Title: Apathy's YouTube Channel
Post by: Arturo on November 03, 2016, 09:40:41 PM
Hi. I said before I wanted to start a youtube thing going so I can talk to...something. Here's my Channel:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS4lZeHRFQ0eX9ocbwI0uKQ

I use the name Pile OfDishes to hide my identity but you know it's me because I allow it.

And here is my latest video as of today:

It's Halloween themed. I wanted to get it up ON Halloween but that's when I thought of the idea so time did not allow, sorry folks. I hope you enjoy!

Hey Apathy,

That was cool. Really enjoyed the information about your ancestors beliefs. New stuff for me, and fascinating.

If it's ok, I have a *tiny* bit of feedback. It may flow better if you script it out beforehand. Or if you don't want to go that far, just jot down the major points and riff on them in order.

Definitely keep at it. Practice makes perfect, and you've got some good perspectives to share.

I subbed!

I actually did that because there was so much information I wanted to get out there. And because there was so much stuff I came out all stumbled and what not. I'm used to just speaking off the top of my head but I'm working on being more concise.

Kudos to you Mr. Jeffery Pile Of Dishes Goldblum for releasing the video 11 months ahead of your October 31st deadline. I did not recognize you without all the Hollywood lights and pizzazz.

Latest Video. Today I get into the mental aspects of martial arts. So Dragonia, I hope you're pleased.

:) Good point, I haven't run in about 6 months and I'm quite sure I've lost it....
But what I would want to know about the mental aspects of martial arts is, What are you thinking about in a match? What is your focus? How do your thoughts affect your fighting skills? Are there ways that you train your mind over the years, as you train your body also?
Because I don't just want to be a skillz ninja, I want to be a mental ninja too!  ;D

Hmm well it's been quite some time since I've been in a fight but what I remember is, I was mad. I would let myself get good and angry and then just go to town. I could make a video answering your questions as the answers could take up quiet a bit of time.

See, I've always had it in my brain that you're supposed to let your anger go, or rise above it, and transform it into some energy from the universe to focus your mind/body connection to hone you into an unstoppable force. Ummm, maybe I've watched too many movies....

Yeah movies don't go for much in the way of emotional intelligence lol. I've been told by people (who thought they were smarter than me because they were older) not to be angry. But HOW do you just not be angry? And at the risk of sounding like a spoiled brat, when is it ok for someone to be in charge of MY emotions? I became an atheist after that happened because I wanted to come to my own conclusions and have my own meaning in life outside of another's dogma. Freedom of choice and freedom of thought.

It's been about 13 years since I did any consistent training.  Flexibility - gone.  Speed - I used to be fiber-optic, now I'm dial-up. Precision and accuracy of execution - sloppy like an elderly couple...well you get the idea.  My lin wan kuen (chain punches) are still decent apparently, although I had to sell my bag and stand a little while back during some tough times.  Grad school and work get in the way too which doesn't help.

Yeah what stopped me was money issues. But I plan on going back in the summer if I have the money that I expect I will. Will also be going to school at this time but I don't expect that to be an issue since it will be for welding trade. Only thing I need to worry about is when I finish school because I will not have the money available like I do now.

What style of martial arts did you practice?

Quote from: Apathy on November 14, 2016, 12:55:51 AMWhat style of martial arts did you practice?

I dabbled in Korean Freestyle Karate for a couple of years in high school and later a bit of aikijujutsu before I went into the military.  After I got out I started training in some kung fu styles mostly Long Fist, Wing Chun and Choy Li Fut.  Last big thing I participated in was a Chinese New Year celebration back in 2002 (I think) where I did a Choy Li Fut two section staff form.  The previous year I was disqualified from sparring during a tournament for punching my opponent's foot (dead center in the sole of his foot) when he threw a side kick at me - which is apparently an illegal move.  I don't know why I punched his foot, seemed like a good idea at the time I guess.  He was fine, just confused afterward.

About 10 years later I started training in wing chun again but then I moved for a job and haven't really don't anything since.

Yeah, I've done voice work on films with famous folks, but haven't met many in person.
(never met: Harrison Ford, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Jimmy Kimmell...)

It's more likely you've hear my voice in a game or anime.

As for on-screen stuff, it's been decades - here's a clip from the Kung-Fu film:

Thanks! But keep in mind that this was spread out over the course of like 15 years.  I still play with the idea of taking classes again since there's a bunch of schools around here but between work and college classes it doesn't leave much time for training.  Maybe in the near future when I finish my last degree program I'll take it up again because there's a Kali school I'm quite interested in here.

Solid stuff - liked this vid. Very focused.

I've used the dark in combination with guided imagery to do full body relaxation.

Thanks Joe! I really enjoyed doing this one because I got to play with the lights to add the red and blue colors to my face.

As for the dark, I used to do this as a kid in the city. The house would get super dark at night and I could just walk around freely. It was especially fun going down stairs because it would be pitch black and I could go make a sandwich.

I've also done the guided imagery as well with ocean sounds on YouTube. That worked very well but it just didn't stick. I liked the images but after awhile I got tired of them. I think it's cuz they are all very much the same and I get the same feeling from all of them. My friend turned me on to a 10 hour video of a fish tank which lead me to another video of a lava lamp. I'll post them both.

Another thing, when you see the lights in the dark, you get a special feeling. It's very nice.

Yeah the fish tank one is especially...something. Every now and then, there is an cartoon shark that floats across the screen. It kind of gives me the same feeling as I mentioned to Mags about the lights in the dark.

Hey everyone, I just want to let you know that I'm still making videos but I'm not uploading them because I'm sort of copying someone who is getting into the same stuff I am and want to make sure that it's ok if I do the same stuff as him. I am asking him because he hasn't done these videos yet but has acknowledge that he will but not until mid next year. And I want to make sure this stuff is genuine but not steal his audience before he gets a shot at it.

So while i'm waiting for his response, is there anything that you guys might want to see that might be martial arts related? I plan on doing Star Wars themed stuff once I see Rouge One but I want to fill the time in between then. So if you have any ideas, leave me a post here or send me a private message and I will get to them in order of who comes first.

You're both right - everyone does need some amount of socialization. But how much is very dependent on the individual and even their current mood and situation. It's good that you see she's trying to be helpful, though.

Not that bad, but it does look like pen.

Should be easy to incorporate into a new tattoo if you ever want to.

I actually know what tattoo I want, I just have to find a Mexican tattoo artist because that's the theme. I don't trust the shops around here because they all have "American" in their name and it would be disrespectful if I went in and asked for an Aztec calender.

Good points. I think people get their logic screwed up when they make incorrect assumptions about the foundations the argument is built on.

That's interesting because my head kind of felt like after you work out for the first time. The soreness was there but not really bad.

Edit: And I forgot to put this in the video: The neo cortex is where the conscious memories are stored and it surrounds the whole brain. Meanwhile the hippocampus is where the "narrative" takes place and also where the memory begins. So my "lights" were coming on because they were super charged. Super charged long term memory.

My hypothesis on the girl is that her long term memory makes up for her short term but cannot give you a narrative. This would be consistent with the idea that hippocampus is the story teller. She can still form new memories however. She recognised me, knows my name, but I think she "borrows" people's stories and identifies with them to the point she thinks they are her own. Either way this girl is fascinating to me.

Yeah, I get 'em. Lasts about 20 minutes. Eye doctor diagnosed it.  Annoying, but not as bad as other migraine symptoms.

I get head aches as well at random times. Sometimes they happen once a day, sometimes they happen once in a blue moon. My current idea is that it happens because my brain is wired backwards. When things should go one way it goes the other and it causes a head ache. But it's also happened when I have caffiene and other times it happens when I'm not doing anything. They are called thunderclap head aches because they happen real fast and are very painful.

Yeah, immersion is the best way I heard. I've done it when I listened to music in spanish but I've lost most of those words. Plus smart phones weren't invented then so I couldn't know what the words meant. Now I can translate at a whim.

I'm beginning a test on myself with Retention Techniques I've learned from the book "How We Learn". Details below
Testing Retention Techniques (All Videos): http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLymSITx6pUAnVQwHtlraMCoy3ykwd9AE5
Stay tuned for updates to the playlist as I will be making weekly progress reports every Wednesday. And as always, thank you guys so much for watching, if you LIKED IT, please come back, and I will see you in the next video! Peace!

Interested to see how well it works for you. I'm currently learning Spanish with DuoLingo, but it's been difficult.
Yeah, immersion is the best way I heard. I've done it when I listened to music in spanish but I've lost most of those words. Plus smart phones weren't invented then so I couldn't know what the words meant. Now I can translate at a whim.

I've just started watching some Netflix movies. Either in Spanish with English subtitles, or in English with Spanish subtitles. First movie I caught maybe 1 in 5 words, so not too bad. It's spoken faster than I'm used to listening.

Spanish is famously fast spoken. Music they actually speak slower.

Glad to hear things are looking up.  I hit a pretty low point myself a few years ago.  I had a decent job, was married, had a nice house (rental but still pretty nice), and everything was going pretty good.  Then it all went to shit pretty quick - got laid off from my job, had a hard time finding something else because it was 2010 and the job market was horrible.  Ended up having to move out of the house and move 2 hours away to stay with family.  Around that time my wife had decided she was going to bail on me. I turned to giving guitar lessons every day just to have some kind of income besides the tiny unemployment check I had.

It all turned around slowly after I finally scored a job.  It was a fraction of what I had been making but it was a job.  I worked there for a couple of years. Met and started dating my current wife and was able to get my own apartment.  So, things can turn around definitely.  It sometimes just takes a lot of patience, perseverance, and hard work.  It's far too easy to accept a situation and just stay at rock bottom.  Too many people get lost there and simply give up.

So do you guys think my story telling has gotten any better on this forum or in my videos?

I think you're getting more comfortable on the vids. Seem more focused too.

It's a fine line... You don't want to seem scripted. It's better to be real.

It's also good that the topics are ones you're personally interested in. That gives a good energy level.

Yeah, I owe it all to big YouTubers who give out tips. Markiplier said to learn how to tell a story so I googled that and since then, I started getting more positive feedback.

Thanks for the kind words.

I'm thinking of not uploading videos anymore. I have a lot of content to upload, if I were to upload it. And I could still easily record videos if I wanted to. But I think I want to keep the knowledge I've gained for myself.

I might do a video on it to explain this but I don't think that knowledge is always a good thing. I am hasty with sharing what I've learned and sometimes that hurts people. And it doesn't really reciprocate back to me, not that I care about such things. If it does reciprocate back to me, I either learn something interesting, or conflicting knowledge upsets me and I become irrational. The same happens to other people when I tell them my knowledge.

I would much rather be a man of principle, where if I tell someone these are my rules, they can call me out on it. I am more inclined to be logical and accepting of someone else's critique if they call me out of my own rules. And I am much more appreciative.

It's always gotta be your call as to what you're comfortable putting out there online.

Good stuff, tho. Maybe post something more general, less personal?

Actually I just remembered I want to do long videos where there is background noise and a picture to create and ambient enviroment while you work.

There are already videos like that and this (https://youtu.be/cE5erINBHsE) is and example.

Just need some looping sounds, a multi-track audio editor, and video editor.
I use Sony Music Studio - worth a look

Shotcut is a good one too. I played around with that on my Dad's computer before I moved. It crashed a lot tgough but it's open source so their might be a couple good things for it
