Single Electron Reader Opens Path for Quantum Computing

QuoteScienceDaily (Sep. 29, 2010) â€" A team led by engineers and physicists at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia, have developed one of the key building blocks needed to make a quantum computer using silicon: a "single electron reader."

Joking aside. The single electron-bit (ebit) has been a goal of material and computing science for as long as I can remember. Mainly because it has been perceived as a fundamental limit to how small you can make a memory device. At the moment the support circuitry on the chip makes the ebit memory cell way bigger than that of a conventional dynamic RAM cell but the fact that the principals are now know will spur on development again.

Bumping this one up to date a bit, to where quantum computing is now a reality. You may be quite routinely talking to a quantum computer in the not too distant future.

Tomorrow is precious, don't ruin it by fouling up today.
