I've just been to see 'The Danish Girl'. Absolutely incredible film, I haven't cried like that in a cinema before.

My favorite, no surprise I'm sure, is 84 Charing Cross Road.  Also very fond of Paradise Road and Shutter Island (tho it took me awhile to warm up to the latter).

Shutter Island

The film I guessed the story by watching the TV trailer. I dislike films with a twist as I have seen every single one of them coming that I can remember, it's why I dislike everything by Christopher Nolan as you can often see it within the first 20 mins, sometimes sooner. Watch a prolonged dialogue or something out of kilter with everything else and that is going to be the twist. Interstellar pissed me off the most as the second I heard wormhole I knew what the bookshelf bit was going to be about even though it was done differently than what I expected.

My favourite of those kind of films is The Skin I Live In, not going to be to the taste of many as it is quite a disturbing film, it is slow and even though categorised as a thriller is clearly horror, plus it is in Spanish and many don't like to read and watch at the same time. The best thing about it (besides the fantastic direction) is the reveal, there is none. It expects the viewer to have understood what was happening and as the story moves forwards you are more horror stricken at what has been done to the person.

I liked the philosophical question they left at the end: is it better to die as a good man or live as a monster?

One movie I love is Raise the Red Lantern (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101640/). It follows a 19 year old woman who is forced to become the fourth wife of the lord of a powerful family in 1920's China. It too can be a bit difficult to watch.

I watched The Revenant this weekend with my son, and we both enjoyed it immensely...to start off it is visually stunning, with some superb camera work and visuals. My understanding is the entire movie was shot utilizing only natural light, or light that would have been available during the time frame the movie was shot in, such as a fire, kerosene lanterns, torches...I was also pleased to see that they didn't utilize any CGI in the film, which makes it much more realistic.

I also didn't find it too over the top with the action scenes, as similar movies are often times more Rambo than reality.

Reminded me a bit of the movie Jeremiah Johnson with Robert Redford...also interesting how little Leonardo's character actually speaks during the movie due to an early injury to his character.

The storyline follows Crow description earlier in this thread, which some folks might find it a bit gruesome or gory in it's depictions of violence, but it didn't feel like they were using the depictions of physical violence to shock anyone, but rather simply tell the story and describe the hardships faced by the folks at this time.

Music score was quite good as well.

I give it 4 out of 5 digits. ;D

I finally got around to watching the movie "Spotlight (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1895587/)" tonight.

I'll start of by saying this is a extremely well written and scripted movie, with great directing, and some outstanding acting especially from Mark Ruffalo
I can't think of a better one in it's class (Investigative Biological Drama) It has been compared to "All the Presidents Men", or at least its generational equivalent, but I will have to re-watch the latter as it has been many years since I last saw it for me to give a fair comparison.

Different movies I have watched have over the years have brought to me varying emotional states, such as joy, sadness, grief, even feelings of love and lust, but no movie I can recall has ever made me feel as angered as I felt at times watching this film.

If you haven't seen it, you need to watch it.

I really can't wait to see the movie "Miles Ahead", directed and starring Don Cheadle as Miles, also staring Ewan McGregor, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Keith Stanfield.

i have more music by Miles than any other group in my collection, to include CD's and digital recordings. Some years ago I refinished an old china cabinet that belong to my Grandmother as a place to store our CD's. After I was finished with the piece and had placed all the CD's in it I showed Socorro how I had arranged the CD's,  when I was done she pointed at the middle shelf and said what are all those, and I said, "Oh, that shelf is for Miles (Plus some other select jazz).

I've gone through periods were he was all I could listen to, for day's and day's on end. Even now I use some of his music to practice yoga and meditate with.

Anyway here is the trailer, and if anyone has seen the movie I would be interested in hearing your opinion.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2

Definitely a big screen film. Super character interaction. Basic story very well done. Excellent 'feel good' film.

I am groot!!!

Oh and the special effects are so good you just don't notice them, and given the whole film is special effects that very impressive indeed.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

I watched Conspiracy last night. It's about the meeting in Berlin where the nazis decided to eliminate the Jews. Some of the acting was bland while a few characters really shined. Colin Firth was really good. So was the fellow who played the SS chief. Can't remember either the actor or the characters name. Worth an hour and a half.

I tried to watch that back in 2001 but was bored out of my wits. It entirely takes place in a single room, right? Maybe now that I'm older it's worth giving it another shot.

Raise the Red Lantern: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101640/

Set in 1920's China. A young woman becomes the fourth wife of a wealth man. Each night he is home, he shows which wife he will be sleeping with that night by hanging a red lantern in front of her house in the compound. That attention brings with it privilege, power, and status. Eventually, the scheming for that attention gets out of hand.

It is a visually beautiful movie and emotionally compelling. It is also on Roger Ebert's "Great Movies" list.

Most people I know don't know about this film series. Which is saying something considering the internet is here.

It's a great film from the 70s with the 5th and final movie that came out last year.

I have not seen them all. Only the first and third. So I plan to watch them all the way through when I get my computer going.

Recently watched "The Siege of Jadotville". While not a perfectly accurate account of the events in the Congo at the time, it is close enough to appeal to a history buff such as myself.
And quite a good movie in and of itself.

Recently saw 'Alone in Berlin'. Thought-provoking story based loosely on true facts. Very understated acting by Brendan Gleason and Emma Thompson.

Today I saw 'Beguiled' today, starring Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst. Another understated tale of woe but some interesting interactions between the women involved.

I saw the film Valerian. It has really bad reviews and I went in trying to hate it but...I really liked it. The only thing that was obscure to me was the "playlist" of women he had. Like the film takes place in the future so I suppose people are put on "playlists" in the future?

It was a french film that I took for being a scientology propaganda piece but it was actually original and new to me. I really enjoyed the film as it was a nice break from the saturation of American films we have here.

The film's 2 main characters seem to be dynamic in both emotion and logic. In that, they don't just lean to one side. Valerian is a playboy who does his job by the book. His partner/girlfriend Lauraline is a monogamous lover and wild gun as a soldier. Both are steadfast in everything they do and that helps drive the plot forward.

I really enjoyed this film and give it 10/10

The Netflix movie of "Death Note" was superb! It's gotten bad reviews but that is probably because the critics are trying to appease the fans (or not) of the original Death Note anime show. I liked the dark twisted themes and the ending was kind of flat (because I've seen what happens in the original) but it stayed true to the original work and I'm glad of it!

Oh yeah, I just watched that a few days ago. I liked it. There were a lot of things different from the anime (and I never read the manga), but I thought they kept the theme of it while shortening about a quarter or a third of the show into a movie length movie.

Yes I've never read the manga either. I think it was a good thing Mia was killed at the end because she caused a lot of problems in the anime. But the thing is, now more people actually know Kira is Light. Including his father.

The ending was a bit ambiguous but like you said they kept the theme. L is justice, Light is justice. And not knowing what L wrote in the notebook, if he wrote anything at all, signifies the ambiguity of the justice theme.

Here's one special for October -- the Spanish language version of Dracula.  I knew this existed, but I'd never seen it till now.

According to a documentary that went along with it, back in the day movies were often filmed in several different languages simultaneously -- sometimes French or German, but most often Spanish.  They used the same sets, scripts and music but had all different crews and casts.

Critics have long thought the Spanish language version of Dracula a better movie than the English language one, and having now seen it I agree.  The Spanish language Dracula is a much better told story, with more details used from the book and less "fluff" (which is how I think of characters and events that are completely unnecessary and a distraction).

For instance, both Draculas begin in a coach with a young woman reading a travel book about Transylvania out loud.  In the English language Dracula, there's no clue why she's doing this as no one seems to be listening to her and her character vanishes after this scene.  In the Spanish language Dracula, the young woman, and an older woman who is now obviously her companion, have much more screen time and their presence is better explained.  The young woman is reading to the two other English passengers (the older woman and Renfield) who are listening attentively.  The two women are dressed in similar, school uniform looking clothes which strongly suggest they're pupil and teacher, off on a touring holiday.  Plus the young woman's questions to the natives about Transylvanian history provide context in a reasonable way.

When Renfield is traveling on to the Borgo Pass, he sees the Walpurgis fires mentioned in the book.  Not a necessary element, it's true, but it's a very nice touch.

Carlos Villarias, who played Dracula, was better looking than Lugosi and his presentation of a vampire, while still campy by today's standards, was less cartoony and more dramatic.

Renfield, tho I feel traitorous admitting it because I've always loved Dwight Frye's interpretation, had some noticeable improvements as well.  Tho Pablo Rubio didn't use Frye's unnerving laugh (that would have been going too far) he was a more convincing lunatic.  While both men acted crazy, Rubio looked crazy -- as if he hadn't slept in months, literally.

According to the documentary, the Spanish language crew filmed at night after the English language crew had finished for the day, and were able to see what the English speaking crew had done.  They used this to improve their own performances and tweak the script a bit to make it livelier and more coherent.  And it shows.

Maybe this belongs in the unpopular opinion section but how does his private life impact on his acting? Especially already completed productions? I bet there are plenty of actors with secrets they'd rather keep who haven't been found out. Some of these investigations can take years which is punishment in itself and people have to put their lives on hold. Innocent until proven guilty? Bring back House of Cards.

I think...and I'm just speculating here, I don't actually know... that the pubic backlash was probably severe enough to persuade the producers to discontinue the series, maybe not all bad publicity is good publicity.

Spacey, along with all A-list actors, are public figures. Maybe his starpower has dimmed a little after the scandal. Or maybe the producers themselves decided to cut the series due to their moral outrage...which I'd imagine would have to be rather extreme for someone to kill a cash cow like that.

I'm a little pissed off at this whole thing.  >:(

I was quite surprised at this one, Baby Driver. My wife picked it up cheap as it has Kevin Spacey in it. It's essentially an action film set to music. It has a really good music score and some excellent action.

Reading this showed me just how out of the loop I am when it comes to popular culture. I couldn't figure out why a movie starring Kevin Spacey would be cheap.

Because of him they canceled House of Cards!  :rant1:

Maybe this belongs in the unpopular opinion section but how does his private life impact on his acting? Especially already completed productions? I bet there are plenty of actors with secrets they'd rather keep who haven't been found out. Some of these investigations can take years which is punishment in itself and people have to put their lives on hold. Innocent until proven guilty? Bring back House of Cards.

Which HoC? The original for me please.

Watched the Cameron Mackintosh film of Les Miserables again. It was really slated by some critics, particularly for Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe's singing, but that wasn't the point. It did what Victor Hugo intended IMO, namely to highlight social injustice. I thought Crowe expressed the tortured conflict of Javert as well as any other actor who has taken the part. Admittedly the sickly ending when an angelic Fontine  appeared to welcome Jean Valjean into heaven was a bit dreadful, but all in all, it was very very good. An there was a lot of serious eye candy to boot.

What We Do In The Shadows

QuoteThere he is, probably still a bit upset at seeing his best friend disembowelled by werewolves.

There, I found you, that was pretty full on hey, but this is what happens when you're a vampire.
You have to watch everyone die, your mother and father, your friends, sometimes brutal, like slipping and falling on a giant spike, or falling asleep in an autumn pile of leaves and having some of them block your windpipe, or making the simple mistake of making a mask out of crackles and being attacked by ducks, geese, swans. But even dying of old age is brutal, watching your friends grow old, they can't piss, they say stupid things and their brains go and they can't remember anything, and then one day they can't remember who you are and you wish they were dead and then they do die.  No, if I know Stue, this was probably the way he wanted to go, disembowelled by werewolves, blood and guts sprayed onto the trees, his face torn to shreds, ahh, I hope I made you feel better.

A friend insisted I watched the Pixar/Disney animation Inside Out, which coincidentally just came to Netflix. I liked how they handled the idea of emotions (personified in this movie) guiding our behaviour, and memories being transformed from recent to long-term. Some more mature themes thrown in for the adults.

All in all, I give it an 8.5/10.

'The Wife' with Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce. Just didn't do it for me at all. There was just no chemistry between the younger Joan and Joseph. It beggared belief that she would fall for such a pompous, whining, philandering loser. That said, Close and Pryce were brilliant as was Christian Slater. I'd still recommend it and I bet Close is nominated for an Oscar.

I second Bruce's nomination of Bohemian Rhapsody, I thoroughly enjoyed it, great film.

Also I recommend First Man.  I know that the film has been criticised for amongst other things not showing them planting the stars and Stripes on the moon, but I think that misses the point entirely.  The movie is not a "ra-ra" "right stuff" type of thing, it is about Neil Armstrong, the man and I think it strikes the balance just right.  I think it conveys the just how edge of the seat the sixties space programme was and how it affected him.  If you haven't seen it, do so.  Oh and spoiler alert - they get back safely.

I really liked 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. There was even applause from the audience afterward and that rarely happens when I go to the cinema.

I didn't enjoy 'First Man', though, even though I was psyched to see it. I think Ryan Gosling's performance was rather wooden...it's like he got so into character when playing the robot in 'Blade Runner' that he couldn't pull himself out of that role.

Interesting that the first Blade Runner movie was set in a dystopian future -- scratch that, not so much the future anymore, but November of 2019. I remember as a kid watching the movie at home with my parents and wondering if by the end of 2019 we would get our flying cars and replicants. I was, of course, disappointed.

The film stars Dev Patel as Srinivasa Ramanujan, a real-life mathematician who, after growing up poor in Madras, India, earns admittance to Cambridge University during World War I, where he becomes a pioneer in mathematical theories with the guidance of his professor, G. H. Hardy, portrayed by Jeremy Irons.

QuoteA Little Chaos is a 2014 British period drama film directed by Alan Rickman. The story was conceived by Allison Deegan and she co-wrote the screenplay along with Rickman and Jeremy Brock. The film stars Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Alan Rickman, Stanley Tucci, Helen McCrory, Steven Waddington, Jennifer Ehle and Rupert Penry-Jones.

If you like low down sci-fi, find the movie Bird Box on Netflix or wherever.  Sandra Bullock is the principal character.  It is not a blockbuster movie but it is almost interesting. R rated for language, violence, and mild sexual content

The North Koreans or some other malicious entity releases a virus that invades the brain via the eyes. Why disbelief?

I wasn't there or anything, but I assume that the film was created to reflect - with a dramatic margin of error - the reality of life in (and out of) the trenches. If the gore and death is discomforting... well, that's war! How else would you like it portrayed? Surely the point of the film was to capture the reality?! Do you believe life wasn't thus for these soldiers?

I took my 15y/o to see it. We both really enjoyed it.

As for its appropriateness for younger children, I'd have taken my 12y/o to see it if she were allowed by the film classification nannies. My only concern would be that she would be unmoved by the gore and death because of desensitisation. This film might not be shocking - as the reality of war should be - for anyone viewing through a lens of normalised death/gore as portrayed in any number of fantasy action flicks. (Accusations of being the Liberal Airhead parent accepted...).
Title: Re: Good Films.
Post by: Icarus on March 01, 2020, 01:29:00 AM
I have no criticism of the film for its dramatization of that war.  The suspension of disbelief remark was meant to suggest that there were numerous improbable situations in which the main character would sure as hell have failed to survive.

I did not fail to appreciate the tender moments in the film. There were several of them.  Without overtly mentioning the Brit stiff upper lip syndrome it did illustrate that trait.

the most recent version of james fenimore coopers last of the mohicans

he was a quaker, and his writing style was insufferably stuffy, and mark twain complained vigorously about his inaccurate boat-sense.

but this short piece is culturally accurate. the woodland indians of the new york area- seneca, mohawk, oneida, and so on--were reasonably multi-cultural, spoke french or english pretty freely, and customarily stood still for execution in the event they were bested in combat. the scottish reel is more or less period.

what bothers me is that the story takes place in what is now new york state, all igneous and metamorphic country rock--schists and quartzites-- and this entire sequence was filmed in the massive limestones of the carolina appalachians. not that the wrong rocks hurts the story line any, its just that its distracting if you cant help being a rock nerd

they say that roger tory petersen used to lose his eyes during movies with his wife and concentrate on identifying the bird songs in the sound tracks. i can sympathize

I just watched the following little gem on Netflix, and loved it. The movie is called "Sword of Trust", by Lynn Shelton.

The movie plays on the silly conspiracy theory (They're all silly actually) that the South won the Civil War, and there is an actual sword which can prove this deep-state conspiracy theory.

It's a comedy, but also has some poignant moments that I really appreciated. (There is scene were the four adults are traveling in the back of a van, and they open up about their personal lives)

I really recommend this movie, it's basically about a Civil War sword that belonged to one of the characters grandfather, an old man who suffered from Alzheimer's, and who believed the sword, along with some supporting documents prove the civil war was actually won by the South.
So the woman takes it to a pawn shop to try and sell. (She doesn't believe the story, but she hopes the conspiracy theory will raise it value)
The pawn shop owner doesn't buy the story either (He does though authenticate that the sword is a real civil war artifact), but once he realizes there are folks in the south who not only believe the ridiculous claim, but are also willing to pay handsomely for "proof" they set out to meet these ridiculous conspiracy folks to try and sell it.

I really loved the cast, especially the pawn shop owner played by Marc Maron.

Here's the trailer...and if you do watch, please let me know if you liked it or not.  8)

Just looked up Sword of Trust on my Netflix account and it wasn't there :(

Is there perhaps different Netflix content in different countries? If so, you need to implement a VPN.

Perhaps because it's an American/Indie film, the US isn't allowing it to be seen in the UK? Probably they are still mad at England for letting us win the war of Independence, as I think many of us harbor ill-will towards England for not winning.

Imagine how much nicer things would be here in the US if we were still part of the UK?

For one there would be no mass shootings (There was another shooting today in a school in Texas)

Anyway, I hope y'all can catch the movie as it's quite entertaining.

Of the newer stuff, I liked John Wick 4. The whole thing has been a fun series of films, really. Just... Fun. Nothing more.

Of the more well-aged stuff, I thought Spielberg's A.I. was far deeper than people gave it credit for. Kingdom of Heaven was a nice one too, although a lot of people have had their suspension of disbelief broken by certain historical liberties they took...

...You know, I really ought to start a [The Watchful Asmo] thread series for movie reviews. There are plenty of such, about which I do have plenty to say.

If you liked 'A Quiet Place" the "A Quiet Place II" is good too.

i cant think of any good films right away. im not a film wstcher. after about half an hour i have to get up and go do something.

therr was a thriller movie called hannah a few years ago.

the script was flawed, but it had a 3 minute continuous shot done of eric banna with a steady cam that was spectacular. very well done, and clearly carefully crafted by the directpr.

then there was the continuous film 1917. about 5 continuous sequences spliced together. worth seeing just for several of the scenes in it

If continuous shots impress you, I am sure you are aware of Hitchcock's film Rope, which was made to look like the recording of the events in real time, without any edits.

I watched a Netflix movie titled;True Spirit. It is the story of a 16 year old girl who sailed here boat around the world single handed. For me, as an experienced sailor, the movie was definitely a Grabber.

Jessica Watson, the kid sailor, is another of the crazy Aussies who believe that they can do anything dangerous, and they sometimes do. The movie is a well done account of Jessica's real life adventure.
