Title: Creationist/Flat Earth/Etc Images
Post by: Pasta Chick on December 07, 2016, 03:14:35 AM
Some of these are just face-palmingly, WTFing, amazing.

There was a thread a while back where I started sharing some, encouraged by others to do so, but I felt bad hijacking the topic. Then today I saw this and thought "yeah this is becoming its own thread."

Well... The pole is actually irrelevant in calculating the probability of a puma being born with wings, but where does 50/50 come from? Like... The very first of many genetic mutations needed is what... Less than 3% likely, and you multiply from there, so the number goes down, not up.

...How DO stupid people do their math?

5 out of 4 people have trouble with math. It's hard.

If you use numbers and equations to prove a point, you must be able to defend them, no? Thus, if you are one of those five out of four, perhaps you should not make your points using mathematics, yes?

Having a margin of error >49% is, frankly, beyond embarrassing. Even if I draw numbers straight out of my ass, I will come as near as makes no difference fifty percent points closer to the actual probability of a winged puma being born to a wingless one. Watch;

Let us assume that in order for a puma to be born with wings, its mother DOES need to be on top of a telephone pole. In addition, the child needs three separate genetic mutations, which, for the purpose of this thought experiment, are deliberately few and common.

3% of all pumas have the first mutation.
20% of those have the second.
One in one thousand of all pumas has the third.

Let us further assume that one in one hundred million pumas is born on topa' telephone pole and that that, as stated, is a requirement for growing wings... Why not? This whole thing is cringe-worthy already.

This yields some straight forward multiplication;

(In this day and age, it's not cheating if you use a calculator for this part)

(0.03^2)*0.2*0.001*10^-8=1.8*10^-15

You see? My ass is pretty much 50pp tighter than the loose and floppy ass of the poster-maker. Also note that my birth-on-a-telephone-pole demand was meant to function a tiny little bit as a corrective force, thus lessening the embarrassment-factor of my own answer, which is more than likely off by... A few decimals, do let us call it.  ;)

That was math. Now is where I would normally start discussing evolution and how the math in question relates to it.

EDIT: Polished and clarified some language and dependencies. Should make sense in a this-is-purely-an-example sort of way now.

Also, do please correct my math if it's wrong; I'm not very strong in probability calculations.

I don't think so. The point is that evolution is obviously a ridiculous concept because putting a pregnant puma on a telephone pole would, according to it, yield an equal ratio of winged offspring to wingless. As if!

In the process of being made, this point is supported by a specific mathematical claim. That's perfectly OK, as long as the calculations actually get done, even if they are done wrongly. If not done at all, that same point can be made without using offspring ratios as a helper. To a person who does have those two metaphorical brain cells rubbing against each other, misuse of data demonstrated here only serves to add another level of ridiculous to the whole thing.

Yes, but this was not a probability distribution for god-made baby pumas having wings this particular creationist fool or the imitator thereof was talking about; this was about what we, the evilly-nasty-sciency people claim.

This is akin to relaying what a person who speaks a language you do not understand says, by speaking in tongues.

And yeah, I think Poe is going to be unavoidable here. That's just the nature of the beast. Many are quiet serious and pretty much the same (hence the existence of Poe's Law in the first place).

Ah! Men.

Actually, I did read a research article some years ago about self-perception and intelligence. The study seemed to indicate that those with below average IQ tend to consider themselves "as smart as the next guy." My personal experience tends to agree.

Yes, something like that, although I seem to remember it being specifically about intelligence, and not experience. Pretty much the same curve though, albeit with non-zero Xinit and Yinit values. One is drawn to assume that that may (probably in part) have something to do with the fact that if you are too dim to reflect on your own intellectual capacity, you just don't.

From there, the very unintelligent think themselves average, the average think themselves a bit dimmer than they actually are, the smart... Usually know how smart they themselves are, but are prone to attributing intelligence to themselves and especially others, which they do not possess.

Thus, if the puma-person was for real, one may assume that he or she thought themselves clever in making that particular point in that particular fashion. An Asmo looking on it from the outside though, can not understand how such levels of ignorance are possible in someone capable of writing and manipulating pictures.

.

I do not fully agree on the basis that truly smart people are fully aware that they do not know what they do not know. In fact the really smart people have no trouble or hesitation in pronouncing themselves ignorant of most of the worlds collective knowledge. When one thinks of the library of congress, for example, it is easy to be humble despite ones superior IQ.

That is certainly true, if not quite what I was talking about, intelligence not being synonymous with knowledge. It does come close though, so it's certainly something to consider. The problem I see is that for the more intelligent, there may be a difference between general self-perception and calculated response when "pressed" into it.

"Sphere" is like, just a word, man. It doesn't have to mean round, it's just, you know, a term.

...I could actually go on a massive and mostly unrelated rant about how people seem to not give a fuck that words have specific meanings and you can't just spew them forth and redefine them later at will. But I feel like that is an entire thread of its own.

As to the rest... FES FAQ (http://wiki.tfes.org/Frequently_Asked_Questions)

In short, they have no posted explanation for why the sun moves back and forth. The Earth is a radial magnet, though, because reasons, and I'm sure it's pulling it, also because reasons.

Hmm, that meme is different than the image I found associated with the original address. Just for interest, here's the one I found:

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftheness.com%2Fneurologicablog%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2015%2F07%2Fcreationist-meme-02.jpg&hash=70c49de1096c95344c220762d1fe5a978c173d19)

As for McCarthy's idea, despite the fact that he's a geneticist, he's apparently been unable to produce any genetic evidence supporting it. Instead he relies exclusively on morphological similarities between pigs and humans, i.e. some physical characteristics are shared by humans and pigs. He claims that the reason there's no genetic evidence is because "humans are probably the result of multiple generations of backcrossing to chimpanzees, which in nucleotide sequence data comparisons would effectively mask any contribution from pig" (source (http://phys.org/news/2013-07-chimp-pig-hybrid-humans.html)). His, eh, outré hypothesis hasn't got any traction with scientists who study human origins, as Pasta Chick said (though not in so many words  ;)).

Steaming. :sadnod: Probably infectious and certainly toxic too. :sadnod:

Also,
Quote from: link aboveAll I can say is that I'm beginning to get very, very tired of so-called "scientists" and their groupies thinking and talking like religious fanatics, and of existing "acceptable" scientific theories increasingly taking on the stained patina of dogma. McCarthy appears to have the credentials; why don't those who disagree with his "outlandish" conclusions answer him with scientific rigor, rather than ad hominem?

I'd answer a child with no credentials whatsoever with scientific rigor unless that child was completely full of shit.

For the vast majority (At least where I'm from) of the generally intelligent, credentials mean little - the quality of one's work means a lot. A Ph.D by itself means little more than that you were at one form of school or another for a really, really long time - if that. They give those things out to honour people too, or so I've read. Three letters and a dot don't make you a competent scientist any more than the titular M.D makes you a competent surgeon.

I admit, I did "wade in" a bit. McCarthy's tactic of sprinkling comments from his cheerleaders in the midst of the exposition of his hypothesis was almost as unpleasant as the design of the site. I left off when he tried to use the mythical "cabbit" (cat-rabbit hybrid) as support for his idea. His attitude of "well, people give a number of reasons why it's not possible, but there are other people who swear it's happened" is disingenuous given the fact that the naysayers are scientists and some of the most vociferous pro-"cabbit" people are selling the supposed hybrids. :eyebrow:

By the power of The Asmo, behold The Crocoduck!

...I can see the similarities they see in the existing species, but... Common ancestry does not constitute hybridization.

Mammals do share large chunks of their genetic makeup. We even share a fair bit of it with like... Pine trees. Doesn't mean that you can stick your penis into a hole in a tree and produce an ent.

Which is a damn shame. I feel like we could use an army of Ents about now.

Honestly, it does surprise me how some people fall for absolute garbage as easily as they apparently do (I don't personally know any such individuals) and then how hard it is for them to "fall out of it" when presented with the evidence to the contrary.

I mean... If the theory of gravity, for example, was shown to be utterly false, I would read until I turned blue, then change my bloody mind. I would not go all "Ooh! But NEWTON said..!" Where does this difference in people stem from, I wonder...

...Also, reminds me of that graph they used at a convention I attended to demonstrate the attitude towards progress. Basically it had about 20% on the far-left. The conservative crowd, represented with a grumpy white man with a thoughtful expression on his face, the thought being "Things were SO much better before!" The next 65% were the fence-sitters/weather vanes/go-with-the-flowers. Basically, ye olde Average Joes. The rightmost 15% were the forerunners. That's where I am. I like new knowledge, science, progress... Change, dammit! And I don't understand those, if the graph is to be believed, 20% who have a strong impulse to resist it. So... Those who actually want to reverse it, well... I can't contort my mind around their minds.  >:(

It's not, but our human eyes and brain interpretations make it seem like it is. In the same way that we humans are susceptible to optical illusions, our thinking is susceptible to logical illusions. That is why we need to utilize logic and learn fallacies, because it doesn't matter how smart a person is, we are all susceptible to irrationality. Now, some people won't even question that they are looking at something that only seems logical, and even when it is pointed out that it is not, they tend to deflect criticism rather than vetting it. Then they find smart people who also fell for the same logical illusions, some of them smart enough to come up with seemingly solid arguments for them.

That is how people fall for absolute garbage.

If the "animation" depends on movement of your eyes, then it's not animated. If I keep my eyes still, the image is still. If I move them, it seems to sort-of rotate a little, but that has more to do with my analogue nervous processors trying to keep up than with the image itrself.

I try to explain to people that people fall for logical fallacies in the same way we fall for optical illusions. Nobody I've told this to understands though. But when it comes to Jebus, "his knowledge passes all understanding."

Now if you can understand that your perception of things is not omnipotent, then why can't you understand you will fall for anything given the right circumstances? Because your knowledge is no absolute, you will easily fall for just about anything. I think it's because they acknowledge their ignorance, they expect everyone to be just as ignorant as them. Or they feel that because they are dumb, they will never understand what they don't currently know.

I'm not sure what the learning curve for the average person is but I see my Father, an old man, always learns new things and there in he is open to accepting knowledge. However, both my Dad and my Step Mom are the kind of people who will reject, angrily at times, anything that doesn't fit their current beliefs. And I think it's because they feel so strongly about them, because the beliefs get reinforced, so they don't see how the another truth could easily knock their belief to the curb.

People I think naturally protect their current beliefs, because being gullible is a bad thing, and an honest evaluation is difficult and takes time, and for me and I'm sure at least some other people, it takes practice. Out of the few choices, just keeping the original belief, maybe altering it a little, is the path of least immediate resistance. I don't agree with it (and wish it was much less common), but I understand it.

I understand what you say, Davin, I also find that people (including myself) find it very hard to modify things learned early in life, even though my adult mind knows them to be fallacious or irrational.

Even stupid stuff, like my sister - when I was about 8 and she 13 - say to me, "Blue anf green should  not be seen without another [colour] in between". Silly but I still feel "guilty" when I break that "rule".

Yeah, it sucks that our brains work like that. With some effort and time we can train our brains to operate better. Just like talking, reading, mathematics... etc. we should be teaching children (probably after 12 years old), how to apply logic and how to recognize fallacies. I think it's weird that logic is such a small part of school.

I think they should start earlier than 12 years old. I think we should start teaching children how to apply logic and how to recognize fallacies the minute they are born.  :notsure:

They're already teaching my kindergartner stuff like that. Every day he brings home a book and he has to circle whether the book he just read is fiction or non-fiction.

The other day he brought home a book about shapes and what we can do with them. One can stalk up squares, round things roll, triangles have angles, etc. He said it's a fiction book because shapes don't have faces, arms, or legs. I told him that they added those things just for fun, but he insisted that it was fiction--he's right, in reality, these things don't have faces, arms or legs.  :eyeroll:  We went through the whole book again but I covered the faces and I asked him, if, in reality, round things rolled, if squares could be stalked up etc. In the end, he agreed that it was non-fiction. When he finds out that animals speak in a story, he automatically says it's fiction because an animal doesn't speak.  :picard facepalm: (Try convincing him that a snake spoke to Adam and Eve.)  ::)

He seems to want to believe in a magical being who's flying reindeer pull the sleigh and help him deliver Christmas gifts...so he "fixed" the story. He said Santa drives around, he doesn't fly around. He enters homes through the front door, not the chimney. --I think I can live with that.  ;D

I don't know...it must be difficult for religious parents. You know...to have their kids learn the difference between fiction and nonfiction when they're trying to convince their kids, that they have to believe, that one day one man walked on water.  :shifty:

I remember Critical Thinking Skills being taught to me in school but I don't remember when. We didn't cover fallacies though. We just covered basic things like what kind of argument to make. And one thing I remember and that I don't agree with is that, the best arguments are the ones that fit in with what we already know. I would think the best arguments are the ones that are right.

This one reminds me of a short s-f story.

Aliens landed and offered mankind all kinds of things, the end of food shortage,, transportation to  new colonies etc. But they were careful not to let humans onto their ship until just before departure. However an agent go on, took photos and got back off.

One of the photos was of a book and, after weeks of intensive work, it's title was translated as "How to serve humans". Seemed good, until they translated the blurb on the back - it was a recipe book!

Maybe not "incompetent" but at least the Spartans killed the children that were perceived weak by either showing signs of sickness or unable to perform a task. Also I've heard in some pagan cultures, like witch craft, if the witch were unable to perform their duties, they would be killed by the village. For old witch craft, the witches were female and considered pure and like a goddess, and therefore they could heal people, if they could not heal someone, the rest of the village would kill them.

I'm saying this straight from memory so I don't have any links at this time if you were looking for some.

Wicca is only about 70 years old, so it wouldn't be them. It's like the new testament of witchcraft meets Scientology.

Right. My point is there were no Wiccans prior to 1955 or so. "Wicca" is not an umbrella term for pagans of any era any more than "Lutheran" can be used as an umbrella term for Christians.

You said "some Pagan cultures, like Wicca..." and also referenced Shaman which Wiccans don't have, then clarified by saying you were talking about "old religions of Europe before Christianization." If you didn't mean it as an umbrella term for old world Pagans I'm not sure what you did mean.

When I wrote the original post, I knew I was misrepresenting Wicca, I just thought it would be ok if I left it like that because I have to go back and change, then forget what I'm trying to say. I didn't think I was using it as an umbrella term. Now that I've already wrote it, I'll go back and fix it.

EDIT: There, I've fixed it to what I originally meant.

Ah, yes! This weekend, The Asmo thinks Him that He might go for a blow job from Satan with no teeth. Between reading His ridiculously fat physics book accompanied by His ridiculously fat university textbook with which to explain the first one, and do let's not forget Resident Evil 7 - the first Resident Evil game The Asmo is inclined not to like.

That image is based on ignorance. The path of light on the ocean is caused by sun glitter on the waves; a smooth body of water will show an almost perfect reflection--not a path of light. It has pretty much nothing to do with curved vs flat surface.

I find it funny when he opens the second egg he is like "I don't know what this is. I have no idea. Why am I even conducting experiments? I should go home and rethink my life..." I don't know much about physics that I can verify but apparently, if you're a particle going near the speed of light, earth looks flat. But that's not what flat earthers say. They say it's visibly flat from here and that round earth is all a conspiracy.

Er, at the speed of light, as I understand it, everything looks flat - in the direction of your travel at least! Just as you would look flat to a stationary observer on Earth - it's all relative.

Yes I think relativity is the understanding of the phenomenon. But at least I should state my source...here

https://youtu.be/VNqNnUJVcVs

I think that with relativity in mind, that our perception is only one fragment of the way things are. If we consider the way things look in different....fragments than our own, then we might reach a truer understanding.

The water is stuck in the mitten of the Great Lakes, imagine a hand holding a basketball and it had water poured on it. The water of course would pool between you fingers and the ball, ergo the world must/is flat.

It's not that hard simply empty your mind of a rational thought and reason, basically discard all accumulated knowledge and the ability to think.

Another way to think about it,  try to become a lump of coal, or better yet a fossilized piece of dinosaur poop...and you too can think and rationalize like a creationist.

My relief routine, once the "wet" phase finished, was to wrap the area in cling film then wear a modified t-shirt that was tight around my torso. That very much reduced the biggest problem, friction - even one's own breath on the tiny body hairs hurts! Then sleep, wrapped tightly in the duvet and in a nest of pillows and cushions sitting on the sofa.

Friction is hell but, since an absence of contact is not easy to achieve and every air mivement hurts,, a constant overall pressure is second best. Just don't wriggle or fidget! Dose up on Tylenol plus aspirin. There is not much that can get at the virus itself, you can only try to alleviate the gross symptoms. That person must have wasted a small fortune not getting much relief at all! Idiot!

Well, yes. Facepalm and all that, but the explanation seems a little misguided also. Newtonian gravity pulls things towards the center of the Earth. Einsteinean gravity states that it's the curvature of space that causes objects going in straight lines to orbit each other. By extension, it's the space pushing us towards the centre of gravity.

It's subtle, yet the difference is rather profound when you start examining it.

Well they taught me Newtonian physics in high school rather than actual physics. Which was profound to me in that it didn't look like it was well detailed or actually answered any questions other than "why don't I fly away?"

Yes, that is certainly an aspect of it. While a person of certain... Level of education, not to mention intellectual integrity, will look at the facts as relative to varying degrees, a person who wants to believe that the Earth is flat can latch onto semantic imprecisions and outdated approximations (and approximations are something both Newtonian and Einsteinean gravity are) in order to "prove" that their narrative is true and just and righteous and that Australians do, indeed, walk the right way up. Hmph! Ridiculous!  >:(

I find the level of critical thinking lacking on the part of those who believe this flat earth bullshit. And not only that, the level of evidence they actually need to believe bullshit is completely underwhelming. Meanwhile, when they ARE provided with evidence, they actually deny it on all grounds. They don't want to be open minded about it for some reason but also for some reason they are open minded to the idea that the earth is flat.

Right before the solar eclipse, there were planes spreading chemtrails, which were obviously hallucinogenics designed to make everyone there see an object pass in front of the sun. Because when totality hits, you don't need the glasses any more (and you can't see anything with them on during it either). Also, it gets pretty dark and you can see what looks like a 360° sunset. It also get pretty cold. All of that can't possibly come from just the glasses.

Also, the glasses are deceptively simple and thin cardboard. But really, if you open them up, you can see a complicated electronics system that must cost about $100,000 per pair. NASA spent a lot on this supposed Eclipse and they're doing it all the time. The next one in the US is in less than seven years! Where do they get the budget?

Those are great.

Remind me of a video I saw where a guy thought that since the Earth rotates at about 1000 MPH as the conspirators want us to believe, that if he jumped, he would end up in a different state. He jumped and landed right where he started, thus proving that the Earth is flat and not spinning.

That started a line of thought in my mind. I can see how some might forget that the person jumping is also travelling at the same rotational velocity as the ground he or she is standing on, therefore will still have a vector in the direction of rotation as well.

But, they will also have intertia, will lose a little that "relative to Earth" horizontal velocity whilst they are airborn. Would they land in the exactly the same place on the micro or nano scale? The difference would actually be lost in all the "noise" in the system, slippage/skidding, limb position changes etc, but it should be possible to build an apparatus to test this to a high degree of accuracy.

But, is it worth it to test such a silly thing? Great as a sort of eccenctric exercise, a science folly, though! Worthy of the Ignoble Prize perhaps.

They guy could go onto a bus and while it's in motion he could jump. If he doesn't die from the impact of the back of the bus, then his idea is pretty stupid.

Ah, but. Yes, the person jumping in the bus problem. Before leaving the floor he is travelling in the same direction and at the same velocity as the bus. Assume the bus remains at a constant velocity. The jumper decelerates, relative to the bus, for as long as he or she is airborn. Should they be standing near the rear of the bus and be able to remain airborn long enough then that rear wall would indeed hit them, at the difference in velocity between that of the bus and that due to their deceleration, tiny fraction of an mph.

That a human cannot remain long enough, under his or her own power, is the point. Had the person been launched vertically to a couple of hundred feet, off the bed of a speeding lorry, by a spring device they would land (badly) on the road behind the lorry.

I think old Albert had something to say about this.

[Used to be able to do the maths for this sort of problem once . . .]

If he jumped high enough he would hit the top of the bus with his head, suffer brain damage and die. Then we wouldn't have to listen to him any more.

Lol, but that would be due to air friction and wind, than to the speed of the bus vs. the person.

Two tests can be done to check:

Outside the bus, as it goes by, the person can jump when at the front, and see how far they would travel by the time they land.
Inside the bus, do an equal jump.

Then compare the distances "traveled."

If the bus is traveling at 30 MPH, then the person would only need to be in the air for half a second to "travel" 21 feet. If they can manage a whole second, then they could make it 43 feet.

But, at the moment of jumping (vertically)  the person is also doing 30mph, or whatever, in the same direction as the bus so, near as dammit, yes relative to the bus they will travel the same distance. Any loss of speed due to lost momentum whilst airborn will be tiny and lost in the "noise", but will still exist. The air around the jumper is also travelling at the speed of the bus (if all the windows are closed tight).

Well, just track the time in the air, with the distance difference, and repeat a few thousand times. Aggregate the data and see if there is a trend to "moving backwards."

As I said, in practice, with a jumping human, its probably immeasurable due to uncontrollable variables - but that does not mean it does not exist.

And its connection to "belief" is only where this applies the works of Newton and Einstein, in which I have "faith".

;)   A math exercise can prove that the earth is flat.  When you differentiate an equation....like Y=X^2   it becomes dy/dx=2X......you are actually finding the exact slope of  two connected points on the equations curve. It is so small a space on the curve, that it is for all practical purposes a flat length of line. .........By extension, we are so tiny a location on the Cartesian graph of the greater universe that we just have to be living on a flat place. Just like the differential says.......... :bigspecs:....... :point&giggle:

Hmm, the Sun would have to be a sort of oval, or convex lens profile, with two pointy ends, one above the geographical North Pole, the other rotating around the cicumference.

That is a wonderfully persuasive refutation of the flat earth proposition Silver.  Both you and the sun lamps are cleverly illustrative.

Designer cats: How competitive breeders could be endangering animals (https://www.express.co.uk/expressyourself/141996/Designer-cats-How-competitive-breeders-could-be-endangering-animals)

Nature would not produce something like this:

Just as it would never produce this:

(British bulldogs can't even give birth without undergoing C-section).

^ I just have a problem with designer pets in general. The amount of inbreeding that goes on to achieve an aesthetic at the detriment of the animals' health is an absurd from a biological point of view.
