Title: Tech help
Post by: Dave on January 27, 2017, 10:33:19 PM
There often something goes awry that another, expert or otherwise, has met or knows about.

So, here it is, somewhere to ask those questions about all things technological or operative.

Or maybe post a fix for something you have cured yourself.

I finally got back to the task of removing the "This site may be hacked" warning from Google search results for the www.happyatheistforum.com/ page. The forum itself does not have a warning and is just fine, and in fact the actual page above is perfectly safe as well. Members of this site as well as visitors can continue to come here safely.

However, there is something going on (apparently there is a bot creating pages using the site name), and we'll see how long it takes to fix it.

The Grey Eminence Himself has got involved with this, and so at some point there is likely to be some downtime(s) for the forum as he expells the parasite(s). There will be a warning when that is in the works. Praise be to Asmo!

Well, looks like some photo sharing sites have a block on me! :(

Have been using the Photobucket Android app for a long time now. Fairly intuitive and it gave a link that showed the picture in the post. Then it all changed . . .
Suddenly my user name and password, saved in my Google account, are not recognised. Manual start up fsiled. Attempt to open a new account failed, even using different email, user name and password, "Sign in failed".

Got close once but, though there was no Captcha code offered, just an "I am not a robot" tick box, I still got it wrong somehow!

Tried Tinypic, despite it being crap, keep getting "Wrong code" message to every attempt.

Anyone else load up from Androud? If so which app do you use?

Oh, I tried Imgur, found it as intuitive as quantum mechanics! Might try that again though, getting desperate!

One for the forum techies - I seem to remember a page where we could set various things, like I set "Youtube" to only display the link only, not the start screen. Could this have any bearing and where is that page anyway?

I use imgur and Google Photos. Imgur for when I want a file link and Google Photos for when I take my own photos.

Well, all I get is the link and not an actual picture!

When I hit "Share" on Photobucket I was firdt offered various locations, as in Imgur, and hitting "clipboard" then gave me various link formats to copy/paste. Now I just seem to get the link type above.

Adding "img" tags just gives me a picture place holder on my screen.

Hmm,  IIRC the original Photobucket link ended with a .jpg label.

Arturo, can you post a link from Imgur but edit it with asterixs for the brackets please, so that I can see the format.

Yup, Photobucket seem to wiped out my account, no longer works on any device I have. Must recognise the router.

And no versions that I download seem to offer link formats for forums.

Yeah I can do that but it would be easier if I told you how to get the link.

What you do is go to your picture
Long press your finger over it until a menu pops up
Press open in new tab
Copy the web address
Now you have a usable link *https://i.imgur.com/hzBiTPV_d.webp?maxwidth=640&shape=thumb&fidelity=high*

OK, but that is not exactly intuitive to me! Too used yo just tapping a picture, a box with a tick appears and I upload. Similar pricess selects the pic to share.

Not vastly different but a short tap rather than a "touch and wait" :)

Took me a while to learn how to upload.

Enough to fool this bear with a simple brain.

Taken Imgur out now, can't remember what name and p-word I used . . .  Photobucket seemed so simple and relatively intuitive, there were always clues on the screen on how to do the next step. I do love intuitive designs for this sort of stuff, lead me by the hand and spoon feed me in this sort of thing. But so many designers want to show how clever they (think they) are.

I like the "work the logic out for yourself" in puzzle games etc, not in tools, the simplest, most efficient tool is the best one.

I'm not really a fan of imgur on mobile devices, there is too many steps. However I do like the computer version.

Is there someone here who can make a picture bigger? I want some art for my YouTube channel and I already have the picture I want, it's just too small. I need it to be 2048 x 1152 please. Also, if you can some how give it a plane white background I'd love you forever.

This is the picture. Rather large for a forum but not for YouTube I guess.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Another thing, I want to move all my videos from their current channel to my original one. Is there anyway I can download them to my tablet?

What is the font that is used? Without that, it's still possible, but it will be more difficult.

I don't know about downloading videos on a tablet, but I've done it on my PC.

I've got the videos and reuploaded them to my new channel.

Not sure of the font used, will have to get back to you on that. But anything that looks close will be fine.

Edit: Font is Cloister Black

So here are the steps:

1. Download the font (I assume you already have it though)
2. Download and install GIMP
3. Open GIMP
4. Create new image: File->New then make the dimensions 2048x1152
5. Add in alpha channel: Layer->Transparency->Add Alpha Channel
6. Delete the background: [Ctrl]+[A], [Delete]
7. Select the font tool and then select the font (Cloister Black)
8. Click inside the image then type out what you want (Arturo)
9. Resize the font and move it about until you get it the way you want it
10. Save the image: File->Export As

There's a woman who works here in our office who's semi-retired. Comes in about once a week.

She alway's has computer problems which either my boss or I help her with when she's here.

When she was still full time it got to where I was almost spending as much time in her office as mine, especially when we moved her from a Windows PC to a Mac. (Oh Vey :-X) This was after we did away with our IT Department.

Besides her lack of computer skills the one thing that is difficult to deal with is the condition she keeps her computer in. I mean it's so totally disgusting, keyboard and touch pad on her laptop are practically encrusted and the screen looks like it was peppered with the spray from a million fucking sneezes.

Anyway, my boss was just in her office helping her get reconnected to our server, and as she walk past my office door she was holding her hands out in front of her as she headed to the restroom to wash her hands, she glanced in my office and made a face like she had just cleaned up after someone with the plague.

I've mentioned the lack of hygiene to her before, and have even wiped of the keyboard and touchpad on occasion, but now that we only see her once a week it's seems to have gotten much worse.

I'm thinking of asking my boss, to say something to her boss about having her keep it clean, I mean it is company property after-all and the fact that others have to touch the fucking thing.

Anyone else deal with this before? (My wife's iPad screen is fairly nasty, when she ask's me to look at it I sometimes make a face, but at home I just end of cleaning it for her cuz' that's what dudes do!)

Today when I accessed the HAF forum, the first thing I got was a full screen popup that is a survey or opinion poll about HAF. It offered me a chance to win $50.  I closed that screen and later shut off the computer. Now that I have later restarted the computer, dialed HAF, the same polling screen popped up.

Q: is that something the HAF is doing or is it some kind of scam that preys on poor old slobs like me?  I suspect the latter.

Scam. Nothing to do with HAF. If HAF organised something like this we'd tell people it is happening before we did it.

Tech guys...Help!!!
At some time in the past my windows 8 system was seized by the evil Microsoft villains. They installed Widows 10 on my PC without my permission, blessing, or method of stopping the uninvited invasion.

In fact I got along well enough with 10. It has some features that are useful or at least useful if I knew how to use them.  Never mind that part. ....It comes to pass that a standard Win 8 built in  program could and did transfer photos from the cameras HDSC card to the PC. That facility has been corrupted by the change from 8 to 10. An unintended flaw in the 10 system. When I explore that malady I find that it is a common flaw.

I have looked all over the place to find a program (app) that I could install to fix the transfer problem. All the apps that I find, promise to transfer I-phone photos to the PC but not from the camera or the card to the PC. I used to use Picasa but that is now considered obsolete and no longer supported by Google or whoever the proprietor is/was.

Is there any hope for my poor ignorant self?  Must I buy a new PC, abandon my former ability to transfer photos and subsequently post them, or take to heavier drinking?
Title: Re: Tech help

This is a weird one, Icarus, but the sort of thing that increases my hatred of Microshit.

I seem to remember that my new laptop would not recognise SD cards for a while but cannot remember the fix unfortunately.

However, related to this. Later I found it was not recognising a new archive drive either. In fact it would not recognise the old drive that had worked perfectly with the old W10 laptop. After a bit if investigation I found that my Avira security software was blocking them. It was generating a dialogue box - but it was hidden behind any open windows, including "File manager"! Once I found that I ticked the "always connect" type box and it worked OK thereafter.

Check in you security level settings to see if W10 has set them at max as a default. Check for "hidden" dialogue boxes from your security software as well if you can.

I am suspicious of the anti virus app that I am using. AVAST has been particularly picky about what it would allow to enter the PC. I will work on the process of persuading Avast to allow photo loading.

When I try to modify text on my tsbket it does not work, that below has been font changed, size changed, coliur changed, centred snd emboldened - I have to put the mods in first then type in the middle of the nest or I lose the highlighting everyvtime I try to change after typing:

As below but with all brackets complete:
[font=comic sans ms [size=36pt [color=red [center [b EXAMPLE /b] /center] /color] /size] /font]

Think I have sussed it, the more "basic" the modification the closer to the text it has to be:

Seems to be having lots of probs with the connection to HAF lately. Often takes ages to get to a thread or upload a reply. Little progress bar stops about 1/10th the way across for up to three minutes and now getting "lost connection to mySQL" error messsge. Tine of dsy does not serm to be a factor.

Any ideas?

First you have not been banned, obviously. What has happened is that you access the internet via your ISP via a dynamic IP address. Your dynamic IP address has changed. The one it has changed to is associated with a ban. I need you to tell me the IP you using on your Windows 7 Desktop so I can find the ban associated with it is and modify that. Once that is done you'll need to clear your browsers ccashe.

One can find the IP you are using accessing this site here http://iplocation.truevue.org/

It echoes back the IP you access the site from. If I'm right it should give a different IP from your desktop and tablet.

Thanks. I will get back to you.  I think what screwed it up was my setting up ExpressVPN last night. So I think it's going to assign a new IP address every time. I am just doing a few things and will send my address without the VPN activated a bit later.

OK,  I've stopped the VPN and I'm back on my "normal " IP, which is currently 155.93.151.13. Still "banned"!

If you VPN is going to assign a new IP each time we may have minor recurring issue. But we'll see.

No, I will work around it by simply switching off the VPN. I don't need it all the time. The IP is always 155.93.151.13 without the VPN.

Though I think that was possibly malware that time.

That's an excellent suggestion.  I am doing something else now but will try later and report back. Perhaps the VPN has left something that needs clearing.

Ah fk, there's dear old Dave just up there.  :)

Processors, CPUs
Circa 2000-2010 AMD was your best value buy
And then they lost, fell away, Intel had won.
AMD is back now apparently.
Should I trust them?
Do they still run too hot?

I'm thinking about buying a NAS that is suitable for a small IT business. It should have at least 4 drive bays, a fast processor, minimum 4 GB memory, good software support and easy to setup/configure.

Both the Synology DS920+ and the QNAP T-253D models seem to fit my needs quite well, but I'd love to know if someone has good or bad experiences with these two brand/models or can recommend an alternative NAS.

I have been thinking along those lines as well — in my case for home use. The Synology products have a good reputation and support, at least where I am.

Thanks, Hermes!
My NAS will be initially for home use as well. My wife and I do have some plans to start a small business together in the near future, focussed on crafting, photography and IT.

I tend to go for the QNAP, because it is has the better hardware and a beter price value relationship than the Synology.
Synology however seems to be a little bit better on the software side.

I've had a fair amount of experience with QNAP devices with a number of clients and in our own office.  They are reliable and work well.  You also have the option of running them using iSCSI for a SAN - I've run one a a site with iSCSI on one interface and standard SMB NAS on the other, splitting the storage between the SAN and NAS.

Was it easy to set them up? I heard some people say on YouTube and Amazon that the QNAP software isn't so intuitive and even unstable.

Earlier versions were a bit clunky with the LDAP integration, but I never had any problem setting up the iSCSI interface.  If you're not going to use it as a SAN (and now there are actual fibre channel SAN expansion cards available for the latest QNAPS) then iSCSI is irrelevant and they are pretty easy to set up and configure.  But maybe I'm just familiar with them.

Thanks Bluenose! I'm not going to set the NAS up as a SAN, so I should be OK. The NAS will be used for backup and as a media server; later I'll probably use it for virtual machines and Docker as well.

BTW for anyone interested in NAS technology. On YouTube I found a very nice British channel, called NASCompares (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFyP17HoU-vpxhIpGXnXx2g) that offers loads of very good information about NAS hardware and software.

Summoning the tech wizards for help!  :P

I'm helping a professor with a Facebook page for this year's Brain Awareness Week. She added me as an editor so I could help her post content, links and updates.

This evening I got a message from her saying she accidentality deleted an entire Album. Hmm. Ok. I myself am rather clueless as to how to retrieve deleted content from a FB page, which apparently is different from a restoring deleted photos from a personal account.

I looked it up online, read about 7 tutorials, but none of them are really helpful or are outdated. So, I thought about opening a cached version of the FB page in question to retrieve the deleted photos, but when I try it asks me to log into my account and when I do, I leave the cached page.

What do I do?  :-\

I don't know anything about Facebook but here's an idea. Go through the motions including leaving the cached page. Now try seeing if you can get to it.

Somehow the gods of Facebook smiled upon me and I was able to retrieve the content.

I don't know if this belongs here however, in my Recent Unread Topics I've got four pages of really old posts. Does any one have an idea as to why?

Edit: Never mind. I must have pressed something else because it's working correctly.

Since I was banned and then forgiven, I cannot play any of the video posts.  If I press the button for play, a black screen jumps up and tells me that an error occurred.  I tested my internet speed and it tells me that it is fast enough at 15.2 mb.

What else should I do?  Oh yeah, I can play any You tube video with no problem at all.

Thank you for pointing that out Icarus. Checking, I get the same problem. Seems likely we will have to find a workaround.

How to post a scanned document on the forum ?. The document is in my files. Will I need to transfer the scanned item to Imgur or some other place before I can post it? A hopscotch routine?

Yes. That's exactly what you need to do

Tank you Tank.   Yes I know that basic information is posted elsewhere. But we have had several revisions to the forum mechanism since that instruction.  Just checking.....

Icarus, to add a little to what Tank has said: a scanned document is just an image like a photo. If you want to edit the text by changing words or adding extra paragraphs, you can use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to convert the image into real text that can be edited in a word processor. That is even more of a hopscotch routine, but I've been forced to use it on occasion.

How do you work a toaster? I mean, how do you get that right kind of brown? Not black like my hole or light like my skin.

For a start, never refer to the device you are sharing your life with as "My phone"

...Ok, maybe just a little like that.
