wrath and dark clouds gather force.

I took a long pole
And shoved it up this bloke's arse.

A British schoolgirl, Grace Starkey, from Stroud, a market town I know well not far from where I live, is the first non-Japanese to win in the English section of a major haiku competition in Japan.

QuoteGracie, who is 14, beat 18,247 other entries to win the English category in the 28th Ito En Oi Ocha New Haiku Contest, which attracts almost two million entries.

It seems there have been other haikus written in English, but all by Japanese poets.

Her entry was:

Freshly mown grass
clinging to my shoes
my muddled thoughts

Her haiku does not follow the traditional pattern, but it seems that content can win over form, a poet commented that it would resonate with the Japanese mind. It obviously did!

I will admit that I have trouble with this form of poetry but that does not prevent me appreciating her acheivement.
Tomorrow is precious, don't ruin it by fouling up today.
