"Journey into Space" was a 1950s radio sci-fi series about a "private" endeavour to get into space. Along with "Dan Dare and the Mekons" it was my favourite radio listening. I can still remember the characters and their voices!

Now "private" or commercial space launches are a fact. Elon Musk has just about proved their viability and other actors are in the wings. Anongst these are Microsoft's co-founder, Paul Alan (coincidently born in the year "Journey into Space" started). Alan has funded, Stratolaunch, "the world's largest aircraft" (by wingspan), which had successful engine trials in May last year and also taxiing trials.

Intended as a launch vehicle for orbital rockets the idea is to save fuel, thus launch load mass. I seem to remember other concepts along this line a good few years ago, manned flyback boosters back in those days before computing got a real grip. Also balloon lanched vehicles.

First launch is scheduled for next year, I will be very interested to see how this endeavour goes.
