Title: Favorite Song, with video
Post by: Sandra Craft on December 10, 2011, 11:51:31 PM
Here's another good getting to know you game -- post a video of one of your favorite songs, a song you always like just a much the next time you hear it as the first time you heard it.

Mine is the Beatles Blackbird (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaSMROk-D-A&feature=autoplay&list=PLFC5F3C3D270668C1&lf=plpp_video&playnext=1)

(and Bruce, you can post whatever else you want but I'd appreciate if you'd also repost that "DirtyDeeds Done Dirt Cheap" video -- I've been trying to find the original post but I just can't)

Blackbird is a beautiful song. A song I never get tired of is Holy Diver (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCpRrLIVyGc) by Dio.

I can't say I have one favorite song above all others.  There are, however, many songs which I dig a lot and/or may have influence me musically in one way or another.  A few examples are:

Dream Theater's - Metropolis Part I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaQpC4HuJ5M)

Jason Becker's - The End of the Beginning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4aIkF7G0ok)

In Flames - Zombie Inc. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuQcmOIVWIk)

This is causing my head to hurt...

I've narrowed it down as best I can.

1) In the Heat of the Night - Whitesnake

2) Black - Pearl Jam (in a particular mood or sufficient alcohol, this will tear me up)

After the top two, it becomes more difficult...

3) (Welcome Home) Sanitarium - Metallica

4) Symphony Of Destruction - Megadeth

5) Mistreated - Dio (live version from Inferno: Last In Live)

Tied for 6 & 7) A Secret Place & Prince of Darkness - Megadeth

8/9) Death before Dishonor & Bad Company - Five Finger Death Punch

And a bonus track appropriate for today's political climate:
Elected - Alice Cooper

Oh, I know the OP wants a video, but some of these songs video's are junk (In the Heat of the Night) and some I have never seen.

Alright, so here are some other songs I never seem to get tired of:

Alter Bridge - Blackbird (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwhbcdbkeXY) (Not a cover of the Beatles song)
Judas Priest Dissident Aggressor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_mpt8xyZVI) (Man, what a voice Rob Halford used to have...)
Led Zeppelin - The Ocean (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REZW10v67bI)
Megadeth - Holy Wars... The Punishment Due (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYlUe-SDqA0)
Metallica - The Unforgiven (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUb0TmXuECM)
Motörhead - Damage Case (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE1ypEqW9x8%5B/url)
Pantera - I'm Broken (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-V8kYT1pvE&ob=av2e)

Too lazy to post any more right now.

Per your request:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNy1KnPFhvY

I wouldn't say this is my favorite song, but the River Plate (Buenos Aires) concert by AC/DC had more energy than any I've ever seen (I just saw all the videos).  Go to You Tube, AC/DC River Plate and you should be able to find all the songs.

Thanks, Bruce.  I could remember the name of the song, and that it was a live performance, but not the band.  The thought of going thru YouTube searching on just the song name was daunting.

On the note of favorites with high energy, here is one of mine: Sing Sing Sing (with a swing) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDsWyXIR1to)

No!  (But it would AMAZING if that was true!)  Cat Stevens was an English singer-songwriter most popular in the Seventies (who, according to the infallible wikipedia, became a Muslim apparently); Sufjan Stevens is from Detroit and is something like an agnostic Christian (at least from what I can make of the fairly odd lyrics of his songs relating to religious stuff).

I love Placido Domingo -- he was the first singer who made me hear opera as something other than people yelling in a foreign language.  I can remember it like it just happened: I was channel surfing and stopped at a production of Samson et Deliah because I noticed Riccardo Muti was the conductor and I was crazy for him.  Then Domingo came on and started singing and it was like liquid gold being poured into my ears.  Opened up a whole new world for me.

Anyway, here's my favorite song from Turandot:  Non piangere, Liu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmtXPZ85EfE)

Garth Brooks: 'We Shall Be Free' -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gg9Me90bvtA

When I heard this song and saw this video as a young child (the song came out in the early 90s, and I'd heard it by 3rd or 4th grade)... I was just electrified. I hadn't heard a song sung about human rights and freedoms before. Especially the lines "when we're free to love anyone we choose, when this world's big enough for all different views, when we're all free to worship from our own kind of pews... we shall we free". I just thought "oh, wow!"

Brooks wrote the song in reaction to the 1992 riots in LA. So I know the video is dated by about 20 years, and yes, it does reference religion... but I still LOVE it. Because most importantly, it refers to freedom, to tolerance and acceptance, to getting rid of prejudices and hatred. That spoke to me as a kid, and it still speaks to me now.

Are you ready for some Japanese funk?  This is wild. I couldn't keep still.

Funky indeed.  The Japanese James Brown.

Yeah. That's about an 8.2 on my weird-sh!t-ometer.
Strangely catchy, though.

a'ight, let me lay another one on you. Ever heard of the Swedish metal band "Meshuggah"? Here's a jumpy little number called, "New Millenium Cyanide Christ"

Just a bunch of blokes on the road, playing air band with their own music

Note the Buffalo Sabres jersey!

Here's a clue: don't listen to all the little notes. Zero in on the repeating big smashing cymbal hits and the snare back beat.

"And now for something completely different"

Fun. I'm not a HUGE metal fan, but I've been to a concert or two. Saw Meshuggah and Ministry at the Kool Haus in Toronto back in 2007. They were good. Wild crowd, though!

I was there too! I was the tall guy with long greying hair who was so intent on every note Meshuggah played that I would not relinquish my space in the pit. Very disappointed that they only played about a half hour set. And give me a break, Ministry. I mean I know it was your farewell tour, but I play "Roadhouse Blues" at least twice a month! Also saw Blind Guardian there a couple of years back. LOVE Toronto!

I had totally forgotten about this song until I got into the show Deutschland '83 this winter on Amazon. I remember really liking it. The chorus forms the theme of the show in its US incarnation.

Here is the full song in its English incarnation:

And in its original German:

And in its original German:

I have always liked Neue Deutsche Welle, prefer the less mainstream stuff like D.A.F. and what it inspired like Joy Division and Cabaret Voltaire, and modern musicians that have been influenced like Soft Moon and Helena Hauff. All the post-punk stuff from that era was pretty good.
