Title: How to add an image to your posts.
Post by: Tank on May 16, 2011, 10:50:05 AM
There are two ways to add an image to a post, Hot-linking and from your own image on your own separate image hosting site (like Imageshack).
You can't upload an image to this site from your computer or link to an image on your own computer.

The way you display an image is to put the image location (URL) between the 'img' tags ([img][/img])

Thus the structure is always [img]URL[/img]

Hot-linking

This is often frowned upon as it steals the bandwidth of the site where the image is displayed. This is often not a big issue for large organisations with their own servers but can be a problem for smaller users like personal bloggers who have to pay each time an image is viewed whether it's on their page or is being hot-linked to.

But here is how you do it in Firefox, Internet Explorer should be similar.

Right mouse click on the image you want to show and select copy image location
(in this example http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/49558000/jpg/_49558331_soldiers304in_mod.jpg)

Come back to your post and put the cursor where you want the picture to appear.

Click the 'insert image button' (https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg94.imageshack.us%2Fimg94%2F161%2Fimgnj.gif&hash=14e03d45b477b1fe9e092aca5be781c7b0f77b6c) or type [img][/img]

Put the cursor between the tags and paste in the URL thus

[img]http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/49558000/jpg/_49558331_soldiers304in_mod.jpg[/img]

This will display as shown below

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.bbcimg.co.uk%2Fmedia%2Fimages%2F49558000%2Fjpg%2F_49558331_soldiers304in_mod.jpg&hash=0e643fa1a4f1aabcb2781724716fc60187243ffb)

However some sites don't allow hot-linking and if this is the case some form of message will appear to that effect.
Some sites will divert hot-links to a very rude picture!
So be warned, if you're hot-linking PREVIEW YOUR POST!!!

Hosting your own images.

This requires you open an account with an image host like ImageShack (http://my.imageshack.us/) or Flikr (http://www.flickr.com/), there are other sites of this type. I have used ImageShack and it's OK. Both these sites offer a basic free package which you can extend by paying a subscription. I haven't extended my basic package.

Once you have an account you can copy (upload) images from your computer to the image hosting computer. Once this is done the image host gives you a location (URL) for the image. This is what you put between the [img][/img] tags to display your image on this (or any other) forum.

So I have an image http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/7052/asmo.png

To display it all I have to do is add image tags around it thus (in fact ImageShack has display options and I choose the forum option so it adds the tags for me)

[IMG]http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/7052/asmo.png[/IMG]

And it will display as below

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg823.imageshack.us%2Fimg823%2F7052%2Fasmo.png&hash=75985267820402c65713bb834241de8decef2ac7)

Centring an image

Dead easy just put the [center][/center] tags or click the centre text button (https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg638.imageshack.us%2Fimg638%2F9517%2Fcentera.gif&hash=940d71893c98a2b00f11a0f367d1e57e902513d4) around the image link [img]URL[/img] thus [center][img]URL[/img][/center] displays as

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg823.imageshack.us%2Fimg823%2F7052%2Fasmo.png&hash=75985267820402c65713bb834241de8decef2ac7)

If you are having problems then post your questions here.

Hosting your own images.

In addition to dedicated image hosting services, if you have your own website or blog you can link to any pictures there. I often link to images from my blog rather than uploading them separately to PictureBucket.
To get the URL for an image in a page, right-click on the image and choose to open the image from the drop down menu (wording can vary slightly depending on the browser you're using.)
Then copy what's in the browser's address bar, and paste it between the IMG tags as in Tank's example.

I like Imgur as a host for pictures, you don't need any sort of account just upload a file copy the URL of the image and forget about it.  You can make a free account by I haven't had a reason to so far.

I'm certain I don't.  You know, it always stuns me when someone can't understand getting a harsh reaction from people he's insulted.  As the man of the cloth said, duh.

QuoteNever heard of a 'stink eye' before?

I would describe it as a "you fucking idiot" look.  My cat gave me the stink eye once.  I actually got a picture of it and if I could figure out how to post pictures, I'd show you.

Yeah, I've tried following it several times and just can't make it work.  I figure 6 more tries should do the trick.

Do you have an image host where you upload your pictures to?
Which browser do you use?

re: browsers, I have no idea.  Unless you mean Google?

I have some pictures on Flickr and I've tried uploading them from Flickr to this site without luck.  I'm sure there's just a step I'm missing somewhere.

So your picture starts out like this at Flickr

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg689.imageshack.us%2Fimg689%2F8401%2F11130898.jpg&hash=9b7d3605a1529646a639dde10b64151ae3dd809d)

Note the 'share' tag at the top. Clicking 'share' gives this

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg194.imageshack.us%2Fimg194%2F3440%2F36480283.jpg&hash=230353b6c861c45f543fc7c40ba96df8a26c3923)

Ignore 'Grab the link', open the Grab HTML/BBCode at the bottom of the dialogue box by clicking on it.

You should see

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg607.imageshack.us%2Fimg607%2F6159%2F72494361.jpg&hash=3d6093ebc6af095bad1b02909c0eb55b91f20657)

Select the BBCode option by clicking on the 'radio button' to the left of 'BBCode'.

You now need to copy the text in the box to bring it to your post, it should look something like this.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/29598287@N04/6115610342/][img]http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6184/6115610342_d23c4c4370.jpg[/img][/url]

and it will display like this

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm7.static.flickr.com%2F6184%2F6115610342_d23c4c4370.jpg&hash=adb6abe50c606a185c9c72fc9f12fa39457ae022) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/29598287@N04/6115610342/)
Deirdre on blanket close up (http://www.flickr.com/photos/29598287@N04/6115610342/) by ashenlight55 (http://www.flickr.com/people/29598287@N04/), on Flickr

You'll see there are all kinds of stuff around the picture links etc. that you may not want around it. To just show your picture you need to just find the image details, which I have extracted below.

[img]http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6184/6115610342_d23c4c4370.jpg[/img]

That piece of text displays like this.

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm7.static.flickr.com%2F6184%2F6115610342_d23c4c4370.jpg&hash=adb6abe50c606a185c9c72fc9f12fa39457ae022)

I hope that helps.  ;D

Ask questions if it doesn't!

Please note. Imageshack now limits its free service to 500 images and no animated .gifs.
For $2 a month you get unlimited uploads at 10mb and image and animated .gif files are supported.

Or you could just use photobucket, which is free and supports .gifs.

Notice whos mugshot is in the tutorial?  ;D

That said, I think it is good that we have these tutorials, but I think the threads should be locked (reference only).

The discussion on the subject belongs in a separate, non-sticky post. Just a cosmethic issue.

I use imjur http://imgur.com/?noFlash

I haven't bothered to set up an account, you just go there an upload your pic, you loose control of it but that isn't an issue for me.  I do have a word doc with the links for pics I might want to use again.  It allows png files which like gifs can have transparent backgrounds.  I've noticed some of the non genuine spoons are jpg with a white background.

Seeing as though this is a tutorial some image format basics.
jpg, good for photos, compressed for smaller file size, some loss of quality (lossy) but probably insignificant.
gif limited to 256 colours, not suitable for photos, can be animated and have transparent background.
PNG is like an improved gif which allows for greater colour depth, not really for photos unless small otherwise results in large file size.

You can add 'width' and 'height' to the code, followed by = and a number (I think it refers to the number of pixels). If you add just one of those dimensions it should work too.

For instance,

[img width=300] followed by the image url and [ / img]

You can also add an image by clicking the shortcut button (first button on the left, second row):

The image BBcode will appear:

[img][/img]

Just paste the image link in between [ img ] and [ /img], like this:

[img]https://i.imgur.com/Ciuy7v8.png[/img]

Make sure the link is a proper image format such as .png, .jpg, .gif etc., or it won't work!

The only option I have is to use "quick reply" which has no bulletin board or smiley choices.   Where-how do I find the smileys and buttons?

I have looked all over the screen to find some sort of option to go to a regular post.   Is my Firefox/Win10 setup somehow making me look, or actually be, stupid.  Firefox does block certain elements but that sort of thing is beyond my pay grade.  Thus I am moved to plead for help from one or more of my virtual friends.  The change of available options began when the format was redesigned.

I know that the Gods are out to get me and make it ever more evident that I have diminished capacity. (probably so, but curiously, I can still do quadratic equations and confidently calculate fluid dynamic physics problems. But I can not seem to post a freaking picture. )

I can also do stupid shit in my workshop. Like when I had a kickback from the table saw that involved a lot of blood and eight stitches in my left hand on account of a flying piece of thin plywood ejected from the saw at about 105 feet per second. Only about 72 MPH or 115Kmph.   I might show you a picture of the hand if I ever learn to post a picture. ................. Never mind the mangled paw is all healed now.

Do you not see the little green box with the rounded corners (with a "+" in it) at the bottom right of people's posts? Are you using the old forum skin? I don't see a "quick reply" button, myself.

OK, I went to "look and layout" and discovered that I have the "quick reply" turned off by default. Maybe go in and change that. Are you using a cell phone? It might be a limitation of the sw that gets a cell phone usable here. Pure conjecture on my part.

I will post some pix as time goes by.  My pictures will be primitive compared to the brilliant photographs that some of our HAFers share.  I will use (try to use) pix to illustrate some sort of idea only.

Oddly, in the past dark ages, I was a photography enthusiast with a good darkroom and have spent a lot of time with film.  The new digital method is light years ahead of anything that I might have done with film.  Oh well I still have some decent, for its day, 35 mm cameras and lens and filters and all that kind of now useless goodies.  I need that stuff like I need a paper ass.

My area of interest was mostly in high contrast B&W.  I was disappointed to learn that Ansel Adams I ain't. What the hell, I even had a huge view camera and a big 4x5 Speed Graphic. My damned I phone can now take better pictures.  All that was fun while it lasted.

Every picture has worth. It captures a story and tells a story of the person behind the camera. Can't wait to see more  :)

I did the same, Icarus. Yes, one of the people I tried to emulate was indeed the great Ansel Adams; I even adopted his Zone System, as I am sure you did as well, but to no avail! I remained a bumbling amateur.

Help!  I am trying to learn to post photos from my IPhone using Imageshack.  I know how to upload to the server, but I can't get the hang of copying the URL on the uploaded photo so I am post it on the forum.  It has a bunch of numbers, and then it goes to ..., meaning there are more numbers, but I can seem to get to those numbers to copy them.  Without that, I don't have the whole URL.  Anybody use Imageshack with an IPhone?
