Paul Henry Thiry, Baron d'Holbach, was born in December 1723, in Edesheim, Rhine Palatinate, Germany, but was raised in Paris by his uncle, Franciscus Adam d'Holbach.  He attended the University of Holland between the years of 1744 and 1749.  He died in June 1789, in Paris.  He is notable today for his two lengthy atheist diatribes, extrended rants that raise every conceivable objection to theism with passion and intelligence, both of which are still in print today:

To anyone on the fence regarding atheism, or having a scholarly interest in atheism's history, or desirous of inspirational reading to straighten one's spine on challenging days, I recommend the above.  Don't look for humor, storytelling, or subtlety, however.  These are baseball bats to the skull.

If religions were TV channels atheism is turning the TV off.
"Religion is a culture of faith; science is a culture of doubt." ― Richard P. Feynman
'It is said that your life flashes before your eyes just before you die. That is true, it's called Life.' - Terry Pratchett
Remember, your inability to grasp science is not a valid argument against it.
