Title: Recommend me some podcasts...
Post by: Claireliontamer on May 19, 2017, 06:56:07 PM
As the title suggests I'm looking for some new podcasts to listen to. I'll listen to most topics if they're well made.

I really like SGU http://www.theskepticsguide.org/ they talk about all kinds of science things and often go into explaining the reality behind headline grabbing "science" articles.

I also like pseuodopod http://pseudopod.org/ for it's horror stories.

Also, for news I like BBC's Global News Podcast http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02nq0gn/episodes/downloads They also have a few more. It's a much better news source than the big US networks.

Welcome to Night Vale http://www.welcometonightvale.com/ is a good humor/horror/sci fi podcast. It got very popular pretty quickly.

I listen to a lot of podcasts, but those are some of my favorites that I think have a higher chance of appealing to others.

Thanks Davin.  I listen to them mainly when I can't sleep so am not sure the horror ones are a good idea but I've added SGU and the BBC to my list.  I use a really good app called castbox to listen, I recommend it if you listen a lot.

I listen to the "Joe Rogan Experience". He's not a genius or anything but occasionally he has some interesting characters. You can watch them on YouTube or he has a website you can download them somewhere. https://www.youtube.com/user/PowerfulJRE

Good to see you Claire!
Lately I've been listening to Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People. It's a comedian named Chris Gethard who takes a phone call from an anonymous person on every podcast and talks to them for an hour. He's not allowed to hang up, and they just talk about whatever the caller wants. It's been really fascinating, sometimes painful, always interesting.
Also listen to This American Life and occasionally Radiolab, which are really just two radio programs on National Public Radio in podcast form.

I am not much of a podcasty person but I had occassion to link to BBC's "Four Thought", to xSP. You probably know of these, Claire, but I thought them worth mention if only for others.

These are 15 minute talks on a wide range of subjects that usually pack a full load into that short time. The one I pointed xSP at involved the effects of parents spending more time gazing at a screen than interacting with their babies - and the possible effects of this later. Doing this at home with the TV has been common for years but smartphones and tablets have spread this "non-interaction with kids" to travel etc.

Thank you for the other suggestions.  I'll look up Joe Rogan and the Beautiful Stories one.

I do already subscribe to a lot of the Radio 4 ones but Four Thought isn't on my list though so I'll add it in.

Did you listen to S-Town? If you didn't, drop whatever you're doing right on its time wasting ass (unless its taking care of your daughter, obvs) and GO LISTEN.

For any history fans, especially those who like historical myths and movies debunked, with a touch of malicious fun, I can reccomend Paul Sinha's Historical Revision (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07d7hhc)

This is just the latest series.

If you're looking for fiction, there's lots out there...

Wormwood was a great arcane mystery show - all episodes are here:

Pendant has a number of shows running, with new episodes all the time:

Dream Realm has fewer shows, but they're quirky fun:

Season 1 of In the Dark was really good. Here's the description from the website:
For 27 years, the investigation into the abduction of Jacob Wetterling in rural Minnesota yielded no answers. Reporter Madeleine Baran reveals how law enforcement mishandled one of the most notorious child abductions in the country and how those failures fueled national anxiety about stranger danger, led to the nation's sex-offender registries and raise questions about crime-solving effectiveness and accountability.

Not podcasts - BBC iPlayer

Bettany Hughes series' "The ideas that made us" on BBC Radio 4

15 minutes talks on concepts like technology, hubris, nemesis and others over the various series.

Links to other, similar, things.

BBC iPlayer again.

Neil MacGregor, once Director of the British Museum and writer/presenter of "100 Things That Changed the World" (akso recommended), has a new series, "Living With the Gods", a story of mankind's mythical mind.

The first one is about The Lion Man, found in a Gernan cave, a superb mamoth ivory statuette of a man with the head of a lion - something that never existed in reality but which, 35 - 40 000 years ago a person was willing to spend up to 400 hours carving, with only stones as tools. Why?

These are short progs ideal for those odd idle moments.

BBC comedy, "Andy Hamilton sort of remembers", one of the funniest men on British TV  and radio.

Latest one involved how to scare off a grizzly, his wife being chased by a randy dolphin and why the attitude difference between alligators and crocodiles is important if all you have is a rolled up newspaper.

I liked it, it's about a long term study of lizard behaviour.
Could be some anthropomorphism going on, confusion interpreted as grief?
Maybe our grief on loss of a life partner is 52.37% confusion
Maybe so italics me.
I saw a pair of similar lizards basking out in the afternoon sun, they do look sweet together.

Still wishing there was a :touge-in-cheek: emoji!

On the emoji front there are getting to many, too small on the tablet screen for me to easily find the one I want out of similar looking ones. Expanding the screen does not allow moving it around, as is usual. I have to expand quarter by quarter.

An excuse for what, may I ask?

If it's too darn little for me to see clearly I cannot be blamed for the effect of age on my sight in not being able to differentiate between similar colour-shape combinations. The whole Internet is, for some of us old fogies, becoming a triumph of style over practicality! May look pretty in 10p red on black but I take one look and go elsewhere. Ditto small font, spidery grey, or even black, on white on sites that do not allow expansion.

Sites intended for keen eyed youth - fair enough, though they sometimes apply to me (young at heart as I am) as well. Political and factual sites should really ensure their output is optimal for all. I do not go off muttering, "... bunch of wankers ..." due to their output but due to their egotistical presentation style. No matter how good and clever something is if part of your sighted (more or less) audience cannot even access it without strain or extra technology (magnifying lens) it is a bit of a failure . . .

QuoteHe was a friend of Charles Darwin. He had correspondence with Michael Faraday. He was a student at Cambridge University and remained there finally becoming Vice Chancellor. William Whewell the polymath, wrote on geology, astronomy and international law and much more. He coined much of the terminology commonly used in science today, such as osmosis, conductivity, and ion. He even invented the word scientist. And amazingly, in what was the first time people not trained in science were encouraged to help gather data, he arranged for volunteers in 650 towns, in 9 nations and colonies to collect hundreds of thousands of observations about tides which helped Britain dominate global sea trade. But few people have heard of William Whewell. Well that's about to change as Sharon Carleton presents this Science Show tracing William Whewell's life and achievements.

This is from the latest episode of the science show, I'll link the main page, other things may be of interest.

Quote'Bird brain' is sometimes used as an insult. But maybe it is really a compliment! They pack a lot in to their tiny heads. And they have powers we don't come close to understanding. Such as how some species manage to fly from one side of the Earth to the other, and hit a target, be it a beach, or an exact nest. Then physically, how do they cover such immense distances? Now we know some birds are learning before emerging from the egg. Birds continue to fascinate. And you'll be fascinated with this discussion on all things avian recorded at Womad in March 2018.

I was tempted to put this one in the Philosophy slot . . .

This is an "imaginary" conversation using archive material for Douglas' responses. After a very short time I forgot the "artificiality" of the technique and got lost in Douglas' vision.

It's only 15 minutes but sort of infinite.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07pj826

QuoteRobbie Stamp/Douglas Adams
Robbie Stamp has an imagined conversation with his late business partner and friend, Douglas Adams.

The last time Robbie talked with Douglas for real was the day before the author's sudden and unexpected death in 2001. He admits to constantly chatting to Douglas in his head since then - but this edition of Unforgettable is the first time he hears Adams respond in his own words.

In a moving interaction between the living and the archive, the subjects range from the new internet, via the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, to the benefits of seeing the world from the point of view of someone else, or even a different species.

Robbie explains how interested Douglas Adams would have been in the technological hardware and software which allows this new conversation to happen, and imagines the fun he would have had with it.

[ ...]

The guest has no advance knowledge of the excerpts, and the conversation can take unexpected turns, occasionally leading to some emotionally charged interchanges, as living voices engage with those preserved in the archive.

Before I iffered history with humour, this time it's policing with humour:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bkv4f5

QuotePass the Person
It's a Fair Cop, Series 4
Experienced police officer and comedian Alfie Moore with the fourth episode in the current series. 'Pass the Person' deals with the very sensitive issue of how the police deals with people with mental health problems and what they can do if there's a possibility they may harm themselves. When does 'protection' become 'intrusion'. Few could manage to handle this very serious and troubling subject with humour, but Alfie's compassion and genuine concern for those involved means that he can.

As usual Alfie asks his audience what they would have done in his shoes and hears some of their own true stories.

Irreverant but actually full of fact.
