Title: The Trump Inaugural Address
Post by: Dave on January 20, 2017, 05:28:07 PM
Well, sounded much like his campaign, nothing new, to me.

A mixture of patriotism, nationalism, isolationism - and probably other isms * -  but not a lot of substance.

So, America first in everything - can a country remain a world power with that attitude without weilding an even harder fist than it has already done so? Can an iolationist America expect to wield influence in the "soft" areas of trade etc?

What will his attitude be to those multi-nationals who once had a base in America but are now global? Can he tax all of the and survive?

We have heard the words, let's watch the actions with interest.

* later: how could I have forgotten "protectionism"?

I don't blame you. That's what transcripts (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/donald-trump-inauguration-speech-transcript-text-full-read-a7538131.html) are for.

Just happened to be on the radio as I made a meal.

There is a site that does analysis of speeches, can't find it now though.

Trump seems to have had a relatively small turn out... at least compared to Obama.

I'm sure though, that those pictures are rigged. Sad.

They're not really. Someone just tried to prove a point on a Facebook thread by posting photos from the podium and you can still see the big empty white spaces on the Mall.

Also, his first Twitter background as president is from Obama's 2009 inauguration (http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2017/01/20/donald_trump_s_new_twitter_background_is_a_photo_from_the_inauguration_of.html?wpsrc=sh_all_tab_tw_top)  ;D

Yup, but he is Dick-In-Charge, well as much as Pence et all let him be.

Word was that very few of the White House workers want to stay on, nor the lowers reaches of the hierachy of the security services.

My wife, who hates Trump and voted for Hillary and can't stand to look at The Donald, thought that at least Melania looked classy.  So that's the takeaway from our house.

I wasn't thrilled with how some people tried to slut shame her early on. Yes, she posed nude. Good for her. Move on. Let's talk about what an idiot she is for marrying him, and her hypocrisy while being an advocate against cyberbullying.

Well, concerning her being an idiot, she's from Slovenia, and she married a billionaire who is now the most powerful man in the world.  So while I disagree with Trump on almost everything, I can't really say that she made a bad decision from the perspective of her self-interest.

I couldn't watch it for more than one minute (or I'd have to throw up).
My wife didn't like Melania's dress, she said that it made her look "fat".

Yes thank you for this Recusant, as I simply can't bare to watch or listen to this man. I was getting my haircut Thursday evening at the barber, and at one point my barber stopped, looked at me and said, "Are you okay?" What's wrong"? I asked what she meant, and she said, "The look on your face right now, you look like you're going to be sick or something'. I pointed to the tv on the wall which was showing DickHead preparing for the inauguration, and I said. "Sorry, but the site and sound of that man is reprehensible to me".

Mirror did a fair job of breaking down his speech bit by bit, you can read it here (http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/what-exactly-donald-trump-mean-9663139).

He definitely directed the speech towards his supporters, and as always trying to channel the grievances of a group of people who are predominantly white, rural and hostile toward both elites (Liberals) and multiculturalism (Minorities) in general.

DickHead's continued promise to them, which was reiterated in this speech was to return America to them, "Again". (A return to a mythical time in our past that exists only in the minds of those who never had to live marginalized lives.)

I think anathema would have been a better word, it starts and ends with an "A" just like ABBA, feel the beat from the tambourine.

OT but I seem to notice, here and on another mainly American membered forum, British newspapers seem to be popular sources of news. NYT and the Huff seem to be popular though.

Are other American papers that bad?

I read from a combination of both UK and American news sources, but your question peaked my interest so looking at which online publications I have bookmarked, and which ones I receive feeds from, the UK wins by a slight margin.

Besides UK there are one or two Canadian publications I frequent also.

Not sure if it's because American papers/new sources are that bad (Fox is horrible of course), but for me simply personal preference.

(British Porn on the other hand is lousy, definatley prefer American) 8)

I'm a sucker for accents, personally

Lately, my journalism includes:
- New York Times
- Boston Globe (more for local stuff though)
- Washington Post
- The Guardian
- The Independent

I also subscribe to Dan Rather's Facebook feed, and bizarrely enough, Teen Vogue has had a couple of strong articles about  fake news and Drumpf that go beyond what I normally read
Guess you gotta start somewhere.

I think there's something of a perception that a friendly ally will have a less biased view. Which may not be wholly off base. I'd argue it's at best biased by a different viewpoint which can be valuable as well.

Hmm, taking one step sideways to get a slightky more objective ooinion . .

I like the idea.

I notice certain British papers rarely feature: The Daily Mail being prime amongst those! Unless someone is taking the piss out of it . . .
