It appears we may get a chance to see just how "much better for the gays" Donald Trump really is.

"GOP Senators To Re-Introduce Anti-Gay 'Religious Freedom' Bill Next Year" | TPM

QuoteThe Republican sponsors of a so-called "religious freedom" bill plan on re-introducing the legislation next year in the hopes that Donald Trump's election will boost chances for the bill to be signed into law, Buzzfeed News reported.

The bill, the First Amendment Defense Act, would ban the federal government from revoking tax exemptions from or denying grants to individuals or corporations with religious or "moral" beliefs opposing same-sex marriage.

[. . .]

During the presidential campaign, Trump pledged to sign the legislation "to protect the deeply held religious beliefs of Catholics and the beliefs of Americans of all faiths."
"Religion is fundamentally opposed to everything I hold in veneration — courage, clear thinking, honesty, fairness, and above all, love of the truth."

What? Just for same sex marriage? It seems like an opportunity to institutionalize way more religious dogma that they want. Seems like a missed opportunity almost.

They still have at least two years, and likely four... hopefully not six to eight...

They're working on it. Don't be so impatient!

"Trump and the Republicans Are Redefining 'Religious Freedom' to Favor Christians" | New Republic

QuoteThe House Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing Thursday on "The State of Religious Liberty in America," featuring three GOP witnesses: Kim Colby, director of the Center for Law and Religious Freedom at the Christian Legal Society, which in 2010 argued unsuccessfully at the Supreme Court that one of its public law school chapters should receive university recognition and funding while excluding gay students; Hannah Smith, senior counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which The American Prospect dubbed "the leading advocate for corporations' religious rights" after its central work on the Burwell v. Hobby Lobby case; and Casey Mattox, senior counsel for the Center for Academic Freedom at the Alliance Defending Freedom, whose leading legal role in a host of socially conservative causes over the decades led Think Progress to call it "The 800-Pound Gorilla Of The Christian Right."

Given this lineup, it's safe to assume the hearing will resemble previous ones on the subject, where Republicans have argued that religious freedom is under unprecedented attack in the United States. What they'll really be arguing for, though, is the right to use religious beliefs as a license to discriminate, and to provide special protections for Christians that fly in the face of the First Amendment.

Now, what was the title of that TV series, back in the early 70s I think, where America was "policed" by a sort of inquisition - bit like the Saudi religious police, but then some?

The Christians are at it again in South Dakota. This time they lost.  A science bill in the states senate  education committee was recently defeated.  The bill would have allowed teachers to essentially teach anything they want as science as long as they use certain language.

There are three other bills in state legislatures that would allow science denial in the class rooms.   Indiana senate resolution 17, Oklahoma senate bill 393, Texas house bill 1485. At least 60 "academic freedom" bills- which permit teachers to paint established science as controversial.  Those bills have been filed all over the country. Louisiana passed one in 2008. Tennessee did the same in 2012

Educational groups all over the country are fighting back. ....National Science Teachers Association, National Association Of Biology Teachers, National Association of Geoscience Teachers, National Center for science Education, and American Institute of Biological Sciences....... If you have any capacity for doing so, please get behind any or all of these organizations and push.

Latest small scale local news here in Central Florida...... eight year old kid misses his school bus to go home. He can take a second bus, later, that travels the same basic route. Kid is concerned that he will arrive home later than usual. He tells the lady bus driver that he is concerned that his two mommies might be worried about him being late. ......Bus driver tells the kid that he is going to hell and so are his two mommies because god does not like lesbians or the children of lesbians. They are all going to hell! Shit has hit the fan. It seems that the evil lesbians are damned good people who care much for their child and they are not going to allow any guilt trips for their kid.  Bus driver is a Jehovah Witness and is in deep trouble as she should be for fucking with the little persons emotional tranquility.

We will see how this plays out but I fear that the Jesus people...or Jehovah people as the case may be....will hide behind the first amendment or some other rationale that allows them the liberty of messing with the head of an innocent little child. I will bet a chicken dinner that the two mommies are more  socially responsible than the dipshit bus driver.

American Christofascists think they have a good chance to push their agenda, now that there's a buffoon who they think will listen to them in the White House.

"Trump's Dominionist Prayer Warriors Organizing To Build Christian Nation" | Right Wing Watch

QuoteThe dominionist prayer warriors of POTUS Shield, a project launched by Trump-supporting "apostles" and "prophets" immediately after his election victory, met in Ohio last week to further their plans to take full advantage of their new high-level access. Among their goals: "sweeping" the federal courts of any judges whose rulings are not to their liking, ending abortion, getting rid of marriage equality for same-sex couples, bringing "official" prayer and Bible reading into the nation's schools, and making America the Christian nation they believe it was meant to be.

I shudder after looking at that link from Recusant.  It is well that we can identify the enemy.

I feel that see elements of the America of "The Handmaid's Tale" in there.
