New gene variants reveal the evolution of human skin color

QuoteMost people associate Africans with dark skin. But different groups of people in Africa have almost every skin color on the planet, from deepest black in the Dinka of South Sudan to beige in the San of South Africa. Now, researchers have discovered a handful of new gene variants responsible for this palette of tones.

The study, published online this week in Science, traces the evolution of these genes and how they traveled around the world. While the dark skin of some Pacific Islanders can be traced to Africa, gene variants from Eurasia also seem to have made their way back to Africa. And surprisingly, some of the mutations responsible for lighter skin in Europeans turn out to have an ancient African origin.

"This is really a landmark study of skin color diversity," says geneticist Greg Barsh of the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville, Alabama....

There seems to be a kind of irony in an Alabama instituion reinforcing the concept that we are all really "black" under the skin . . .

No, they're not.  :smileshake:
Some racists probably believe they come from that white boy, their lord and savior, Jesus Christ.
Wait, he was Palestinian, wasn't he?  :notsure:

Either way, the racist pray to a middle eastern man.
Are they aware of this?  :eyebrow: You know--Considering how much they hate anyone who's not "white."

I've seen those paintings of a blond haired, blue eyed Jesus Christ. The racists would still be praying to a blond haired, blue eyed Middle Eastern man.

JC was actually a Scandinavian. Everyone knows that.

Aryan? (Though that was a language group rather than a racisl type otiginally.)

Obviously.
Seriously though, that is something my mother said in earnest.

I was brought up Mormon, and they have this very specific "inspired" version of Jesus. I'm sure you've seen it. Apparently many believe that the original conception of this light haired, white skinned, blue eyed Jesus was inspired by the holy ghost to give us an accurate image of what Jesus really looked like. I'm not sure if  that is official church lore, but I don't remember any one contradicting it.

Jesus was a Jew from 2000 years ago in the middle east, how can he look like the holy ghost inspired image? Well, because he is the son of heavenly father, who is perfect. And Jesus, being perfect, has white skin, light hair, and blue eyes.

The problem is, that when you travel down the road showing them the issues with problem, they come up with explanations to each objection. They tend to forget what they said before and will contradict themselves. The smarter they are, the longer they can go without contradicting themselves, but eventually they all do. And when you point out their contradictions, they say things like, "you're taking that out of context," "that's not what it meant," or my favorite, "you'll have to pray to god until you find the answer yourself,"

Sorry for the tangent, but to me it seems relevant to the the talk about Jesus' skin color.
