Title: Imsomniacal mental meanderings

Yeah, me too!

Another night of about one hour's sleep then a brain wandering through all kinds of things. . .

Idea for demonstrating double random selection system - one of two people has to do something (nice or nasty) and you have to choose which. Take up a coin, turn your back on the people, close your eyes and tell them to swap places several times  - one on you right, one on your left but still behind you - until you say "Stop". Then chose left or right to call heads or tails, turn to face them, still with your eyes closed, and spin the coin, letting it fall to the floor. You have a "random" choice of who does the task.

Wish I recorded everything that trundles through the grey matter, I am sure there's good stuff in there!

Any other insomniacal musers out there?

I often can't sleep at night, but I don't muse -- I sew.  All night long.

"I wish I didn't eat terribly and feel like crap for it"

"I just ate a ton of carbs, I should be at the gym right now"

Today I tried to take an extended afternoon nap and the inner "conversation" went as follows:

It's too freakin' hot to sleep. Way too hot. Maybe I should lie on the floor with my limbs outstretched? No.

Maybe I should be doing something more productive? Too hot. Yes but, I'm doing nothing but wasting time here. What does it matter, I waste time like a professional. Yes but, I want to do something more productive. No.

I can't sleep. It's too hot. Maybe I should be doing something else?  No.

I am my own saboteur.

I had to get up an hour earlier this morning, so I tried to go to bed earlier last night. So I ended up staring at the wall or the ceiling until around 1:30am. And I got up at 4:30am. I tried not to think about anything, and when that didn't work, I started to think about my projects to try to get something useful out of my forced awake time. I think it helps to save time when I next get a chance to work on my projects.

I recommend reading the US Tax Code, or some other random statute.  Reading statutes is very boring, and puts you to sleep almost immediately.  Try it - you'll hate it! But you'll fall asleep.

Are there statute audiobooks available? Because I find those do the job nicely.

Being bored annoys me, and it's difficult for me to fall asleep if I'm annoyed. So reading boring things doesn't make me tired, just bored.

The evil sulphurous fart, born through an unholy mating of onion, sprout and the denizens of the lower bowel,  seemed to etch its own path through the duvet, ignoring warp and weft, ignoring the hollow polyester fibres. Then it hung, invisible, but somehow still a toxic yellow-green, above the bed, awaiting another victim.

However the laws of physics were there to set matters aright - Brownian motion and almost undetectable convections ripped the foul miasma slowly apart, diluting it with the, comparatively, pure air of the room until it lost its odiferous identity to the human occupants.

However, a mouse in the attic sniffed in disgust and decided to find a new home.

I couldn't fall asleep until around 2am, and I got up at 5:30am. I really wanted to finish something, but the later it got, the more mistakes I made and the slower progress I made on it. Oh well, I'll try to finish it today.

I used to procrastinate a lot, but then I worked on it for about a decade. I still put some things off, but I do quite a bit each day now. At least for most days.

Yup, many is the time that the quick fix has given me hours of fun and games later!

There again, a quick fix, with a wire coat hanger and a bed spring, on a friend's car lasted for two years, until she sold it!

The procrastination thing is the result of a negative mindset.  On the one hand you do not want to have to wash the damned dishes or complete that written report. So put it off until later....Right?  The other attitude is that the chore has to be done and it is bugging the hell out of me.  SO attack the chore immediately and get it out of the way as fast as you can and then enjoy the peace of mind that is part of not having the chore bug the hell out of you.  It is almost a sure thing that you can sleep better and have a satisfied smile on you face because you have no pesky obligation to do something that you did not want to do..  Think of it as slaying the dragon.

...........The exception is not to harm the  dragon that lives in my garage ....he is my friend and confidante and not to be slain. Actually he urges me to get on with any obligatory project so that we can enjoy our mutual leisure, sip a glass of wine, play some pleasant music, rail against the fundies (and republicans) and feel justifiably superior to the slackers who "puts it off". . It works!

Apres insomnia.

Maybe the poor sleep and nasty dreams last night were due to the cheese I ate. Scientists say there is no evidence to link the two.

Tsk, scientists, what do they know, eh?
Title: Re: Imsomniacal mental meanderings
Post by: Davin on January 17, 2017, 02:07:38 PM
I guess my procrastination is different. I'm used to not wanting to do things, but doing them anyway because I prefer the outcome ot doing them more than I dislike doing them. The reason I tend to procrastinate is that I just find things I want to do more, and if I do it right, I still have time to do the other things I put off. So I keep putting some things off as long as I think I still have enough time to do it. Then eventually, if I don't work on it then, I won't have time to do it. Most of the time I still get them done early, but I have to focus directly on them and nothing else, which is not how I like to do things, but I procrastinated so I no longer have a choice.

So it's not so much that I do not want to do a thing, it's more that as long as I think I have enough time to do it and I have something better to do, then I will put it off for later.

Then there are some things I forget about until they are supposed to be done and I usually remember when I have to rush and crunch to get them done.

I don't think there is anything negative about that mindset.

Yeah...I like the idea of a miracle cure, but I'm not that naïve. I just need to come up with some strategy that involves some external reward as I just can't find the intrinsic motivation to finish things long before their due date.

And stick to it.  ::)

It's 5 am and I'm wide awake. I'm thinking of getting a red light bulb for my lamp and use that after nightfall instead of white light, to see if that lessens insomnia. Apparently there are apps you can download that shift computer screen light to red as well.

Someone who specialises in cronobiology told me that it should work, it's worth a try.

Interesting, pity they don't do an Android version.

Made me think though . . .

I now sleep with a device that monitors my cardiac implant, interrogating it sometime during the night. This has a bright 4mm green LED on the front and a red LED on the cellphone type dongle it uses to upload readings to the server. The device has to be within a few feet and facing me, it uses a low power wireless link, somewhere between Bluetooth and WiFi, to communicate with the implant.

Think that green LED is going to acquire a blob of modelling clay on it tonight. The red LED on the dongle is not so bright. The big blue LED on the WiFi Internet Router might also get blobbed.

The clock-radio already has a liftable red filter over its display, hinged with a bit of duct tape!

There is an Android version (https://justgetflux.com/android/), but it only works on some Android phones. There're also various Blue Light Filter apps (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.ne.hardyinfinity.bluelightfilter.free&hl=en), one of which is probably the one that Firebird mentioned.

Thanks, I was interested for my tablet which is not rooted so far as I know.

Actually the thing I use most late at night is my electronic ink type, reflective, Kindle.

Hmm, I have a programmable colour LED bulb, maybe I will replace the current over bed reading lamp, that has a halogen bulb, with that. Then I can chose the colour and brightness that feels best!  Hmm, need a new reading lamp first . . .

Day One:

I think having the app installed helped a bit, I went to sleep earlier than I usually do and only woke up twice before dawn. On the downside, for it to be effective you probably have to turn off the overhead lights. I don't know about you guys but I like well-lit rooms, especially at night, so as not to strain my eyes.

So yeah, still thinking about getting a red light bulb for my lamp. :notsure: I would probably end up buying a black light bulb though.

I'm still playing around with the settings. One thing I've decided is that the slow transition is preferable to the 20 second option. Also not sure yet about which night lighting is best, but for now I'm using the "halogen" setting.

I've tweaked the settings. I didn't really like halogen so mine is a little whiter (~4250 K). I've changed mine from 20 seconds to slow, and I agree it's better.

I'm enjoying the log.  :)

My approach to this hasn't been very scientific, since I changed a couple of parameters rather than just one. In addition to using the f.lux program, I've made an effort to try to get any computer use that might tend to be stimulating (political discussions, for instance) out of the way well before I expect to retire. So far, so good. I've been an insomniac pretty much all my life though, so I don't really think these changes will eliminate it.

Day Four:

Nothing out of the ordinary happened today. No involuntary floor-hugging, no dreams that I can remember and no need to hunt mosquitoes well into the night with Skeeter Bane, my electric racket. I woke up at 8h, which is the time I usually wake up, and feel way less sleepy than I did yesterday.

I guess it's a good start?

What's your chronotype? Would you consider yourself an afternoon or a morning person?

I became an insomniac when I reached mid adolescence, if it hadn't been for school I would have slept all day and stayed awake all night. Once school was over that's exactly what happened, and it took forever to reverse, but reverse it I did.

I have high hopes, you see. :P

Yes, it worked for a while, even though this was hardly a controlled experiment. :P

I haven't shut it off yet, maybe there's a lingering belief, or hope, somewhere in my mind that even though there are many other variables that could be influencing the outcome, if one of them is changed it might still have some small effect.

It is said that if you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of word processors and an infinite amount of time tapping randomly on the keyboards with their infinite number of fingers they would produce every piece of text in every language that there ever has been, or can ever be, written in the characters on those keyboards. Plus every infinitely possible piece of textual gobbledegook possible in said characters. (Same goes for dialysis or any other machine given infinite resources of the right kind instead of word processors.)

But . . .

Would there be an infinite amount of understanding amongst those monkeys? Would they develop infinite intelligence? Does the very randomness of the process imply that there can be no inherrent design?

Answers on the back of a single postage stamp please.

Title: Re: Imsomniacal mental meanderings
Post by: xSilverPhinx on February 15, 2017, 04:16:17 AM
I don't think they would develop infinite intelligence but in one of infinite universes it is possible that an algorithm for design might spring into existence. Out of randomness something that seems nonrandom might exist.

Since it was a jokey sort of question I was expecting answers more like, "No. No. Yes", much easier to fit on a postage stamp, xSP!

Hmm,

Quote... it is possible that an algorithm for design might spring into existence.

Can't get my head around that. Surely an algorythm needs intent, needs a pre-chosen target? I agree that a sort of perceived non-randomness might occur but, in the conditions specified, that can only be a pseudo-non-randomness.

Oh, hang on, under the conditions specified, "Cogito ergo sum", will actually be typed an infinite number of times.

Ah, but the monkeys will surely have no idea what that means. Unless we allow them to have infinite evolution and develop infinite intelligence . . .

Oh, bugger, what have I started!

:shifty:

I don't think they would develop infinite intelligence but in one of infinite universes it is possible that an algorithm for design might spring into existence. Out of randomness something that seems nonrandom might exist.
Since it was a jokey sort of question I was expecting answers more like, "No. No. Yes", much easier to fit on a postage stamp, xSP!

:P

What if I write it really, really small?

Quote
Quote... it is possible that an algorithm for design might spring into existence.

Can't get my head around that. Surely an algorythm needs intent, needs a pre-chosen target? I agree that a sort of perceived non-randomness might occur but, in the conditions specified, that can only be a pseudo-non-randomness.

Why?

QuoteOh, hang on, under the conditions specified, "Cogito ergo sum", will actually be typed an infinite number of times.

Ah, but the monkeys will surely have no idea what that means. Unless we allow them to have infinite evolution and develop infinite intelligence . . .

Hmm...I think there's a maximum potential a biological brain can achieve, so an organism wouldn't evolve "infinite intelligence" unless it becomes an extended phenotype, that is, monkeys that can build computers that do not have Moore's Law to contend with!

QuoteOh, bugger, what have I started!

:shifty:

:snicker: An interesting conversation! :P

Responding to your original post Gloucester. If we assume they are still monkeys by the end of this, then no. Monkeys will always be monkeys.

If they were given the conditions to evolve they may develop a religion around the text they made.

(This is where I go in depth)

But in statistics and as well as everything else, nothing is 100% (we've explained that to dredge and he doesn't get it). Some events occur a majority of the time. So that would be said to have a high likelyhood of happening, but even still there is the small chance that something else happens. And in a long enough time frame, it does happen (just like if we had enough time countering dredge, we would eventually convince him of something). So if we assumed these monkeys had an infinite amount of time and infinite supportive conditions to write everything, it would happen because even a small chance of something happening can still happen.

Taking that, if they were still monkeys they probably couldn't understand what they are writing, because of the sheer randomness and amount of garbage they are writing that would get mixed in with everything else. Plus they don't have the ability to comprehend in the first place, assuming they are from the wild, so it would be even more improbable that they would understand what they are doing.

However that is some philosophical premise I did not expect to come across- "they can't comprehend in the first place" or do they? Hmm...if you knew if they could comprehend what they are writing, then you wouldn't be asking the question would you? But maybe you would just to humor us? I did not expect to turn this into a philosophical discussion.

I've tried a few white noise generators. None of them seem to be any better than the common box fan but you don't wake up nearly so chilly on cold winter nights.

Funny you should mention that, it's precisely because I'm not turning on the fan anymore that I can't sleep well. It's like I need some sort of constant background noise to fall into a deep sleep.

Something like this:

Didn't sleep the night before and didn't sleep last night either.  I've napped a couple times during the day, but all in all I don't think I've gotten more than 4 hours sleep in the last 48.  It happens sometimes, I'll probably sleep like the dead tonight.

I have made some headway on the latest embroidery project, and I have watched:

The Accountant.  Twice, because I didn't understand it the first time and thought a re-watch would help.  It didn't.  Nice action tho.

Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children.  Samuel L. Jackson was funny.  Otherwise it was good I had some sewing to distract me or I would have changed the channel.

The Big Lebowski.  Yes, this is the first time I've seen this one and now I understand why my brother loves it so much.  Tho personally I don't think a middle-aged stoned slacker deserves to have hair that great.

Genius, the NatGeo miniseries about Einstein.  I binge-watched episodes 1,3,4,5 and 6 OnDemand (no ep. 2 for some reason).  Really enjoying this warts and all look at Einstein's life, and I think I'll enjoy it even more when they get to his old age and Geoffrey Rush takes over the role.

Forged in Fire, a History channel contest show about making bladed weapons.  Who knows what episode I saw, I just picked one OnDemand at random.  I think one of the blacksmiths was an Odin-worshiper, from the way he was dressed.  He didn't win tho, which pleased me because he might have been alt-right.  A lot of them go in for Asatru, I hear.  I'm probably being petty about that.

Huge holes in the plot, but I did enjoy the rescue of the farm couple scene.  Someone described it as "John Vick Hunting", and even tho I've never seen "John Vick" I thought that was a good way of describing "The Accountant".

Anyone watch The Amazing Race? It's a show where contestants race around the world. I think most seasons are available on Youtube.

The more active I am, physically or mentally, during the day the harder I find it to sleep. Just can't turn my brain off, keep thinking up improvements or additions to the day's projects. Ended up ordering bolts and stuff from Amazon, recording voice notes on my phone . . .

That is my normal pattern, even in the winter when the daylight is not there early to stimulate me.

I take aspirin each night as part of my heart meds and, due to foot pain, I have been taking paracetamol at night for the past week or so. That combo is a recognised one and, maybe coincidentally, I have had very good sleep over that period (and had to go to the loo less often at night). Otherwise it was sleep in two hour periods with half an hour between and go to loo two or three times.

I did not take the paracetamol last night.

I am not allowed it but it seems that if you add caffeine (don't know if a cup of coffee or tea is enough) to the above combo it reduces one's sensitivity to light and sound - as well as thoseb ittle pains one becomes orone to as one gets older.

Way back in 2011/2012 I was seeing a girl and when I went home I saw her face on my favorite things. And what I mean by that is, when I thought of my favorite things, her face would appear on top as if an over lay was placed on top of them.

My step brother came to me and told me, as it was happening to me, that he was having the same problem. He may have been seeing another girl though.

Anyone have this happen to them or have any idea what happened? Appreciate it if you respond.

I still don't think it's anything to be concerned about if it's someone you saw on a daily basis.  When I used to work at a supermarket on the checkouts I used to come home and still hear the beeping of the products going through.  The noise was clearly not there anymore but my brain was still registering it, the same thing can happen with visual stimuli.

Replay of last sleepless night, same pattern, watched videos ofpeople doing home workshop projects - then trying to work out how to do something similar in less space. One chap's "workbox",  with all the tools having their place in/on the "lid" and storage inside, had a footprint about the same size as the entire free floor space of my work area!

Think I said before this sort of problem solving is the thing I miss from work, that and having free access to using mills, lathes, saws, welding kit, naterials . . .

Now have a head full of ideas and hoping I have the energy to employ them!

I don't like calling and waking up other people, I'd rather be able to fix it myself but it's in an application that I have almost no knowledge of that has some very complicated business rules. Not sure how I'll be able to sleep after it gets fixed, but for now I'm just sitting here waiting for someone else to fix the problem.

At least I'll be able to leave work a few hours earlier than normal.

Standard QWERTY since that is what most people use in the States. I don't know what the other forms are for, or where they are used.

If there actually a keyboard with DVORAK across the top row? Or is it just named after the composer?

Later: OK, found it, another go at getting rid of the old mechanical typewriter heritage!

There are, but you can also convert a regular keyboard to DVORAK by moving the keys. There is a DVORAK keyboard setting in most OSs.

According to the article, I've been pronouncing it incorrectly. I have always pronounced it like the composer's name. I guess that is programmed into my brain.

I looked on YouTube for a song that could work to teach the QWERTY alphabet and came across VegeTales. Their computer is named QWERTY and they sing something about the bible.

I didn't find a suitable replacement.

A QWERTY alphabet would be interesting as it's the most common (I assume) but then what would it be called? Certainly not alphabet (alpha - a, beta - b). There is no W in the Latin alphabet... :notsure:

These are important questions, I'm sure.

:sadshake: It wouldn't work in Portuguese because there is no W. Calling the new alphabet QWERTY would result in linguistic purists having a fit.

(Not that they can keep the language from "importing" new words.)

Whilst filling out a physio online self referral form I had to record my height and weight, 159cm and 62.5kg. Decided to check on my BMI - 24.7, only just healthy..

Just occurred to me, I suffered vitamin D deficiency as a kid (post war diet syndrome, "ricketts") so I am bandy legged. Straighten my leg bones out and I reckon I would gain a couple of inches. After all a sheet of paper is intrinsicaly the same length whether laid flat or folded.

That would make my BMI 23.4, better!

Helping a friend's dsughter set up progs and accounts on a laptop this afternoon. To test Word I typed in the usual, "The quick brown fox . . ."  then a couple of old armed forces ones, "Of all the fishes in the oggin the mermaid is the best for snoggin" ("oggin" is Royal Navy slang for "sea").and, "Of all the bottles in the bar the full ones are the best by far,"

As a philosophical point it has, once again, struck me that the last one is not right - the best bottles are the empty ones if the chances are that some, at least, of their original contents are in me!

*Stumbling in from the cold*
"Oh hi." Almost like he'd been here the whole time and hadn't vanished for months.
"Hi...?" said everyone else, eying each other, not sure what to say.
"Don't worry, I never really left. Just been lurking in the corner here the whole time."
Very reassuring. Not creepy at all. Awkward pause. "What's with the cast?" someone finally asks.
"Got into a fight with the sidewalk, and the sidewalk won."
"Oh... Sorry?"
"Yeah, well, lots has happened. Haven't had time to stop by. Only finally did now because I couldn't sleep and had time to kill. And really, how many more angry political posts can you write on Facebook before you just bore yourself too? Finally deactivated the fucking thing. Temporarily of course. I'm not crazy!"
Uncertain nods all around.
"Anyway, better try again before my kid wakes up crying in four hours. Keep the faith! Just kidding. Please don't, amirite?? Bye."
"Who was that?" asks a relative newcomer.
The corner starts gathering dust again.

Personally I'm doing great (besides the wrist) and miss you all, but life is alas busy. Firechicklet is going through a sleep regression, (notice it's 6 am now). And being a progressive political junkie in this country has been sucking my soul dry, so I've been going through periods of anxiety and rage, hence logging off Facebook and Twitter for a whole 5 hours now (hopefully a while). So I'm crazed at the moment.
Thank you for letting me scream. Now back to bed hopefully.

Hang in there! :zombie2:

I'm taking a "little break" from this, as well.

Ahhhhh..... :levitate:

...And I'm done with the break....

:devil2:

Our governor just did this to Sessions:  :f you:

QuoteLate Tuesday, California Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, slammed the Trump administration and cast Sessions' legal maneuvering as a political stunt -- going so far as to imitate Trump's style on Twitter.

"At a time of unprecedented political turmoil, Jeff Sessions has come to California to further divide and polarize America," Brown said on Twitter. "Jeff, these political stunts may be the norm in Washington, but they don't work here. SAD!!!"

:snicker:
They're such rebels.

Good to hear from you, again.

About 10 years ago I was an incurable night owl, sleeping all day and staying awake all night. When I started uni again that had to change, but now I feel like my sleeping patterns are slowing edging towards total inversion again, which isn't a good thing. I'm not the carefree and somewhat aimless person I once was, and now that I'm older I feel if I don't get a good night's sleep I'm useless the next day.

I don't know what to do about that.

So I slept all day today and stayed up all night (it's 4:59 in the morning). Not much thinking going on at these hours, just working.
