Title: Ecurb's Travels
Post by: Ecurb Noselrub on July 01, 2016, 01:11:46 AM
Sorry I'm posting so much tonight.  Tomorrow my mujer and I leave for Montana, where we will rent a car and drive into Alberta and BC, Canada.  Trying to beat the heat in Texas.  When I land it in Montana, it will be my 50th state.  I will have been to every state in the USA, plus all 254 counties in Texas, and after the trip I'll have visited 4 Canadian provinces, 6 Mexican states, and about 25 countries.

Next year we are doing a Viking river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest - my only new country there will be Hungary.  My bucket list is looming larger - I want to see as much of the world as I can before I check out.  We'll be gone two weeks.  Cheers.

One week until my super vacation.  My wife and I are flying business class (United Polaris) from Houston to Amsterdam.  Two nights there, then boarding a Viking cruise ship going down the Rhine, to the Main, then on a canal to the Danube, and finally ending up in Budapest, Hungary.  Anyway, 15 days on the boat, two in Amsterdam and an extra night in Budapest. Pulling out all the stops.  5 countries total: Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia (just passing through Bratislava without stopping), and Hungary.  I've never been to Slovakia or Hungary, so that's new.  One day trip to Munich when we stop at Regensburg, Germany. Never been there before.  I see lots of beer and wine in my future. We bought the drinking package, so I have my work cut out for me to make sure Viking loses money on me.  Probably not possible.

We are coming home on Lufthansa, also business class.  I'm totally disconnecting from work for a total of 19 days, including one night I'm spending in Houston. I'll learn that I can live without them, and they'll learn they can live without me. Hope I have a job when I get back.  I'm leaving after work on the 27th, so you won't hear from me until July 17.  But I'll try to post some photos when I get back.

That sounds like a wonderful itinerary. I have been to all those places, but somehow felt quite at home in Regensburg (not because of the Nazi connections!). I was stranded in Budapest once for 2 days, because the airport was closed due to snow. Another time I was lucky enough to be in Munich one year for the Oktoberfest, which I can recommend. I really love Munich -  try to visit the excellent Science Museum.

Have a great time!

Cologne is a beautiful city.  There's even a chocolate museum which gives free samples of very good chocolate.

That's probably too far for you to go for a beer.  Miltenburg is the stop after Koblenz.  If you want to meet, let me know and I'll give you the dates for each.

So I was on the forum earlier this afternoon, and I left a post here in this very thread, and now I don't see it...very strange.

Anyway, I think what I posted earlier went something like this, "Sounds like a wonderful trip you have planned Bruce, I'm very envious of you, but do hope you have a good time. Good luck trying to outdoing the Vikings, and please send me a postcard from Budapest."

(I'll PM you my address, because if I posted it here who knows what type of mail I would receive from you godless heathens)

One post card from Budapest coming up, but that's my last stop, so I'll probably be home by the time you receive it!

Yes, not sure exactly why they skipped it - must have to do with necessary distances they want to travel every day, and they have to stop at Cologne to let us see the cathedral.  Anyway, I'll drink a beer in your honor as we pass Frankfurt.

Pretty cool huh?

Looks like a lovely place doesn't it, hope he had a good time in his travels. (I would be lying if I said I wasn't jealous a bit)

Would homemade dinner rolls be sufficient?  Or does it need to be something more substantial, like a casserole or pie?

Arturo, I'm sorry as I'm not sure why you thought I was Mexican, maybe cuz' I can habla some espanol, or maybe because my wife is from Honduras?
Of course her being Honduran has resulted in my kids being half-beaners. 8) (Which is how they describe themselves, not my words... I like to refer to them with as a crazy mix of salsa and sauerkraut) 8)

I'm pretty sure you said you were Mexican. I asked Magdalena if she was Mexican (or something like that) and you brought it up that you were.

Maybe I did get it mixed up because of your wife or because your previous name had spanish in it. It wouldn't be the first time I misremembered something.

If I say when, it's hardly unannounced is it?  Besides, I want to check with Mags and Joe and anyone else in So Cal.  I think it will be more interesting if we descend in a swarm.

I see it's a Facebook post. The issue you're having could be due to a couple of things:

- if it's one of your own, are your settings set to 'private' or 'only friends may visualise photos'?

- did you click on the image before copying the image address?

If you answered 'no' to the first and 'yes' to the second, how about downloading the image and uploading it to another image hosting service such as imgur, photobucket or tinypic?

I can recommend imgur -- I went over to them when flickr started giving me problems and imgur is super user friendly.

My wife will try photobucket.  For me all those things are a pain in the ass.  Thanks!!!!

I set it to public and it still will not let me post.

My wife will try photobucket.  For me all those things are a pain in the ass.  Thanks!!!!

Tried photobucket.  Not working for me.  I'm cursed.

If you want to see my photos, let me know and I'll give you my FB info.

Ok we can do it. This is a picture from "Stop The Wall" notice it has .jpg part way through it. I did this by looking at the image in the album. Then clicking 'view image' on the right mouse button menu and then copy/paste the URL between the image tags.

Thanks, Tank, those of us with no face-in-the-book suffer a slight disadvantage (but one I am usually very happy to put up with!)

Just look up Bruce Burleson from Belton, Texas on Facebook.  That's me.  Anyone interested can look.  The photos start with crooked houses in Amsterdam.  Anything before that is from before.  I'll be posting more throughout the day.  If anyone can figure out how to put them on the forum, have at it.  As I've told Tank, I do not get the "view image" option when I right click on the image, so I can't come up with a URL.  Sorry for the hassle.

The architecture is stupendous but the water level looks pretty high. There is going to big trouble if that kid ever takes his thumb out of the dike.

Heading out for the Big Bend area of Texas in the morning. Going to enjoy the beautiful Rio Grande border area there before Trump destroys it with a stupid wall.  Also going to visit some fantastic restaurants in Marfa, Alpine and Marathon.  May even cross the river into Mexico at Boquillas for a cold beer and a taco.  I'll post pics on Facebook.

July 1-7 this year we are traveling to Wales.  We will fly from Houston to London, then take a nice taxi ride all the way to Hay-on-Wye, just over the Welsh border.  There we have rented an apartment for the week. My wife will explore the many book stores in the village, and I will explore the many pubs. I also plan to hike in Brecon Beacons National Park nearby and canoe on the Wye River.  Then taxi back to Heathrow for the flight home.  The taxi is a bit pricey, but I don't want to bother with renting a car and driving on the wrong side of the road, or riding an crowded, uncomfortable bus.  Anyone near Hay?  Stop by and I'll buy you a pint.

The Burleson clan immigrated to America from Wales in the 1700's, so in a way I'm coming home.  They were actually from Caerleon, near Cardiff, but close enough.

Sorry, timing's all wrong.  However, almost exactly two years ago I visited LLanafen via Builth Wells (quite close to Hay-on-Wye) a very small village that my father and uncle were evacuated to during WWII.  The village has a church and a pub, the Red Lion, and that's about it.  Had a lovely meal at the Red Lion, can thoroughly recommend it.
