Or one can 'crop' (cut to size) part of an image to get the desired 'form factor' effect.

If you have a reasonably recent smart phone see if it has a panorama shot function.

It's not a panoramic photo. Like Chris said, it's cropped down for that aspect ratio.

Excellent colours. You caught it at exactly the right time, which is sometimes difficult, because the effect can change within a few seconds.

Very true. There were 28 other photos of that sunset on my camera. It took a lot of fiddling with the exposure compensation and getting it right at just that moment. That moment was the last burst before the sky turned dull amber and the water was obscured in shadow from the trees on the other side of the river. It's a weird spot.

Quite a few people commented on the lavender and purple hues the sky had that afternoon. Many of them tried to photograph it with their phones but a cell camera can't quite make sense of that sort of color pattern.
