Well I'm atheist and I can prove it

I wanted to get more involved in the atheist community, thus Google was beckoned unto.
I do a lot of graphic design with atheist themes, I'll post some links once I have made a few posts on this board. (Don't want to be a spammer, that would be lame).
My view has lots of question for religious people, an example is "why eternal life that always was, 80-90 years not eternal, then eternal again." or, from Dawkins, "what are the criteria for deciding what in the Bible is true and what is some kind of metaphor? And why does it change, less and less is preached as literal"

My dream is simple, an Atheist president in my lifetime. We haven't had one since Adams, although i partially suspect Obama of being a closet Atheist.

A few other words about me, I run two small businesses, a web and photo company, and an atheist clothing company. I have a degree in journalism from U of Arizona, I'm 25 and dying to get out of my parents house. Again.

Does your thread title mean that you can prove there's no God, or that you can prove you're an atheist?

Hello and welcome to HAF, Alan Fullmer.  I take it that the proofs of your atheism are your questions and your atheist clothing company.  Check.

I'm not clear on the meaning of your first question: "why eternal life that always was, 80-90 years not eternal, then eternal again." Are you talking about the Biblical idea that the "Fall of Man" brought death into the world?  If you are, the Christian has a pat answer for you, the first section of which I've already mentioned.  As for the second question, well the good Christian just prays to their god for guidance.  Surely you don't expect any sort of empirical basis for any of this stuff from them.  If I were Christian, I wouldn't find your questions troubling or hard to answer at all.  It's not that they aren't good questions, it's that apologists and theologians have had centuries to construct an impressive edifice of twaddle to stand against inquiries of this sort.  Once you accept Jesus as your personal savior, the intellectual storm-troopers of Christianity will provide you with pretty much all of the defenses against backsliding and doubt that you'll ever need.  As long as you trust them and refuse to accept any other viewpoint as possibly valid.  However, I encourage you to keep it up with the questions.

I don't think that the US has ever had an openly atheist president.  I suppose that it depends on how one were to define the term.  Some modern Fundamentalists view Unitarianism (Adams's religious affiliation) as atheism, so I suppose that a few of them would agree with you.  Probably not though, since for the most part they consider all of the founding fathers of the country to have been devout Christians, the reality of history be damned.  I think that actually Jefferson was closer to atheism than Adams, and even he was a Deist and a regular church-goer.  I think that if President Obama is not actually Christian, he's privately most likely to be an agnostic or some variety of Deist, rather than an atheist.  His willingness to compromise and cave in to the Republicans on so many important issues, not to mention his moderate (not liberal nor socialist, despite the ravings of wingnuts) stance seems to indicate an overall approach to issues which would be much more in keeping with the agnostic position. I'm not saying that agnostics are wishy-washy, but that they are more open to seeing the possibility of validity on either side of the religion question than atheists, in my opinion.  The candidate Obama used certain rhetoric to energize the liberal base, but he was always careful to keep his actual position firmly centrist.  Personally, I'm willing to take him at his word that he's a Christian.  It would surprise me very much if we were to ever learn otherwise.

I wish you the best of luck with your two businesses, and with your career in journalism, should you choose to pursue it.  I hope you enjoy your time reading and posting here.
