Recommend me some podcasts...
« on: May 19, 2017, 10:56:07 AM »
As the title suggests I'm looking for some new podcasts to listen to. I'll listen to most topics if they're well made.

I really like SGU http://www.theskepticsguide.org/ they talk about all kinds of science things and often go into explaining the reality behind headline grabbing "science" articles.

I also like pseuodopod http://pseudopod.org/ for it's horror stories.

Also, for news I like BBC's Global News Podcast http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02nq0gn/episodes/downloads They also have a few more. It's a much better news source than the big US networks.

Welcome to Night Vale http://www.welcometonightvale.com/ is a good humor/horror/sci fi podcast. It got very popular pretty quickly.

I listen to a lot of podcasts, but those are some of my favorites that I think have a higher chance of appealing to others.

Thanks Davin.  I listen to them mainly when I can't sleep so am not sure the horror ones are a good idea but I've added SGU and the BBC to my list.  I use a really good app called castbox to listen, I recommend it if you listen a lot.

I listen to the "Joe Rogan Experience". He's not a genius or anything but occasionally he has some interesting characters. You can watch them on YouTube or he has a website you can download them somewhere. https://www.youtube.com/user/PowerfulJRE
But, uh...well there it is.

Good to see you Claire!
Lately I've been listening to Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People. It's a comedian named Chris Gethard who takes a phone call from an anonymous person on every podcast and talks to them for an hour. He's not allowed to hang up, and they just talk about whatever the caller wants. It's been really fascinating, sometimes painful, always interesting.
Also listen to This American Life and occasionally Radiolab, which are really just two radio programs on National Public Radio in podcast form.

I am not much of a podcasty person but I had occassion to link to BBC's "Four Thought", to xSP. You probably know of these, Claire, but I thought them worth mention if only for others.

These are 15 minute talks on a wide range of subjects that usually pack a full load into that short time. The one I pointed xSP at involved the effects of parents spending more time gazing at a screen than interacting with their babies - and the possible effects of this later. Doing this at home with the TV has been common for years but smartphones and tablets have spread this "non-interaction with kids" to travel etc.

Thank you for the other suggestions.  I'll look up Joe Rogan and the Beautiful Stories one.

I do already subscribe to a lot of the Radio 4 ones but Four Thought isn't on my list though so I'll add it in.

Did you listen to S-Town? If you didn't, drop whatever you're doing right on its time wasting ass (unless its taking care of your daughter, obvs) and GO LISTEN.

Hey Ali, good to see you! And thanks for the reminder, that's the one from the Serial people, right? Subscribed.

Good to see you too! Yes, and all of the episodes were released at once so you are free to binge.

If you like mind/brain related stuff, Gloucester recommended BBC Radio 4's All In The Mind podcasts. I'm loving them!
I'm just a student of the game that they taught me.

For any history fans, especially those who like historical myths and movies debunked, with a touch of malicious fun, I can reccomend Paul Sinha's Historical Revision

This is just the latest series.

If you're looking for fiction, there's lots out there...

Wormwood was a great arcane mystery show - all episodes are here:

Pendant has a number of shows running, with new episodes all the time:
http://pendantaudio.com/

Dream Realm has fewer shows, but they're quirky fun:
