Hi! It's me! Apathy! Just wanted to ask you a few questions but before I do that I want to give a little background:

I'm not spending much of my time very satisfyingly. I talk to people in chat rooms and that's all the communication I get on a daily basis aside from you fine athiests. I need to use my voice or I'm going to go crazy, so I got the idea to start a YouTube channel but don't know what to begin with. So I've asked my friends what they wanted to see and they responded with "your mum". I've taken that idea but I was also wondering, since you guys and gals are also my friends, what do YOU want to see?

Is their something you want to see in a YouTube channel? Is their something I can provide you with that can tickle your fancy? Tell me here and I'll do a video on it if it's within my capabilities.

Also if their are any questions about what I'm doing or something, then ask me here.

Hmm... Are you looking to make a legit career out of it, or just screw around and expand your social circle a bit? Programming depends on your goal.

Asmodean

That.

What I watch on YouTube, is programmers doing their thing, scientists doing their (Lenny Susskind's lectures. Have a weakness for those) and an occasional music video.

In general, for me to follow your channel, it would have to have been well-made and intelligent. Don't go that way if you want fame and fortune though; the unwashed masses generally seem to want what I would describe as absolutely worthless shit.

No not a legit career, I just want something to use my mouth for besides food. Being so passive is driving me crazy.

If you have any significant hobbies you could talk about that. No sense doing a YouTube channel about something you're not personally interested in. That would be shit.

You have a background in the arts of martial, don't you?

That is true but it is not something I can make a lot of content on.

If you like video games you could always do a Let'a Play. There are tons of those on YouTube

If you're just looking for an outlet and some community, I'd say pick whatever interests you and get involved. If you don't know much about it now, you can focus on the learning process. The goal should be that it's serving your needs. There's a community for everything, so you'll find a niche even if it's small.

Jeffrey, I feel you may be selling yourself short.
You could talk about the history of said arts.
Talk about what piqued your interest in it.
How it has influenced your life.
You could give detailed step by step tutorials.
I am sure people have done more with less.
To hell with those that think it's boring or obnoxious, this is an outlet for you.
Keep in mind though, I'm an idiot, and much of my incessant ramblings should be taken with less than a grain of salt.

Do political commentary. Make it way out there, so nobody can tell if you're serious and crazy or just kidding and funny (?)
Maybe your comments section will carry the video.
Or you could do crazy, dangerous stunts that make everyone think you might be brain-dead. Kids like videos of people acting like fools. But I guess that wouldn't be using your voice. And it would inevitably hurt. A lot.

I agree. It would seem really boring to base a channel on a topic or topics you're not personally interested in. Whatever it is you want to do, there are definitely others out there that share those interests who you can interact with. Heck, there are even loads of reaction videos with thousands upon thousands of views - something that is unfathomable to my mind. But assuming you want to do quality content, so don't go for that. ;)

Right now, the algorithms that get you more visibility on youtube (and the internet in general), is quantity over quality. That's not to say that just making a bunch of shit will work either, but don't try to put too much effort into the videos. Once you have the idea of what you're going to do, get the pace of 2-3 videos a week down, and get comfortable with it. Then you get to move onto the next step of self promotion. and I highly recommend you do it in this order, because unless you're going to be able to put out 2-3 videos a week for a long, long time, there isn't much point in promoting your channel, especially if you're going to pump any money into it.
Always question all authorities because the authority you don't question is the most dangerous... except me, never question me.

My suggestion would be to produce videos that you enjoy. Share your interests. You'll enjoy it more that way.

I review fountain pens and do videos where I drive people around rural North Dakota. There is not a single exciting video on my channel, but it makes me happy and occupies me. And, since it does interest me, I have a slow but steadily growing subscriber list and some very loyal fans. I'm satisfied.
