledge a lot more (on account that physicists today out-number writers/historians following the disciples around documenting their acts) than on Jesus and especially on the daily happenings of His few disciples.  Yet the skeptic wants PROOF.  One can only point at written pieces that mention this as evidence, otherwise there is no other evidence.  But the written text is thrown aside as hearsay.

I appreciate you saying I'll have to try harder...thank you.  That's encouraging.  But the fact of the matter is the concensus on this forum is that the basic way of spotting a troll = outlandish, therefore anyone of opposing belief is a troll...hence AD is a troll.

It's no skulk, it seems it is my only position given these facts.

However, based on the quote from my initial post here (http://www.happyatheistforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2332&start=165#p100201), it's the only conclusion on anyone opposing the basics of this forum or any forum's majority for that matter.  There are other criteria, however, this basic point/belief allows any Atheist to say to another with opposing/outlandish views, "You are a troll!" and be correct is saying so with no real reason to say he/she is wrong.

Man, I love knowing how to link to posts now...

I've not read EVERY single post, but suffice to say, I see a lot of  :headbang: and 12 or so pages of posts and not one disagreement (again, that I've seen...I'll now go through each post).  You are the first that has said so to my knowledge as part of the HAF "community" (only that you are in more agreement with the forum's purpose).

Edit:  I stand corrected.  Here's one (http://www.happyatheistforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2332&start=45#p59056),
not so blatently against, but could be construed as such.  And another (http://www.happyatheistforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2332&start=45#p59056).  Ok, well, there are a few that don't feel the same, but the point I think still remains as this is a sticky and so seems to be the concensus.

OK, but if you posted "with the intention of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion," then you've been much too subtle. (Though as I said, your Christmas thread work showed some promise.)   :P  Subtlety is a very poor modus operandi for the effective internet troll.

It's really intention which defines a troll, in my opinion.  If your intent in posting here is trollish, then you should work on your technique, because you've obviously failed to convince many (if any) of the members here that you're a troll.

What I have realized from encountering slightly less flagrant trolls is that they really have no intention of discussing anything, and it's really quite easy to dilute yourself into believe you had been discussing something with them all along.  :drool  lesson learnt.

There has been a recent surge in trolling, so I thought I would take the liberty to throw together a little primer on how to spot a troll, and how to best deal with one once you’ve caught one.

Some clarification please. What's a copypasta troll, and what's a troll?
If its someone who is challenging all the the time then that's called a philosopher. So some clarification would be helpful.

A copypasta troll is a person that takes one post and posts it to many forums and/or just copies and pastes from web sites (sites like answers in genesis and the philosophy part of Stanford are very popular).

A regular troll is someone who posts on forums to get people riled up and/or just for the lols. The exact definitions take a long time to go through, but the longer you use the internet for discussions, the easier time yu will have in recognizing trollish behavior.

It looks to me like a troll is a term that a group uses to threaten those who they don't want around. That could mean threatening anyone who challenges them once, or anyone whose approach is always challenging. If that's the case I'm all for trolls rather than yes-men.

No, there is a difference between people getting riled up by posts, and posting to get people riled up. Trolls also tend to avoid actually responding to what is said. If you want to not be seen as a troll, then just make sure you're honestly engaging the people that are responding to you and refrain from personal attacks and assumptions.

And ice trolls take double damage from fire based spells but are impervious to ice and frost spells.

What is a Troll?

Most people believe it is best conceptually visualized by and actual Troll - a hideous creature....hiding under a bridge!

Wrong.

Trolling...real Trolling is what Fishermen do.  they put out a nice, tasty bait and watch and delight in a tremendous strike - just like Marlin and Sail-fishermen enjoy!  Then...there's the fight, and that is fun, too!

Seriously, learn what trolling really is....raise the Outriggers, get ready for a strike!

Don't fall for this cheap trick.

Hmm... I kind of do my fishing at the local store freezer, so it may be a somewhat uninformed question, but are you sure you are not thinking of trawling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trawling)?

Trawling involves use of a net, trolling uses a bait drawn through the water.

My coin has one purpose - being exchanged for whatever it is I happen to want or need.

Well at least you don't have to worry about what your coins might think about his Grayness giving them an objective purpose whether they like it or not, right?

The Asmo's coins are Asmozealots. Whatever The Gray One says, they obey.

I love trolling Christians.. gotta be honest. Well, honestly I love trolling a lot of people but mostly Christians. I would never instigate the "attack" but counter-troll. Does that fall in the OK category?

No, that's YHWH the Fake. The Book of Asmoism clearly states that there is no Asmo other than Asmo and Ali is His Great Priestess.  >:(
