Title: Profile of a non-believing preacher
Post by: Firebird on January 03, 2017, 05:29:59 AM
The NY Times ran a profile of a former evangelical preacher  who is now the Humanist chaplain at USC: The Evangelical Scion Who Stopped Believing http://nyti.ms/2iHEtK9

Interesting article. I wonder how his family gets by, if he's not getting paid in his position at USC.

I like his more gentle approach to non-belief; the inclusiveness of it and what he said about an adult who just wanted to listen to the students and not mark them, grade them, lecture them etc. Reading about the alleged sexism in the conference rounds of the so-called New Atheists was distressing to say the least. However, I attended a talk in Conway Hall, London on aspects of atheism a couple of years ago and although one of the two speakers was a woman who was very well received, I couldn't help but notice that about 2/3 of the audience was male. Maybe this is just the corollary of the impression that I get that noticeably more women attend church than men.

I've heard about people joining Wicca in college and know of one person who did so, who I also went to High School with. Just as well, I know a girl who never finished High School who was (and possibly still is).
