I guess if you want examples, nordic countries which are the most secular, and contain the least number of theists, also rank high in high cultures of life, that is, the least number of murders, crimes and abortions. Don't know if there's a causal factor or correlation there though.

Religion is an excellent control mechanism, especially since it deals with death and annihilation. Whenever I see their talk I think...Machiavelli's Prince on steroids...
