Wow! I just discovered this section, a treasure chest of information.

Tank you must have spent a lot of time in the process of assembling this. Thanks much. It is appreciated.
Thank you. It did take a while over a period of a few months of gradual addition and it started at the Richard Dawkins Forum (RDF) when I was a member and moderator there. That closed and via a couple of other forums I ended up here, so it tagged along like a little puppy  ;D

Tank, these are brilliant!

First Life with David Attenborough

Episode 1 Arrival
Episode 2 Conquest

QuoteDavid Attenborough's First Life is told with stunning photography, state of the art visual effects and the captivating charm of the world's favourite naturalist. It was first broadcast as a two-part series in the UK on BBC Two in November 2010, and as a two-hour special by Discovery Channel in the US. It is now being shown by broadcasters around the world, including the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Interesting insights into early complex life.

Arizona Museum of Natural History The Arizona Museum of Natural History is the premier natural history museum in Arizona. It is dedicated to inspire wonder, respect and understanding for the natural and cultural history of the Southwest.

Explore Arizona and the Southwest from the creation of the earth 4.5 billion years ago to the present. See the origins of life on earth, meteorites and minerals. In Dinosaur Hall, discover some of the biggest dinosaurs that ever lived, and on Dinosaur Mountain see how some appeared and sounded in a natural context. In a Walk through Time, explore ancient Arizona's Paleozoic Seas, Triassic Petrified Forest, monsters of the Cretaceous Seas, and the first animals to fly.

QuoteAlfred Russell Wallace deduced the application of natural selection to evolution independently of Charles Darwin. While Darwin  deduced natural selection to be the 'engine' of evolution some 18 years before Wallace he did not publish his thoughts. It was only when he received a paper from Wallace in 1858 that Darwin's friends convinced him to publish or see all his own work go to waste.

The text of the joint paper, presented without Wallace's knowledge, can be read here The 1858 Darwin-Wallace paper.

Wallace was quite a character, and early proof that you can fervently believe in evolution and God simultaneously!

I don't think he believed in the Christian God though, he described himself as a spiritualist and not Christian.   He was however a good socialist ;)

QuoteThe human eye, Darwin argued, could have evolved from a simple light-catching patch of tissue of the kind that animals such as flatworms grow today. Natural selection could have turned the patch into a cup that could detect the direction of the light. Then, some added feature would work with the cup to further improve vision, better adapting an organism to its surroundings, and so this intermediate precursor of an eye would be passed down to future generations. And, step-by-step, natural selection could drive this transformation to increased complexity because each intermediate form would provide an advantage over what came before.

Darwin's musings on the origin of complexity have found support in modern biology. Today biologists can probe the eye and other organs in detail at the molecular level, where they find immensely complex proteins joining together to make structures that bear a striking resemblance to portals, conveyor belts and motors. Such intricate systems of proteins can evolve from simpler ones, with natural selection favoring the intermediates along the way.

But recently some scientists and philosophers have suggested that complexity can arise through other routes. Some argue that life has a built-in tendency to become more complex over time. Others maintain that as random mutations arise, complexity emerges as a side effect, even without natural selection to help it along. Complexity, they say, is not purely the result of millions of years of fine-tuning through natural selection—the process that Richard Dawkins famously dubbed "the blind watchmaker." To some extent, it just happens.

A good illustration of a commonly misunderstood concept.
It appears to me (whether rightly or wrongly) that direct arguments against Christianity and theism produce hardly any effect on the public; and freedom of thought is best promoted by the gradual illumination of men's minds which follows from the advance of science - Charles Darwin

I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the object of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own -- a god, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotism. - Albert Einstein

Religion is a by product of fear. For much of human history, it may have been a necessary evil, but why was it more evil than necessary? Isn't killing people in the name of God a pretty good definition of insanity. - Arther C. Clarke

Faith means not wanting to know what is true. - Friedrich Nietzsche
