Being of that species I can only say it can be useful, frustrating and amusing all at once.
Some specialists get annoyed with generalists outsude of their discipline but, st the very keast, it gives one an "appreviation" of many fields. As a sales coordinator, writing specifications for complete sensor/data logging ststems I never knew whether the next call would involve the rectal temperatures of cows, air velocity at a thousand points in a wind tunnel, the entire environment in and around a greenhouse complex, mass spectroscopy of beer . . .
My Joatness gave me the ability to ask half intelligent questions even of the details of the subject where new to me. This often ellicited info that the other took as given, so well known in his or her disciipline it got glossed over. Sometimes gave them a new perspective!
Later, as a general purpose development lab tech in industry it scored agsin.

I agree, but it only scores in the right place. I was "looked down on" and passed over for promotion in one job because, unlike the others, I had no formal qualifications. Initually in that job I doubled my salary, through merit increases and promotions, in four years. Then the boss retired and I was told, by the new man (wno had been No 2) that I was not going to get further promotion or pay rises about standard unless I got letters after my name. My actual achievemrnts counted for nothing, he wanted an impressive list of lettered people in the literature. I found another job (the sales coordinator one).
The job agency I used took one look at my resumė and, said, basically, "What the hell do I do with you, where do I point you!?" The sales job came up the next day...
It seems to becoming, increasingly, a world of specialists, glad I am retired.
I would rather be a multidimensional (Renaissance) man than a one-dimensional one.
This thread reminds me of the following definitions ;D
A Specialist knows more and more about less and less until he knows absolutely everything about nothing.
A Generalist knows less and less about more and more until he knows absolutely nothing about everything.
It's a family trait, I think, that me and my father and both jacks and kings, but not aces.
We learn all kinds of different stuff but it all amounts to what field we are in. My Dad always did industrial stuff so he knows a lot about things from fabrication to electrical work to working in an oil field.
I've been the same way but I seem to be going in the direction of fitness, athletics, ect.
