Title: Things we might like to add on HAF.
Post by: Guardian85 on October 11, 2015, 08:04:38 PM
I, on the advice of Tank, am starting this thread as a sort of suggestion box for things we might like to add or remove or change from the site.
Hopefully this can serve as inspiration for our moderators and resident tech head and lead to a better site.

To start things off I would suggest we add nationality to the personal information panel (P.I.M.P. ?)that comes with every post you make. Just to make it easier for people to remember who and where people are. Maybe just a little flag under the line for gender.

Not sure I like the idea of showing how stupid estadounidenses are every time I post a random thought.

Take it as inspiration to not post as stupidly, then.  ;D

I think the only person who's stupid here is me, so you're safe.   ;)

I would like that a better smiley pack be added to this forum, or keep the ones we have but add more. It's not the most important or pressing thing to request but it would be nice to be able to express oneself nonverbally without having to google an emoticon. [/feeling lazy]   :P

I like the idea of adding the flag below each of our avatars, especially seeing how diverse we are here. I say pretty please can we haz some flags?

Legend:
Can do/will do
Might do
Cannot/will not do

Nationality flag/field - easy to implement, but might interfere with future upgrades. Will have to look into that.

Smiley pack - we will see what we can dig up. A perfectly harmless fix that.

How do people feel about like/dislike buttons?

If it's à la Facebook where members can like (or maybe dislike) posts then I don't see the harm in it as long as it isn't anonymous.

I've been on a big forum where a props system was implemented and it just turned into a popularity contest where members with the most 'likes' were seen as the most credible, even if some were not. Some members would compete for brownie points and I'd assume some with views that opposed the majority wouldn't express themselves for fear of getting negative props or dislikes. :-X Groupthink was rampant.
Not saying that would happen on this forum, the circumstances may be different, I just don't like the props idea too much.  :-\

Like/dislike buttons - The forum has a karma system that can be implemented and used. In stead of a specific post, it assigns "likes" and "dislikes" to the individual user. The like system would only be really useful if one could search for most liked posts, topics, members, etc, but that would be a highly intrusive mod. Unlikely to implement, but will look into it.

We do, of course, accept suggestions for smiley packs, but do keep in mind that in order to be unobtrusive, they cannot exceed a certain size. I'd say the default smilies on this board are about right in that regard. We may add a few larger smileys, like the popcorn one, but the middle finger smiley is many thousand square pixels too large.

I only used teh larger, many pixel sized middle finger smiley for emphasis. A normal pixel size one would be good, I would also think a smiley giving the finger with both hands would be quite the necessity here as well, along with one mooning (Pulling it's pants down and showing its arse).

I think I have mentioned this here before, but what about adding code that would allow us to hide text or images? I think this would be a useful tool when you are quoting large or multiple posts (Or pasting large bodies of text), as well as for hiding images that might be NSF or for hiding gifs which are difficult for some smaller devices, phones, pads, etc...to download.

I think this would clean up the threads quite a bit as well...and you could make it more or less mandatory (Except maybe in certain threads) that all images or gifs be hidden texted, with a brief description of what is hidden underneath.

"Spoiler" bb-tag and functionality only affects parts of the engine. Relatively few lines of code, can be upgraded around and/or over. This will be implemented.

I suggest you save a version on your computer, just in case.

I did save a version of it on my computer, just in case, but I lost it there as well. (This is before I learned about Google Drive, now I find everything, from anywhere.)  ;)

I thought about asking Eric V Arachnid, nicely, but I haven't seen him around much lately, so I didn't know if I should bother him with it.:(  As you can see, I don't have a problem bothering

I'm surprised that Asmo is trying to propagate the forum with the old content which is a faff when we could have just done a do-over as the backup seems to be outdated.

The age of the last backup is not the problem. In fact, the image of the DB from the day HAF went down "exists".

I was watching from a distance like a creep. I was waiting for the forum to either get cleaned up a bit more or reboot (still think that is the best option as Asmo has life to deal with), neither happened so just thought I may as well sign in otherwise the forum won't become active again.

Don't do Facebook. Did it when it was in University mode and hated it back then.

Seems to have got stuck in "Ask HAF", not quite what I was thinking of . . .

I thought it would be good to have "Misc..." as a category under "General", sonething as a place for "Things that don't seem to fit anywhere else."

Would it be possible/desirable to have some sort of limited news feed to spark discussion?
Is AI input possible?
Marcus wasn't artificial nor intelligent, yet he did spawn some discussion.
Even the present troubled mind spammer has got some replies.

I might start a rolling In The News Thread where stuff can just be pasted.
I know inertia prevents me from me starting new threads, ah that's not worth a new thread, I think I'll have a snooze.

I know inertia prevents me from me starting new threads, ah that's not worth a new thread, I think I'll have a snooze.
It is possible to integrate news feeds from some aggregators, though it would require some quality control. What kind of news, from where, etc.

I kinda' suck at eating them Tacos. A lot tends to end up on the front of my shirt. :(

To a lesser degree, it also applies to burgers and other such "sandwiched" nonsense which is too big or too crumbly to reliably bite into.

Now, rolls. Rolls be proper food. You can has spring rolls and burritos and wraps and even shishkebabs rolled into a cylinder of more-or-less bite-sized proportions. :smilenod:

This thread has wandered a bit, so here goes. I used to eat food so spicy that my wife wouldn't even sit at the same table with me, because of her watering eyes. Now, I can't even have tomatoes or onions...and peppermint? WTF!?

BoT, I guess I'd like tuna fish sandwiches on HAF...

They're better on rye, IMO.
